Myself, I would have thought anyone making that sort of statement may lack social interaction skills..... ;)

Not Dolby Digital that signal is only on the HD channels if your lucky.

HD channels are Dolby Digital all the time.

Your issue is you seem to think Dolby Digital is 5.1 and 5.1 only, it's not.
Dolby digital is just AC-3 audio, and can be any number of channels up to 5.1. On some HD shows it will be 5.1, on others just 2.0. Both of these are STILL Dolby Digital. There is no point in time when a HD channel will not be broadcasting Dolby Digital audio.

That your amp isn't telling you it's Dolby Digital doesn't change the fact that it is.

Anyone know when ESPN HD will be showing in the TV guide? So far its just ESPN, I want to record the UFC in advance but cannot do this as ESPN HD is not showing?

TIA

Go to TV Guide press (9) for more then (5) for High definition and it is there. Seems strange though because it is in my TV Guide as normal.

Some people are trying to find it by going to the sports section in the TV guide, but it's not in there due to the way the VM epg works, at the moment a channel can only be in one category, so you'll only find the HD channels in the all channel and HD channel listings, as they can't be in both HD and sport for instance.

I understood Dolby Digital was bringing your cinema experience to your home, and its at its best when used as a 5:1 system. And my amp does change instantly from Dolby Digital to pro logic or "stereo" on certain HD channels, so whether you are saying its not broadcasting a 5:1 signal on certain programs and thats why it changes, My point still being the sound is nowhere near as good as it should be, I thought HD was a 5:1 experience not 2 or 3.

The error is "You thought" ie you assumed. So you have several people tell you how it works. Believe it or not there was a time even DD 2.0 was used in the cinemas. DD 2.0 is way better then bog standard stereo that we have had to put up with on broadcast TV. It has far more fidelity.

No, the point of HD is that it can be 5.1 not that it is. But it must support Dolby AC-3.

For instance there is no point making a HD documentary in 5.1

We are probably better of having this discussion in the other thread HD Channels finally here thread, rather then this one.

It can only be a 5.1 experience on things that are produced with 5.1 sound though, and a huge amount of things aren't made in 5.1, simply because the cost of doing so is pointless as they don't need surround sound.

I noticed that too, makes it strange as to look up the ESPN channels you have to go to two different sections

But the sound is so much better

---------- Post added at 15:51 ---------- Previous post was at 15:47 ----------

I think we'll call it a day on this, I suppose I was just expecting everything to sound as good as a blu-ray by now on the V+, after 20 years ago of having the amp connected to the vhs in nicam stereo the sound has not improved as much as it should have.

The sound on Dolby Digital 2.0 is better than on an SD channel.

What you have to look at is what sort of programs actually benefit from surround sound, with most shows the picture that is infront of you is all there is going on, there's nothing going on behind you for you to be getting sound from, so you've only go sound coming from the front. With most TV it's like looking out of the window, you don't expect to look out the window and hear things going on behind you from things that you can see happening out the window do you? You just expect to be getting normal stereo sound.

It's pointless doing 5.1 sound just for the sake of 5.1 sound when it makes no sense in the context of the program.
