Surely if Sky dropped the HD charge, then OFCOM would request that they cease to charge Virgin customers extra, as they have asked that the HD charge is fair to all customers?

Personally, I'm disappointed as I'd hoped it would be added free for XL and SS subcribers, but if OFCOM have agreed that £5.89 plus VAT is fair, and Virgin are charging £7, then I don't think that anyone has reason to complain. I'm not going to pay £7 for 2 channels, I can view the content is SD, and the quality is good enough to not be able to justify an extra £7.

I must admit this is a deal breaker. I can get a phoneline with BT (£10), £77 gets me all sky sports, movies, and ESPN, and all HD plus up to 20mb.

I have been thinking and was going to stay. Now just dropped a line to BT to see about getting my line reconnected. Sigh..life is change :)

I dont think Virgin will be too bothered if people start to cancel their Sports/Movies subs. Virgin do not make enough of a profit on these channels for it to make much of a difference. Remember, only about 20% of subscribers take the Sports/Movies.

As for the current TV packs, we as Virgin customers get an ever improving selection of HD channels for "no extra cost", we get ESPN's 4(soon to be 5) channels included in the price of the XL pack, and we also have the choice of taking SKY's sports and/or Movie channels amongst other premium content.

Now Virgin are giving us he chance to get some of these premium channels in HD, if you want them. Their pricing of these channels has been set by the company who owns these channels, SKY. Virgin, I think, would love to give us these channels "at no extra cost", but they are a business, so therefore they have to make money so that they can continue to trade. So they cannot buy something, then give it away for nothing.

If you want these extra channels, you will pay. If you dont want them, then you wont pay, simple as that. It's up to each individual to get what they want.

As for the pricing structure of these and any other pay TV channels, if you want to blame someone, blame SKY. Why? Well, when SKY started they started throwing money around as though it was going out of fashion. You only have to look at what they pay for Premiershit football. They are paying roughly £350m a season. Now everyone knows that there is no other company who would be able to come close to offering that amount of money, so they could quite easily have offered £250m or even £200m, and they would still have got the gig. Just to prove this point, when the OFCOM rulings came out, the FA, Premier League, RFU, ECB, PDC and a few others were all ******** bricks, because they all rely on SKY's over-generous offers to survive.

The one thing that I cannot agree with is this "per box" ********. We all pay to get the Cable/Satellite installed, then we pay for whatever box we want, then we pay for whatever content we want. Having to pay extra for the same content on an extra box is tantamount to theft. Put it like this, what would people say if the Govt decided that you had to pay a license fee for each TV in your home. This is the one thing that OFCOM should have kicked into touch as soon as SKY started it. But its too late now, because they know that if they upset SKY too much, football, cricket, rugby and darts would collapse under the weight of debt, when SKY said "we're off".

Infact, I'm contemplating dropping VM TV altogether for a while, and then returning on a mates rates deal once Tivo is launched, so I'll end up paying VM even less.

VM survived, and indeed prospered, when they refused to pay the unreasonable amounts set by Sky for the Sky basics in SD. I'm sure they'll survive the small percentage of people who leave over this.

Personally I won't be paying for HD. In fact I won't even be subscribing to Sky Sports until the red button is working.

Blimey...ALL of you quoting this are not going to get it are you. Definete brick wall going there.

That was the advert for the current packages. Do ANY of you realise that both the SS & SM are premium and additional content that were not available and at no point be factored into any decision when you signed up. SS & SM HD were not available, and were not slated to be available, so Virgin would not have accounted for SS & SM HD when running it....and should not have been expected to cover every bloody HD possibility.

The advert is and was correct and not misleading in ANY shape or form as while it has been run, there was and has been NO charge for HD. That SS and SM HD is going to be available changes the playing field and future adverts will be reworded or a disclaimer added.

But it seems that for some of you think that perhaps Virgin should have written a legal dialogue with their adverts to cover every possible future channel line up be it in SD / HD or anything else D, so that those of you who seem to want something for nothing can fully understand what you are actually paying for in the first place and know what you may have to pay a little extra for in the future...if you want the extra.

I'm a happy Vigin Subscriber who will gladly and finally watching SKY Premier League games once again in glorious HD, all for a the price of a couple of pints a month....yep thats all. BRING IT ON

Not trying to throw a spanner into the works, but wouldn't the negotiations for the premium HD channels have taken months, maybe even years, of complex wrangling? It was made public April 30th. I'll happily be corrected though.

Just to add, on the promo on the website...the HD promo mentions '13' channels no more no less. 13 HD channels as part of the NO HD charge blurb. Note:...not for ever, not every additional HD channel.

I think the £7 is expensive, but my solution is to stick with sky sports SD which I have managed with for years, then when the HD versions are included I'll take them. Don't lets fall for Sky's tricks. Virgin clearly are making no money on the HD anyway. So looking forward to new season and continuing to get all sports channels in SD, so won't miss anything. Film 4 HD tomorrow at no extra cost! Chill everyone

We all have our opinons but I just dont get what all the fuss is about - The Dark Side charge £10 for HD content.

XL/VIP customer get all 14 HD channels at no extra cost, free ESPN which Sky charge between £8-£10

Were getting another 20 HD channels of which 13 are Sky Sports/Movies Prem HD £7 charge, with the remaining 7 covering the likes of ESPN Americia/Sky Basic HD channels at no extra cost to XL/VIP customers - and more can be added.

So all in all XL/VIP customer can get 34 HD channels, ESPN Pack for an extra charge of £7

God were hard done by - Sky can charge £18-£20 for the above.

I think the frustration for VIP Customers is the way the package has been devalued since it first came out. When VIP was first launched, it offered a saving of £26.50 on standard prices. This has now been shrunk to just £6.45 as price reductions have not been passed on. VIP used to include the best of everything available, but since the launch of 50Mb broadband this has not been the case, and now of course we effectively will no longer be receiving the top TV package as part of the bundle.

I've waited 4 years for these channels, and at £7 I'm still going to add them. The biggest disappointment for me is the "per box" price, and I can't really justify paying another £7 to get this on my new shiny V-HD box as well as the V+.

The redirect had placed a % value inside the link which is supposed to resolve to something, however had rendered a "Cannot find this page" error.

So if it was £85 then and its say £92 now (£7 increase) now does that not mean the other services have got more expensive also - remember you don’t have 2 for £20, 3 for £30 anymore and the fact VIP is offering more.

What are people moaning about, you don't want the HD services, you don't pay simple. Be grateful we are getting the red button (includ champions league) I pay £71 pm for the following

V+HD (XL + SKY SPORTS)
2ND BOX (STANDARD V BOX)
10MB BROADBAND
UNLIMITED PHONE CALLS + LINE RENTAL

With Sky I'd be paying over £20 more per month, take Sky Sports 3&4 HD out of the equation there ain't much there. Virgin Customers will benefit from this in the long term. Look at the facts

ESPN HD + SKY Sports 1 & 2 HD total cost p/m = £28

with Sky = £41 p/m from September

Be grateful Virgin are getting these services, Sky Sports HD was always going to cost a little extra.

Funny that mate as I have just had a quote from sky for all the above your talking about and it was well under £12.00 cheaper than your £71.00 your paying plus you get Sky Sports 3 and 4 HD and well over 40 channels, if you dont believe me ring sky and get a quote, I will post up the conversation with sky rep when I get a min, that was installation waived too

I believe XL broadband price has come down significantly and was £35 when VIP launched, and there was also a £10 per month V+ charge that was scrapped. Neither saving was passed on to VIP, yet the most recent price raises have been.

Someone earlier on the thread said it was like SKy are now controlling VM's prices and I think at least for a while that is correct until the Ofcom thing is sorted out once and for all. Plus, now that VM, BT etc get access to Sky's good stuff, the value of it to Sky goes down, they will bid less for sports/film rights in the future, thus ultimately bringing prices for all. In theory, anyway.

But as its a bit like Lord Of The Flies on here at the moment, I'm off to kill the pig.:)
