Saying that, anyone else notice a drop in Arse's game since Man United beat them? Perhaps we're seeing the inevitable slip in form which brings them back down to earth.

Nottm Forest 2-4 Fulham (AET)
King 71 Radzinski 86, 93
Reid 104 McBride 101
Cole 119

Plucky, eventually succumbing at the death. With a side assembled from misfits and youngsters, at a fraction of that of the opponents.

And by Coleman's own admission "Forest were the better team over 90 minutes"

If we play like that for the rest of the season, we can make the playoffs!

I don't like the sound of this at all. :(

Glazer seems to be edging his way in to united bit by bit, the sign of a man without the collateral to make a formal bid for the club, what's worse is if he succeeds, united could go into debt :disturbd:

Maybe the Irish duo have something up their sleeves to counter the bid, or maybe they are waiting just for the cash.

Re: [Merged] Football talk

Spurs 4 Arsenal 5.....

Many people say a leaking defence is what led to Man United slips in recent years, so perhaps Arsenal's bubble has prematurely burst. They've certainly been letting in quite a few goals recently. Even though Arse still won, didn't Middlesborough manage to get 3 past them at Highbury a few weeks ago?

i'd rather sell giggs and get a decent left winger who is younger instead.. maybe someone who can actually beat a defender and puts in a decent performance..

you are right though it's just gamesmanship with the contract.. look at Wes Brown he signed in the end and i'm sure Carroll will sign in the end as well..

Have to disagree slightly, the flowing, attacking football was of the highest order, as good as I have seen this season from any team, with regards to the defence, don't forget that this Lyon team where unbeaten in any competition until last night, they are a very good side indeed. You have to give them credit for their open attacking play as well.

Ronaldo is still diving and playing for free kicks too many times for my liking but we aer starting to look like the United of old. Still not quite there .. how many saves did the keeper really have to make ? Not that many for all the attacking football we showed.

chelsea in the semi's and Fergie's never lost a domestic semi-final before.. Just hope we maintain that record..

Was quite a good game last night but we had more a team of reservers and they had a team of younysters..

after a goal after 20 seconds expected a few more though.. would have liked to have see Rossi for longer as well..

Miller was outstanding.

Russ 02-12-2004 11:35

Re: [Merged] Football talk

We're not going to beat Chelsea in the semi, no way, unless Fergie changes his policy of fielding reserves. Chelsea may not use their full strength team but they're still on an upward curve and even though the League Cup is still seen as a mickey mouse trophy, it'll give them a huge confidence boost by beating United and going on to win it.

sherer 02-12-2004 11:58

Re: [Merged] Football talk

i think you are right there Russ. Chelsea have a squad of 22 first team players so even though they fielded their second string team the other night it was way stronger than ours. We had our reservers out rather than the youngsters last night but Richardson and Eagles, etc at the moment just aren't in the same league.

Maybe Fergie will think of his record and field a strong side so he doesn't loose that.

i wouldn't want Fortune or P. Neville in there.. Both are rubbish and are bound to give away a free kick or pen in the last 5 mins..

Could play Spector at LB and use G. Neville at RB

eagles shows some promise but needs more games.. Miller was superb last night and ran the show.. Would like to see Rossi start but as a semi final maybe best to leave him on bench..

better have Ruud and Ronaldo on the bench just in case...

I like both Fortune and P. Neville. Neville is good at what he does, hes not the most skillfull of players but he breaks up the plays very well and gets the balls to players who can do something with the ball.

P Neville was great against Arsenal the last two times when we played them at home in the league.

Re: [Merged] Football talk

guess we have to agree to disagree on this one.

Phil nev has no footballing brain at all. All he does is pass to whoever is standing to his left or right... sometimes even when it's the opposition !!

He's doesn't so much break up play as kick and give fouls away.. Witness the push on Porto last season with 5 mins to go right on the edge of the box that lead to them scoring and knocking us out..

Also the Romania game at Euro 2000 where he slide in on a player going nowhere instead of shepherding them to the byline..

All he can really do is foul and square passes.. i'm sure there's plenty of other players in our youth \ reservers who can do the same and more adn have better footballing brains as well.. He's had his chance and not lived up the quality we expect at United

Thats what he is there to do. Break up the play and give the ball to the more skillfull players. I don't know any player who doesn't give the ball away sometimes

Yes he gave away a free, but he wasn't to blame for the goal, that was O'Shea and Howard.

Sir Alex knows more about football than you or me, he doesn't want P. Neville to leave. He has been picked by successive England managers.

after Wenger's comments about Nistelrooy i wonder what he thought of the dive Pires took to win the free kick.. Think a draw was a fair result but once again Arsenal got lucky.. For all the ref knew when he said the free kick could have been taken quickly half the chelsea team could have been off the pict changing boots or getting treatment.. he never looked round to size up where everyone was he just looked at Henry and said do you want to take it

He doesn't have to check if they were ready. A free kick is there to benefit the team fouled, if the other team isn't ready then thats their fault.

Gudjonsson should have stayed where he was.

sherer 13-12-2004 12:41

Re: [Merged] Football talk

it's the consistency thing again.. some refs let that happen and others make you take it again.. surely the ref should at lest take a proper look round and size up the play first though ?

Why should they though? For a free kick all thats required is that the ball is in the correct spot and stationary. Sometimes the ref will call a quick free kick back - if the player hasn't asked if he can take it quickly, or the ref is sorting something else out. You also take a gamble by taking it quickly, for example if the ball had hit Gudjonsson who was only a few yards away then Henry would not have been allowed to retake the kick.

What if the ball is at the other end and the keeper decides to clean his boots, the other team gets a break-away and scores, should the goal be disallowed because the keeper wasn't ready? If you're not ready for a free kick to be taken then thats your fault.

ian@huth 13-12-2004 13:04

Re: [Merged] Football talk

They should do something about players standing near the ball to prevent free kicks being taken. If a player does this then the ref ought to move the ball forward ten yards and or book the player.

With all Premiership matches being televised now there ought to be a fifth official in radio contact with the ref who is watching the TV monitors and advising the ref on things he or the linesmen can't see. This could be particularly useful in decisions which could result in a card being shown.

Just a pity that it was a blatant dive from Pires in the first place.:td:

well we had the chance to close the gap just like we could have built on the win against arsenal when we played pompey and threw it away..

a football match lasts for 90 mins and we were never in the second half.. showed our lack of depth in our squad as well.. on the bench we had bellion, o'shea, fortune and fletcher none of home are match winners that you can bring on..

the goal from them was coming right from the start of the second half and none of the team ever got going.. still if rooney had squared the ball instead of shooting just after they had scored then scholes and giggs were queing up for a tap in

Fantastic goal, Carroll had no chance.

we should have had several more goals in the first half and never really came out for the second.. the goal had been coming ever since half time and we never got going in the second half.. with a rubbish bench like that we had little chance for changing things either

well once again the FA have shown their consistance and how they aren't biased against Man U. if your name is Nistelrooy and you make a bad tackle you get banned for three games.

if you are called Robbie Savage and you stick your finger in another players eye nothing happens at all.

Champions League draw

Real Madrid v Juventus

FC Porto v Inter Milan

Barcelona v Chelsea

Werder Bremen v Lyon

Liverpool v Bayer Leverkusen

PSV Eindhoven v Monaco

Manchester United v AC Milan

Bayern Munich v Arsenal

Some cracking ties there.

Remind me where he started his career of violence?

Bayern - tough, but could have been worse. Good to see Man Utd and Chelsea getting nice, easy draws - Chelski - Barca should be cracking.

Hahah yeah the only reason hes violent is cause he started his career at Man utd....

You have to admit its stange that Wenger gets fined £15,000 for making a comment about another player and Savage gets let off after sticking his finger in another players eye.

maybe Fergie should call Pires a diver.. create video evidence on it then get his players to throw Pizza at Wenger and see what happens to Man U

I don't call AC Milan an easy draw.
