SKY should launch a dedicated gay channel. Would you all be screaming and shouting if that remained an exclusive on the SKY platform? ;)

Sky Living has had wide appeal for ages, all they're doing is admitting that this is the case and re branding in line with what they actually are, as opposed to what the perception of them is. The pink logo set against, say, Hannibal or Dracula, is about as jarring as the Joop Homme adverts you get before really gritty drama on Fox.

Agreed. I think Antonia Hurford-Jones has lost the plot if she really needed to be told this:

happy bank holiday weekend all...

aye i'll quite happily take sky atlantic and fox news and be quite happy with the above list. Sky atlantic as it seems to be the only big thing missing and fox news for the sheer "lolz" of that channel.

Den- do you mean pay Netflix for free or purely the app? I have a playstation set up on my tv so I could get it through there so it wouldn't be a huge must for me unless it was properly built into TiVo like on demand etc is?

The US Tivo, that the VM Tivo is based on already has a Netflix app so it should be easy to add one to the VM Tivo.

Why would virgin add Netflix unless they was thinking of reducing their own on demand content? Plus US Netflix has all the latest releases, sometimes before they hit the cinemas here, a uk company would never be allowed to host the US version.

If they do add it (and it has been mentioned several times as a possibility by VM management) they would add the UK Netflix.

Which is why it is not a big deal to me as you wouldn't be able to use Unblockus on the Tivo Netflix app.

But any added value OTT service added to Tivo is a plus in my view, so I hope they add it.

There have been rumours that it could be included in the price; but they are just rumours (one source being a market survey). That would be a first for Netflix to do such a deal, so seems unlikely; but so did free BT sport, so you never know. It would add to Tivo, free or not.

But only stereo sound; not 5.1 audio.

I think the Netflix catalogue has grown quite a bit since they first launched. I had Lovefilm a few months back and found more I was interested in on Netflix UK than I did on Lovefilm. But why not add them both?

Chad 25-08-2013 15:55

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 4.

My Smart TV has Lovefilm, Netflix and Blinkbox. It would be great for Virgin to add such services to TiVo however you've got to ask, what is in it for Virgin and would it be worth their while? Virgin already have their own movie on demand service. Adding something like Lovefilm or Netflix to TiVo would just be extra competition for their own service.

It was reported last week that in Netflix have 1.5 million customers in the UK and Ireland:

http://www.worldtvpc.com/blog/netfli...e-of-lovefilm/

So of a reach of 67.5 million people, 1.5 million have signed up for Netflix which is roughly 2.2% of the population. 1.8 million people have TiVo. If the take up rate of 2.2% carried over to TiVo customers, that equates to 39,600 customers taking the service.

I accept there is flaws looking at the figures in this way however it helps build a picture why Netflix and Lovefilm might not be worth Virgins time.

To be fair the service has only been launched just over 18 months so I'd say those figures are pretty good.

I agree however are the figures big enough to justify Virgin adding the service?

Not sure how it would work but seeing Virgins platform is closed, would Virgin have to pay Netflix to add them to the TiVo platform?

Not really VM's movie service is mainly for newer films. Most of the ones on Netflix are older ones, though they do have some recent ones. Also most of the Netflix viewing is TV shows and VM don't sell those via On demand.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 4.

A good idea for Virgin would be to offer something like Virgin movies for a small fee each month say £5p/m ok we wont get latest blockbusters but it'd be nice to have that option and would probably be much better than Picturebox.
As for Netflix it is leaps and bounds ahead of Lovefilm if you use a VPN ;) but if using uk only services then agreed Lovefilm is better.

Netflix wouldn't challenge Virgin Movies as VM Movies is a PPV service.

As theone2K10 pointed out, a rival service of Virgin Movies at a subscription would be hard, the rights are snapped up as exclusives in this market between Netflix/LoveFilm/Sky Movies, the easiest and cheapest way to do this would be to team up with one of these guys!

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 4.

Virgin Movies would get the movies 12 months before Netflix/Lovefilm, so I'm not sure that the latter 2 would be a threat.

And as a heavy user of Netflix/Lovefilm, I would add both, but given VM's habit of taking forever to do stuff (Almost 3 years for Android TVA App; more channels for MRS; upgrading to TiVo software released stateside in October), I'm not holding my breath.

People forget that Sky uses an open satalite astra that other companies use in europe.
Apart from its own channels, the rest are only there because other television companies use the same satalite so little negotiating requried only payment for the channel number is required for most of those channels. so it requires alot more neogiating onto a closed system that an open system.

I have seen on the Virgin Media web site that RTE Radio is now broadcasting on Virgin Channel 917 in all areas!

But as far as I know RTE Radio is only broadcasting in old Telewest areas.

So can anyone who was in an NTL area confirm if RTE Radio has launch in your area on Virgin Channel 917*.

*If you have both RTE Radio (Channel 917) and WRN Radio (Channel 920) that mean you are in an old Telewest area.

Virgin already do this, by carrying Sky Movies.

The question is what would Netflix and Lovefilm offer that is different to this. Or is this another case (like sports) where competition works against the consumer by making you subscribe to several different services to get a full choice?

Price would be a key factor. Sky Movies collection would cost me £19.50/month or £26.50/month with HD. Netflix/Lovefilm are around £5.99/month so guess would be the VM price as well. Sky may have the most film content but not necessarily all exclusive content and with that price different there is certainly a market for VM to offer a lower cost movies option, while VMs current movie option still provides the Pay As You Go approach which is what I actually prefer myself as don't watch many films since always have loads of series to watch and I have a life to live outside watching TV! Its all about flexibility and conveneince from one box/service.

The Netflix offering is very different to what is offered on Sky movies. Price for a starters; only six quid a month as against £26 per month for Sky movies in HD and 5.1 audio. (much of Netflix is HD with a lot with 5.1 audio).

Sky movies does not have TV series; Netflix have loads. Most of the films on Netflix are older (hence the cheaper price) but they do have some recent films, e.g. The Hobbit and The Hunger Games.

Netflix would be a completely different additional offering to what is currently available on VM, and would be a convenient way for people who don't want an extra box to access it.

Maybe Netflix would be a suitable replacement for the woeful PictureBox, which must have very low subscription numbers these days

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 4.

would providing Netflix/Lovefilms hamper our relationship (call it what you will) with Sky whom we rely on to supply other chanenels.

PictureBox was never a threat but supplying Netflix/Lovefilm option VM would be suggesting an alternative to Sky for which we have a wholsesale agreement.

Is there an OFCOM ruling saying they HAVE to supply Sky movies, I think there is one to cover reasonable costs but I refer to the original point is that by pursuing this are we danger of not obtaining the final installment of the holy grail of HD/SD channels remaining not in the VM portfolio

Just think we could follow the AVP motto is that "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" and with SKY Vs BT we could try and use it to our advantageto procure the other channels

are we jumping the gun starting in September when we still have 3 months to go and if rumours are to believe we are expecting more soon in September

mind you even just looking at the first 9 months any of the candidates would still beats Channel 5+1 as best new channel of 2012 award

Personally l think the market is changing and thus Sky and Virgin are entering into a period of entente cordiale which will suit both parties as BT are seen very much by Sky as the enemy now and thus doing deals with Virgin is very much to their benefit from a financial point of view but also they benefit from a strong Virgin curtailing some of the threat of BT by having their content on Virgin but with-holding from BT as much as l can thus in the process weakening BT's hand.

i'd agree den they must surely now know that people who are on virgin now arent going to switch now. we lost sky basics we stayed. we dont have sky atlantic we stayed. we had hardly any HD channels we stayed. etc

sky's biggest attraction i think is sport coverage if they lost the main rights to that then they'd lose customers. BT are the threat. They must ensure BT doesnt succeed between now and the next football deals.

the best way to do it would be make virgin seem more attractive so people who won't go to sky and have never contemplated it wont go to BT instead

More money from Virgin and a more attractive proposition to advertisers. The strength of the Sky brand will, I'm sure, negate the specific requirement for a USP, but pricing is probably where Sky can win out. Sky Sports, for example, is already significantly cheaper on the Sky platform than the Virgin platform.

Exclusive channels aren't just about attracting new customers there about retaining existing ones , I'm not suggesting new channels won't arrive I am however interested to see which ones because many Sky users seem to suggest they stay for Sky Atlantic and HD Sky Sports channels.

Sky subscriptions dwarf the amount it makes through wholesale and advertising so whilst I think some of the missing channels will arrive I'm dubious about some that have been suggested specifically the HD sports ones however like the rest on here its all guesswork.

Won't sky just launch sky atlantic on virgin and then launch sky bravo as an exclusive channel. Sky atlantic is an old channel now. Sky adverts bragging about sky atlantic and all the shows on there probably don't have as much impact as they used to. Again my point before if people didnt want to leave their current provider for sky due to sky atlantic when it launched they won't do it 2 years later.

But the sky thinking will be....LAUNCHING SKY BRAVO AND ALL THESE EXCLUSIVE SHOWS ONLY ON SKY...

they can then do a new advert trying to tempt people over.

i'd guess we'll get sky atlantic within a year and i'd guess sky bravo will launch exclusively on sky within a year.

Don't forget thou matey sky bravo as been delayed due to the fact they can't agree on a carriage agreement with vm.this suggests to me that new carriage agreements are being made between vm and sky and this is why we will see some of the missing if not all channels ;)

I have mates who will never go to vm as well as mates who will never go to sky,the deal I am on with vm I'm certainly not going to move and to be honest with the deal I have off vm in 12 month I could still keep sky on and still pay less .you have a great deal with sky so you ain't gonna move either bud,I really don't think know it would make much difference to both companies to have same channels but i think it would harm bt;)

Yep, that's what the Guardian reported.

TBH, I can't see the sort of stuff they seem to be planning for Bravo having an 'exclusive' pull. Atlantic OTOH has, because of it's US cable network content which is premium content in the US.
