Re: Reform UK's chronicles

Russia and Reform UK from that unlikely source: Dan Hodges of the Daily Mail

Quote:

'Yes, Reform have been on our radar for a while now, and before that Ukip,' one senior source in the British security and intelligence community told me.

'It's primarily because of the way the Russians have been attempting to infiltrate them. Gill [Former leader of Reform UK Wales] wasn't an isolated case. 'An example of this relates to Gill's 'handler' Voloshyn, who was himself being managed by a key ally of Vladimir Putin called Vladislav Surkov. Nicknamed 'the Grey Cardinal', Surkov was in charge of Putin's destabilisation operations in the West.'Surkov had a list of Western politicians who were deemed to be potentially sympathetic to Russia, and Gill was on it,' a second security services source told me. 'But he wasn't alone. So was another Reform MEP.'

A separate reason Reform may have come to the attention of the British law and order and security establishment is via Cottrell's links to the former Iron Curtain state of Montenegro. Cottrell is based there, and has been visited by Farage and other members of the senior Reform leadership.

While there is no suggestion that Cottrell is involved in such activities, the state is also regarded by UK officials as a major hub for money laundering, people trafficking and – crucially – Russian intelligence operations.

As another figure close to the intelligence community told me: 'Montenegro sits at the sweet spot for the Russians. It's heavily integrated with a lot of major EU and Western institutions.

For all Reform's protestations of innocence, the allegations of sleaze – and worse – keep mounting.

Meanwhile, the party's various self-pitying conspiracy theories keep falling down. The reality is Gill was indeed an agent of Russian influence. And it stretches credibility to breaking point to believe Putin's vast intelligence apparatus was solely focused on a single, obscure MEP from Llangefni.

Then there is 'Posh George', who sits at the centre of the current Reform sleaze storm. He was not initially a person of interest to the UK intelligence services, but first came to the attention of law and order agencies in the United States.

The Federal operation that cornered Cottrell began in 2014. That was two years before Brexit. A full decade before Farage stunned the political establishment by storming into Parliament and soaring to the top of the polls.

To construct this masterful operation to – in Jenrick's words – 'Stop Reform from delivering the change that this country so desperately needs' – the British security establishment didn't just have to be Machiavellian, they had to be psychic. 'We haven't been tracking Ukip and Reform,' one senior security official explained. 'We've been tracking the Russians tracking Ukip and Reform.

'In the beginning, Putin thought they were just a useful potential asset in his disruption and propaganda efforts, which is why they targeted Gill. It's only in the last 18 months that they've seriously started to regard them as a potential party of government.'

Nigel Farage turned down taxpayer-funded security which reportedly included a trained driver, car, and bodyguard last year because he deemed it “inadequate”.

The Reform UK leader was offered the package, which was on the same level as high-profile Cabinet ministers and Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, following police advice, according to The i Paper.

But Mr Farage turned the security down. In a statement to The Independent, Reform UK said the offering, which came days after the assissination of Charlie Kirk, did not match the threat against the party leader.

“Reform took the responsible decision to maintain proper protection rather than gamble with his life,” the statement said.

The emergence of the refusal comes after Reform home affairs spokesman Zia Yusuf claimed the state was “providing no protection whatsoever” for Reform’s MPs in the wake of Ann Widdecombe’s alleged killing.

Man arrested over threat to kill Nigel Farage

A man has been arrested on suspicion of threatening to kill Nigel Farage. It comes after a post on social media warned the Reform UK leader: “I am going to shoot you in the head if you win.”

The alleged threat was posted on X on May 8, the day after the local and mayoral elections. A person then allegedly responded to Mr Farage's tweets with further threats to life after the Reform leader celebrated the party's local election success online.

Quote:

Nigel Farage is now even less popular than Starmer was before the PM resigned

Nigel Farage’s popularity among the public has plummeted to its lowest level in the past ten years, a new YouGov survey has found, placing him below Keir Starmer just before the PM resigned.

The pollster found just 22% have a favourable view of the Reform UK leader, while 68% are unfavourable – including 56% who say they are very unfavourable.

That 46% gap between his negative and positive rating is bigger than the 45% recorded by Starmer before he announced he was stepping down.

It is also bigger than the 42% gap between favourable and unfavourable ratings for Boris Johnson immediately after the first ‘Partygate’ revelations.

They're judged on how well they ultimately reflect the results of elections.

They make their money on being trusted to do market research correctly; elections are just a small part of what they do, but if they're seen to be wrong, then it impacts their business. Companies want to commission reliable pollsters.

Just because I know you all love polls ;)

Quote:

Labour has overtaken Reform UK for the first time in more than a year in a leading opinion poll after Andy Burnham’s first week in Downing Street.

The More in Common poll found 28 per cent of the public would vote for Labour if a general election were held tomorrow. This was four percentage points higher than the 24 per cent of respondents who said they would back Reform, Nigel Farage’s party.

The survey of 2,061 adults carried out between July 24 and July 27 showed Labour had gained 4 percentage points, while Reform had lost 2 points, compared with a poll the think tank conducted on July 22.

So how many would you poll?

Spoiler:

A sample size near 2,000 yields a tiny margin of error of ~2.16%, making it much easier to detect small shifts or close races (e.g., a 51% vs 49% split) that a 1,000-person survey (MOE ±3.1%) might miss. It hits the optimal threshold where adding more respondents costs significantly more time and money without offering much added precision

Tell me how a loaded question (every parent in the UK) tries to invalidate the established science of statistics? ;)

The survey is a statistical representation of a representative sample, which has been proven (within a margin of error of approx. +/- 3%) to provide (a high % of the time) results which reflect the real world.

The last poll that I saw on one of the political programmes last Sunday showed Labour had improved and were now the leading party, Reform were second after losing support, the Conservatives had improved to become the third most popular party.

All the others remained the same, apart from the Greens who appear to have lost some support.

If this trend continues it looks like we will be back to the traditional two party contest.

I think that the previous success of the Greens and the current improvement for Labour must have been down to Labour supporters switching support back from Green to Labour following the change of leadership from Starmer to Burnham.

Re: Reform UK's chronicles

So, where are we now?

Nigel Farage
If Farage wins the upcoming Clacton by-election, he will face the existing inquiry into the £5 million gift from Christopher Harborne, and a new one into undisclosed benefits from convicted fraudster George Cottrell, aka Posh George. The latter, by the way, is trying to get Trump to pardon his conviction.

If Farage is sanctioned for failing to declare the gifts, a second by-election could be triggered if the investigation concludes with a suspension of more than 10 days and a recall petition in Clacton achieves support from 10% or more of the voters.

Reform UK
Reform itself is also under investigation by the Metropolitan Police over £1m donations it has received and whether the ultimate donor was eligible to make them. The £1m from Fiona Cottrell (mother of Posh George) was routed with two separate payments of £250k made directly on 9 and 29 May 2024 and two separate payments of £250k made via Tice's company Britain Means Business on 10 and 12 June 2024.

The latest Sunday Times report
This new report is about Farage's defence of the £5m personal gift from Christopher Harborne. Farage's defence now looks a lot weaker as his political activities in 2024 have been found to go back months earlier than he claimed.

Quote:

Nigel Farage struck Reform comeback deal long before election

Supervised by the convicted fraudster George Cottrell, the agreement undermines Farage’s claim about when he decided to return to politics

Nigel Farage struck a secret deal to return as leader of Reform UK months before the general election.

Farage negotiated the pact with Richard Tice, then the leader, in March and April 2024. George Cottrell, the convicted fraudster who had been secretly bankrolling Farage, supervised the discussions.

Under the terms of the deal, once Farage became leader Reform would repay or write off more than £1 million in outstanding loans it had received from Tice’s company.

The deal was first presented by Farage and Cottrell to the party’s treasurer in mid-May. Its existence undermines the Reform leader’s claim that he had no intention until June 2024 of returning to politics. Farage has used this to defend his failure to declare *donations made to him in the year before he was elected as an MP, which triggered two parliamentary investigations.

Farage has claimed repeatedly that he did not need to declare a £5  million gift from the crypto*billionaire Christopher Harborne or in-kind benefits from Cottrell, as he was a media personality at the time. MPs must declare any benefit in any way connected to their “political activities” received in the 12 months before their election.

He told the Triggernometry podcast last month: “At that period of my life, from 2021 to the third of June 2024, I was a broadcaster, I was someone that appeared on celebrity TV *programmes, I was somebody that promoted some financial market products, but I was an influencer, I wasn’t in politics.”

Farage did not have to declare the £5m because it was an unconditional gift. The same would apply if he was an MP at the time, so some are getting the wrong end of the stick, it seems.

Farage won’t take him back. Lowe is more trouble than he’s worth.

If you think conditions weren't attached you'll fall for anything....

I think you're being very polite with that reply. I thought bullshit would be a more appropriate response.

There is no such thing as an unconditional gift - well unless it’s to your significant other or immediate family member. So unless ‘r Nigel is/was in some kind of intimate relationship with Harborne or Cottrell, it stinks doesn’t it?

XTC could have written this for Nigel

We're only making plans for Nigel
We only want what's best for him
We're only making plans for Nigel
Nigel just needs that helping hand

'Any interest or benefit that might be reasonably considered to influence the MP'

I think this is the issue. Do you surely think that the public don't consider that a £5m gift would influence someone? MPs are asked to consider how the general public would view it, and if there is any doubt, to declare it.

Furthermore, the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner is investigating the £5m gift. If the matter was as clear cut as you perceive it to be, it would not be investigated.

You've also not commented on the other benefits from Posh George which Farage failed to disclose.

I think Lowe's talking of a pact on his terms, not a return to Reform UK.

It just looks like a publicity stunt to me. If Lowe was serious, he would negotiate behind the scenes and not by releasing a public video.

Does Reform think it's above the rules, is it just incompetent or is this a dead cat designed to distract us?

Reform UK's deputy leader Richard Tice under investigation by parliamentary standards watchdog

Richard Tice, the Reform UK MP for Boston and Skegness, is being investigated by parliamentary authorities for failing to declare an interest.

Tice says the investigation relates to not declaring an interest when talking about Israel in a Westminster Hall debate.

Enough about the Reform UK MPs… :D

(how long before Jenrick/Braverman launch a leadership bid?)

I don't think Jenrick will!

The Metropolitan Police are currently investigating donations made to him from a US businessman in 2024 whilst he was still in the Conservative Party.

Let’s cut to the chase. He’s had proper legal advice and has done nothing wrong. All allegations thrown at Farage are found not to be correct. Oh, and the nonsense allegations on the £80,000 loan against Tice have been rejected.

A complaint regarding an £80,000 loan was recently dropped after the watchdog decided there was insufficient evidence to investigate.

Wow, who’d have thought it? Next one, please….

He’s said he’s had the "proper legal advice" - that’s not the same as "he’s had the proper legal advice"…

If he had "proper legal advice", why doesn’t he publish it?

Nonsense; we all know that ChatGPT, or Claude or Gemini by far give the ‘best’ legal advice, their slop is far better than the slop you get on Facebook etc.

Did I really need to add the /sarcasm tag, or was it obvious?;)

I'm sure that Paul Flowers, the Crystal Methodist who ran the Co-op Bank also received proper legal advice. Whether he followed it is a different matter!

Let's put our captain obvious hats on! Farage can do without all this negative publicity from the £5m and other gifts which have seen his personal ratings slide. Heck, he's even gone to the bother of calling a by-election.

If he could have prevented the decline in his ratings by releasing a document that cleared him, and saved him calling a by-election, he would have done. He hasn't and I think we can all work out why. ;)

Farage in 2022 tells Farage in 2026 his idea is a waste of time and resources…

You appear to be confusing "hangs on to your every word" with "points out instances of Cognitive Dissonance"… ;)

Anyhoo, from the Survey you posted, good news for Labour - thank you for bringing it to our attention…
