I thought that the BBC had to get the permission of the BBC Trust to launch new channels ie on the EPG's and that the workaround was to put the streams behind an actual red button!

Premier Sports
confirmation about BT Sport

Premier Sports decided not to join the VM platform because they were only offered carriage on a standalone basis, when in fact, they wanted to be part of the XL package in the same way as ESPN.

As people will no doubt have to pay extra for BT Sport, using the "ESPN money" to fund adding Premier Sports to XL seems a fair solution to me.

Channel 991 is showing the the live webcam for Springwatch. See if you can spot any Jackdaws and Grey Wagtails, along with other British creatures in their natural habitat.

I'm currently relaxing to this in the background, it's almost as good as when Birdsong is on digital radio.

A) An Extra Red Button steam will be added to Channel 992 soon.

I did wonder why only 2 EPG slots were allocated when 3 are allocated on freeview.

B) As the HD Red Button Channel is just for this summer maybe BBC HD will relaunch later this year
Unlikely to see the return of BBC HD, but there could be new services when the new DVB-T2 temporary multiplexes are added on DTT.

Why did Virgin put BBC Red Button on Channels 991 to 994 for when Channels 183 to 186 is free?
I would have thought for the same reason freeview put them in the 300 range, they are interactive streams and not channels in their own right.

I would be very surprised if Universal HD does not arrive soon. Major companies like Universal simply do not allow sloppy errors like sending out the wrong adverts to the wrong companies. Also, VM must check all adverts just incase there is anything that could involve them being sued/fined for any number of reasons. Universal HD will be coming, it's just a question of when.:)

It's a stream not a channel so won't launch as such, it will just show content as and when required.

I know mate, but how will you watch the content then?

I guess by going to the channel number required for it. I doubt it will be shown on the BBC Sport app.

Jameseh 06-06-2013 19:05

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 2.

Both, a regular channel feed via the EPG and a internet stream via the connected red button & BBC Sport app.

That allows VHD & V+HD customers to watch in HD which they wouldn't have been able to otherwise, which as they can on Freeview, would be breaking the neutrality. Someone found some feeds on satellite last week so presumably that's the same thing confirmed for Sky & Freesat.

Cheers mate. I personally prefer the channel format instead, as it allows you to record the content if you are busy.

That's how it works on freeview, they are available from other BBC channels through the red button or by simply going to the channel number. Allocating a channel number rather than hiding the streams from the EPG just means that they are recordable. I can't really see any other reason for it.

I know how it works on Freeview, but I didn't think it would be the same on VM. It wasn't like that in the past.

It doesn't have to be like that on freeview, the streams could be hidden and only accessible from the MHEG, there's no real need for an LCN to be allocated. The pay adult channels on DTT use that method to hide the streams.

Perhaps someone at the BBC decided it would be better to have a similar approach across every platform. Or VM switched to make the streams recordable. Either way, VM doesn't yet have a slot for the freeview RB 302 stream.

Well probably one of the streams will be delivered over the Internet connection for Tivo users, otherwise it makes the connected red button kind of pointless

I would have thought that all of the broadcast steams would be duplicated with possible extra streams available for the connected red button. Yes, it does make it kind of pointless but the connected red button is at a very early stage of development, not really a mass market option at present.

It's very vague and only really states that the BBC are looking at making BBC Four documentaries available in HD. Which could mean showing them on BBC Two, or could mean they will be shown on one of the new BBC HD channels planned for the additional freeview DVB-T2 multiplexes.

Also only one of the price changes gives Virgin extra to get more content - the other goes straight to Sky

Also only one of the price changes gives Virgin extra to get more content - the other goes straight to Sky

Then lets hope Sky give us the missing channels that we have long been waiting for.:)

Well, the presence of a new COO with a strong track record of company growth AND obtaining otherwise exclusive Sky channels can surely only be a positive thing.

Liberty Global news

You may have heard that we’ve just officially merged with Liberty Global, a leading international cable company.
This is an exciting new development for Virgin Media as it means we’re now part of the world’s largest broadband communications group. Between us we have 25 million customers, in 14 different countries, as well as a shared goal to provide our customers with the very best experience possible.
We believe this is great news for all of our customers as we’ll be able to provide even more compelling, great value products whilst continuing to ensure they get the brilliant service we know you’ve come to expect from Virgin Media.
And just to let you know - we’ll still be called Virgin Media and you’ll still be part of the Virgin family we’ve created over the last six years. But now we’ll be doing this as part of a much bigger group.

Like what m8, if anything is any good or if any channel has any British ambitions they usually end up on sky very quickly.

I think the takeover is a bad thing. I think VM will now have more price rises and not much extra content. Normally takeovers are always bad for the customer

With todays take over finalised, does anyone know if LG has a unified offering in all the countries it operates? Buy channels in bulk? Or does each brand keep to its own region channels? Say, would VM and Irelands UPC offer the same channels?
