No update yet in Notts. I will be interested to see if there are any improvements, I hate the speed issues, especially starting Netflix, it run's great when it's going, but it is so slow to start, painful.

Hmm. Try this...
Put your thumb over the IR receiver on the front of the TiVo (it's just to the left of the standby LED), then use the front panel buttons to operate the TiVo. Does it now go faster?

Rebooting seems to speed up Tivo temporarily. The longer it's switched on the slower it gets. Maybe the update has the same effect as a reboot before it gradually reverts to the usual snail pace. My v hd box is so much quicker and the PQ is better too.

Not so clever at recording though, is it.

Can't really see it tbh Stephen, I was expecting something a lot better, but imo the only real difference is the colour scheme......:td:

I was under the impression the "falsh clash" bug within series links had been resolved in this update, it certainly still seems present here.

I haven't seen anything to suggest it is fixed. Got a link?

Not that I've ever seen it myself. Do you have a reproducible case?

I concur , i don't really see any difference other than the colour scheme changing.

Does the % of hard drive use have any bearing on how sluggish Tivo appears?

Apologies, no I don't have a link - I seem to recall seeing it discussed somewhere, but can't recall where. Sorry again for confusing!

I've got one currently, "Secrets of the Wild" on NatGeo Wild. One recording rescheduled but showing as a clash. Certainly not a major issue in the grand scheme of things.

Probably a bit, but I'd think fragmentation is a bigger factor. If a TiVo is really slow it's usually caused by IR interference (hence my questions to Max).

I wasn't complaining, just stating it as a matter of fact! The ex-Telewest Knowsley headend has always received the big TiVo updates in the last or maybe second to last of the areas that are updated. I posted it on here to see if anyone else could confirm that.

I'm getting used to the new colour scheme now, I love the font, nice and modern. I do think theres too much white on screen, especially in My Shows with the left column and the folder icons in white too.

I'm surprised that the screen goes black and sound drops when you go to Home, My Shows or TV Guide still, would of thought that would of been fixed by now?

I can refute it. I have the last four rollout plans here

Rollout 5th to 15th Nov 2013 - you got it on 14th Nov (second-last)
Rollout 23rd Oct to 1st Nov 2012 - you got it on 25th Oct (third)
Rollout 14th to 26th Aug 2012 - you got it on 16th Aug (third)
Rollout 9th to 24th Nov 2011 - you got it on 22nd Nov (third-last)

So in that time you've never been last, and only second-last once.

The fact of the matter is no-one knows when you'll get it. I know what the plan says, but it is subject to change (and does quite often). Imagine the uproar if I posted dates then it didn't happen.

JayAy 09-11-2014 20:36

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

Everyone thinks they are last for a roll out, because once you get the roll out, you stop checking to see when you are going to get it.

Same as looking for something; it's always in the last place you look because you stop looking in other places once you've found it!

I stopped looking for the new UI when I found it on my Tivo this week. No noticeable change in UI speed, sometimes seems slower, but that could bewhen getting stuff from the network, who knows without the specs for what's going on? - and we aren't going to see those!

Colours are OK, certainly less stressful on the eye as they are far less saturated than on the red one.

There's a lot of empty space, but not necessarily used in the best ways to improve useability and clarity of function.

Now if we can get the updated iPlayer pushed out? That, of course, won't happen until all Tivos are on the new software, so going to be the New Year at the earliest, and I'll probably be last to get it, like with all updates ;)

Well, that's interesting.

In future could you make Swindon last for every update, just for fun? :)

(Totally not a mean spirited Swindonian exile!)

Does Biggleswade count as it's own area for these updates just out of interest? Anyway, I don't mind when this one comes as I use the TiVO much less than my partner but I know it'll results in questioning as to why the colours have all changed! :p

"Area 30" is the billing system you are on. In many cases, including yours, they aren't a single headend.

Hey, I had to suffer for nearly 19 years, I think they should have at least a little more back! :P

I still remember the Red Dwarf episode Epideme where Lister is asked what death felt like after the virus nearly killed him. The response? "Have you ever been to Swindon?". From personal experience I can attest to that! :p

No worries :) *Waves down the A1*

Worked in the area for 11 years now, lived in Biggleswade itself for 7. I must admit I have become quite attached to the area, especially the rugby community :)

Anywho, to stick on topic a little more: I don't know if it's a general EPG issue, mis-reporting or the TiVO EPG but there's times when programmes show the (S) Subtitle in the info and they don't have them, or it doesn't show it when it does!

This makes TiVo recordings a bit hit & miss as my partner is partially deaf and relies on them. As much as I would love all shows to have them I know that isn't always viable, but accurate information (An example, the Steve Wilkos show on Sky living is a big culprit of this and makes for lots of wasted recordings) would be really helpful.

That's a TiVo EPG data error, but there are several places the error could have been introduced. To help narrow it down, can you check whether it is correct on Sky's website?

That's because the Sky Sports channels are broadcast at an unusually high bit rate. 8 hours is just an average.

I shall check next time it happens. It appears there are chunks of a week or two of episodes of certain programmes that do not have subtitles but have the subtitle flag. As you say, it could by Sky mis-reporting it, so may not be VM/the TiVO system at fault. Just a small pet hate really.

In addition, on my recording of 'The Job Lot' last week, I noticed that the AD was being subtitled too! Would this be an error, or is it something that helps disabled people in a way that I haven't thought of?

The show in question on Sky living it shows as Subtitles on the Sky EPG when turning subtitles on it works as expected that said I've only tried it on tonights 6pm showing.

You mean "Charlie enters the room" was in the subtitles? That could be useful for someone with both partial sight and hearing - so they can visually confirm what they may have misheard. Maybe useful to a deaf-blind person with a subtitle-to-braille converter? Or a deaf person with tunnel vision who can't see the whole screen area? Perhaps Dilli has some ideas.

20.4.5 released in the US a few days ago, seems to be the first release that attempts to fix this problem:

So, assuming they do fix it properly in the US over the next few releases I assume we would get it the next VM release sometime late next year.

Yes, whilst watching my repeat of the ITV2 repeat, as Russell Tovey leant back at his desk (the part where he had been given ketamine) I put my subtitles on accidentally. It was subtitling the Audio Description!

About 30% of the TiVos have been done so far. We'll have to wait and see who'll be last.

First I've heard of it. Have you rung VM about it?

I'm still on the previous TiVo version and for two to three weeks images have been incredibly slow to load although they do get there eventually. Gives the impression of being congestion to whatever server serves them up and the speed is not great on other devices too. Actual streaming quality has been really good lately too.

Tbh I don't think that they have gone far enough with this update, it's still not as slick as it should be imo.

Question for Spiderplant: when all the nation's TiVo's are on the new version will there be a speed increase? I seem to recall that with previous software updates speed wasn't optimised until the rollout is completed.

Tomorrow will be 1 week since the update landed and I really like it the EPG and other menus are much easier on the eyes now and I know nothing has happened to the Iplayer but its not buffered once since the update landed.............

Despite me thinking it would look awful (based on several screen shots that I'd seen in news reports), I think that the colour looks absolutely fine. The screenshots that I thought looked awful were obviously taken from a TV set that had it's brightness settings way too high.

Not that I'm aware of, but I'm not very involved in that side of things.

Did Comedy Central (HD) used to be MRS enabled? I went to watch something the other day and it said I couldn't because of broadcaster restrictions, I was almost certain I had watched something recorded from it before

Mines been like this for a few months on both my Tivos did hope the update would have fixed the issue but still has bad as ever. Just use netflix on my Xbox instead so much faster.

I'm surprised that the screen goes black and sound drops when you go to Home, My Shows or TV Guide still, would of thought that would of been fixed by now?

Exactly.

lots of little niggling annoyances that should have been ironed out long ago

its still lagging - that spinning disc does my head in -and buggy.

And Stevenage. And agree, it is better than the screenshots I saw of it. That's not to say I love it, because I don't. But certainly nowhere near as bad as I was expecting it to be.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

I think the colour scheme is a mistake, but that's just personal preference. Switching between the menus is much faster, so I hope that stays like that. I like the partially watched bit in my shows. I've just realised that I didn't finish an episode of The Last Ship the other day. Because old TiVo stored shows in date order that would have sat low in the queue until the next episode appeared and suddenly I'd be two behind so I can already see the use for that. Where is the new what to watch now function?

You're in Seven Kings. We've discussed this previously - you were horrified to find out you are connected to Ilford.

It's accessible from My Shows and somewhere else that I can't remember right now (Search & Discover maybe?)

What to Watch Now should be in Search & Discover.

It's also near the bottom of My Shows if you revert to the 'old' My Shows without the extra left column.

In the 'new' My Shows with the extra left column, it's in More to Watch.

For what it's worth I was updated last night.

Colour much more easy on the eye (except i think the plum n red clash a little bit aesthetically speaking)

Channel change seems faster

Bringing up menus seems faster.

Accessing red button and BBCi definitely faster.

andy_m 12-11-2014 11:29

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

Found it. When I first noticed the update I didn't have what to watch now in more to watch, but it's there now.

I'd forgotten about the Ilford discussion. I've nothing against the place generally but used to go out with somebody who lived there so now I tend to blank any reference to it!

I think generally the new my shows menu is better. I like the categories for movies, sport and kids. Not having to scroll through Horrid Henry or Tom and Jerry is a real plus!

The epg is immediate. The channel change banner changes immediately but the channel itself still takes a moment or two to catch up. If the speed improvements stay over time then I'll get used to the colour. The contrast between the new colour and the blue/yellow Sky or screen is much better fwiw.

heavyside 12-11-2014 11:55

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

I've had the plum update for a couple of weeks now. Sometimes the speed is about the same as it was before the upgrade and at other times it's positively zippy. And sometimes it slows down to an absolute crawl and needs a reboot before it's back up to 'normal' speed. The speed for Netflix to load is pitiful. I have to really want to watch something to persevere.

MalteseFalcon 12-11-2014 12:18

Yes, the logo for music channel Heat is something that needs to be looked at, but apart from that no issues here. As I said, a lot better than expected.

Not a fan of the new typeface, it looks like it was chosen more for its looks than for readability and accessibility. Too thin and letters too close together. Plus the mini guide is uhg-ly! Apart from that, a very nice update.
