Initally yes, but companies are meant to make money. The cable industry has always been in debt and not made a penny in profit. I know as I have about 1 ntl sdi bond and 1 and a bit telewest bonds left. These used to be many thousands of shares....:( Yet, the cableco bosses gave themselves fat bonuses and pension packages. The late telewest boss (cob stenham) got a huge package now being spent by his wife. I don't see how that is good. And the company went bankrupt in a sea of debt in part as a result of his actions.

In the corporate world, debt is okay (not really, but just going along here) to pay for expansions/infrastructure, particularly if there is a competitor doing a land grab. But it should only be used as a short term tool, not a permanent way to run a company.

When will vm pay off the debt, 2016, 2020? I can't remember the timescales now. But i bet when the deadline approaches, vm's bosses will have yet another excuse to refinance (if they can) and prolong the debt even further.

When accountants say debt is good, I say is that how you run your household then, in debt?...It staggers growth and hinders investment opportunities as evidenced by the mess that has been the cable industry for the last 20 years and causes unnecessary pressures and distractions on managers. Not to mention the creditors can pull the plug at any time... Debt is not good and its only useless Americanised business practices that have infected the City over the last 30 years that say this.

Business debt is entirely different to personal debt.

And if personal debt is so bad, then why do so many people have mortgages? Debt is a tool that when used correctly can provide huge benefits.

Debt is great as long as you can attain it on terms that benefit you. If you can invest £xm and gain a y% return on it you'd be a fool not make that investment with debt if the interest rate of it is less than y%.

It only staggers growth and hinders investment if you're struggling under the debt, if the debt isn't on reasonable terms that aren't financially beneficial to you. Managed correctly debt DRIVES growth and investment, as it allows companies to grow faster than if they were operating entirely out of free cash flow. You simply cannot expand some businesses without debt because the cost of acquiring the necessary equipment is simply too great. Can you imagine how small the cable network would be if it was built without debt? It wouldn't exist at all.

There is no way in hell a creditor can "pull the plug at any time", loan agreements have very strict rules on when debt can and cannot be called in, if payments are being met then there is NOTHING a creditor can do to call in a debt.

Very disappointed with ESPN, they have shown no commitment to Boxing in the UK and looks unlikely now that an ESPN 2 will launch if they are giving away rights that they own for up 2 years. If an ESPN 2 was launching they would have saved rights for that to enhance content on the channel.

Would like to have Premier Sports on VM for the Boxing and Copa Sudamericana coverage they have which are ignored by Sky and ESPN.

Seems that people on content team at VM make decisions based on their personal opinions rather than what viewers want... could list of a bunch of channels that they dont carry that many people want but refuse to carry.

This is a pay channel and unless was gonna made free on XL I cant see what the issue would be carrying it... MUTV has only 60k subs and I would love to how many of them on VM... very few I bet! ;)

Yep I agree, gutted about that. Shown no commitment to Boxing in UK yet would rather force feed us American college sports, MLB & NHL which nobody really cares about. Much bigger fanbase for Boxing in UK than those sports put together. Sky get great figures for Boxing and so did Setanta... I dont get why they keep ignoring the sport.

Reckon an ESPN 2 isnt coming now as if there was they would never hand over the rights for something they own to a competitor for 2 years!

Some good news! Looks like ESPN sold the rights to the LIVE broadcasts but will still be showing the programme. I copied this from the ESPN tv listings on their website.

Sky appear now to be investing in quality, and the moves they have made to transfer budgets to the new 'Sky Living' channel and the American shows they have invested in for Sky Atlantic are proof of this. I'd certainly rather have quality over quantity any time.

This is why it is so important that we get Sky Atlantic. We are losing Bravo, Bravo 2 and Channel One. Whilst I only watched a small number of programmes from these channels, some of them were good (such as The Riches and Sarah Connor Chronicles) and I want access to every good programme that is shown. I don't care whether this is via live TV channels, video on demand (if it's reliable and doesn't miss off episodes or close the series down prematurely) or the internet (via TIVO) - I just want access to the programmes! Preferably in HD.

If Sky Atlantic is launched and we do not have access to these programmes, I will be seriously annoyed. I mean seriously annoyed. From day 1 please, Virgin Media.

Thanks Eddie.

Here's the full quote:

"TNA iMPACT! in the United Kingdom is soon to be without a
home when Bravo ceases broadcasting in the new year. This move is a
result of BSkyB purchasing Bravo and a number of other channels earlier
this year . Sky had promised to announce the relocation and time slot of
popular programming which included iMPACT! but the network still seems
to be undecided where best to put iMPACT. Due to an increasing fan
demand Sky released the following statement:

Sky:

"TNA will be broadcast on a
different Sky channel when Bravo closes, we are trying to find out
which channel this will be and will let you know as soon as we find
out"

That does kind of show that the closing of Bravo is more of a 'boo sucks to Virgin'. If they were at all interested in the viewers of the channel, they would have resolved all the what goes where before they announced it's closure

With the undoubted interest and exclusivity for VM of Tivo I cannot see Sky doing other than fighting back by retaining their exclusive channels.

This factor has made my mind up to remain with Sky for the time being.

Each to his own.

Happy New Year to you all.

I was thinking about Sky Atlantic and the recently signed carriage contracts. Surely if Sky are closing Bravo, Channel 1 etc then the contracts would include payments for these channels. So in theory Sky would have to provide alternative channels to VM or reduce the carriage fees? I wouldn't be surprised if Sky Atlantic SD and maybe some plus 1 channels turned up as replacements on VM. Obviously the HD version would be a different story though!

To be honest, I don't think that is the case. The fact is, Sky are boosting the budgets of other channels, including Living by the way, to improve the quality of the programming. This, to my mind, is a good move. However, it is surprising that Sky have not yet resolved where some of the programming from Bravo is to go at such a late stage. Let's hope that we do not miss any of the surviving programmes as a result of the late decision.

There has to be a point where OFCOM gets involved in this HD issue of SKY keeping these channels for themselves!

As I have stated before not everybody wants a satellite dish bolted onto their house, VM offer a simple multi service solution!

Happy New Year to you all.

It is right for you to wait before changing, but people are wrong to jump to conclusions about Sky Atlantic. Sky are not charging their subscribers any extra for this channel and so the revenue will come from advertising. Sky will want to boost their income to pay for these programmes and keeping it exclusive to Sky will be shooting themselves in the foot. My guess is that we will get Sky Atlantic SD from launch. Not sure about HD - they may decide to withold it if they can do so under the contractual agreements they have with Virgin Media.

I agree, mlayzell. This is the kind of useful activity OFCOM could get involved in. The only alternative is for the companies themselves to take court action, and that can take years to sort out. A very unsatisfactory situation, and distinctively uncompetitive. Maybe the Coalition Government should get involved and update the law. They need some popular legislation to pass at this time!

I agree but doubt will even get SD.

Sky got virgin by the cohones wont let it go. The smell victory.

Virgin was stupid to even be suckered sky was trying to be nice and now this is the start of the death.

Most sadly decent stuff come from america uk been very poor at making stuff and seem only interested in spending money on abomedation soaps.

Look at the dreadful money ITV spending on new bigger location for there pathetic soap. Just hint to beeb/itv not everybody likes soaps, or reality pap.

I too OLDBOY will be very very angry still want bloomin sky to reveal where my favourites are going once virgin1/bravo shut.

Then again maybe we already know SKY ATLANTIC of course so to pish virgin media customers off. Chuck will end up there no doubt I cant see it staying on living, so will spartacus and I will send very stern letter to the idiot in charge of Virgin Berkett he is the biggest pillock ever if we lose our shows.

I urge him NOW MAKE CHANNELS get bidding else you will lose virgin media TV.

Happy New Year to all on this forum, I have not posted for a while but I have still followed it, Let's hope for a better 2011 for everyone, esp Evertonians, well I am off to drink loads of Jack Daniels and prepare for a new years trip to Stoke were we hopefully get our season on track.

Thanks Media Boy, Digital Fanatic, BenMCR and any others that have provided us with helpful information this year during the Headend changes and HD channels as well as TiVo.

On the TNA front, I thought sky had an exclusive deal with wwe which meant they couldn't show the competition on their channels, if so Sky maybe messing TNA around, and do what channel 4 did with wwe, put it on a poor station where its regularly moved about from its schedule.
Espn would be a good move, Living works for us cos its HD but I fear for it, they should have a home for it by now, its not like Wrestling is new to Sky, anyway rant over enjoy your night.

I'm sure they'll make another new channel with the reminants of Bravo 1 & 2 and Channel One so that VM have to negotiate with them, there is too much programming left to waste.

Otherwise how is Danny Dyer going to cope when he's not making direct-to-DVD films if he can't make his documentaries...

We should probably have two threads, one for the rumours from 'insiders' and one that contains details confirmed by VM – admittedly it may be a quieter thread but at least we will know it is fact and not fiction presented as fact.

It is becoming very tedious trawling through 136 pages and 2036 posts only to find that some 3D content will be added and ITV1+1 will launch.
