It's a laptop. But my point is that as long as you sit close enough (about 2 feet in my case), you can benefit from UHD resolution even on a small screen.

I do like a small font. People often look over my shoulder and ask "How can you read that?" ;)

It does seem to tie in nicely with the removal of ITV box sets from on demand.

Looks like Virgin have screwed something up yet again though as people on the lower tiers are complaining they can't access it.

Apparently subs codes for "Player" and above have now been added, so the Virgin TV Ultra HD channel should now be available to anyone with a V6 or 360 box. Better late than never. :D

Rumour: Is ViacomCBS set to rebrand Paramount Network as 5Action???

A poster over on DS Forum has started a thread called 5Action, is it coming to Freeview? but I have been working to see if I can find anything on the web to back this rumour up with no luck.

A other poster think ViacomCBS are maybe thinking about axing the Paramount Network brand ahead of Paramount + launch in 2022.

The logic of it being Paramount Network is the most likely, in my opinion The only other remote possibility is that the CBS channels are rebranding (again), CBS Justice used to be CBS Action. But those are a joint-venture, and the Paramount idea makes more sense to me.

That's the whole point. They can't have a Paramount TV channel pumping out repeats of Police Interceptors and Traffic Cops, Sewermen and westerns, when they are in the midst of launching Paramount+ as a premium OTT service. 5Spike should never have been rebranded to Paramount Network in the first place.

If I was working for ViacomCBS I would have pick January 26th to "launch" 5Action as 5Action channel number on Freeview is set to move up by one as part of a January 26th Freeview changes to make room for BBC THREE.:dunce:

A first qtr change in 2022 for a viacom channel has been in place since May last year we just didn't know which channel.
In honestly a lot of specualation at work thought it was going to being 5STAR that was changing.

If they did that they'd likely get inundated (well, more than usual) with complaints wondering where Paramount went because the channel number change occurred simultaneously, no matter how much on-air promotion about the change they did prior. Sometimes doing two changes at the same time is a bad idea, not everyone understands changes and they just lash out and get angry. The 5Select transmission change on Freeview was just one change rather than two and didn't go down well with some, I read a fair few posts along the lines of "my dad loves the channel, what's happened?" in that instance.

Back to topic, well closer, will the HD version survive in the long run?

Ah the season of good will is present with you isnt it.

I think you've made about 4 posts now trying to attack someone who has done a nice little end of year award competition which has no bearing on you whatsoever if you dont want to get involved. For all the things in life currently you can get worked up and passionate about i dont think this is it. For someone who claims "Do I care what you think" you seem to really care about the end of year media boy awards which others may enjoy (i do)

Why bother typing on your phone or keyboard something which is just a bit nasty? Like what does it accomplish. Short answer nothing. So leave us to the things we like and you can just carry on with what you like :) I like you Itshim but these last few posts have just been rather nasty to be honest and i didnt expect that.

Now i'm going to post my hopes for 2022 for virgin media:

1) Disney plus
2) New software launching on the tivo v6 (blooming heck what happened to that)
3) UHD sky channels for those with UHD tvs (unlike me!)
4) Sky sports getting la liga back (this would involve premier sports liquidating i know...)
5) Fox news to launch a linear channel so i can laugh at them (yes ive been asking this for several years now and due to the fact theyve gone off sky its very unlikely but maybe theyll try and seize it the gap left by CNN
6) Some bizarre messaging app on tivo so you can see what other people are watching and message them (yeah this is an odd one)
7) Discounts and bonuses for virgin mobile customers like you get on virgin media/o2

Merry christmas all btw! I'm working the next two days but i've smashed my work tasks in by staying up late the last couple of nights so i'm just going to coast the next two days...

We had that for over 2 years - it was called Oomph.

There are still discounts available within Virgin Mobile for having multiple plans - https://www.virginmedia.com/mobile/family-plan-benefits

And Virgin Mobile customers still the included social messaging that O2 customers don't

2) They never said they were going to automatically update everyone on Tivo V6, updating to TV360 wipes recordings and features, massively bad PR move. You can choose to upgrade though.
3) Sky don't have full-time UHD channels themselves on their own Satellite, just Red Button. That said, VM don't even have that.
4) Premier Sports don't need to go belly up for Sky to get La Liga, sports contracts move broadcasters all the time.
6) There used to be a UK App Service that worked on tablets/mobiles where it would match you with people watching what you were watching so you chat with everyone else. It was for all TV platforms.

la liga UK rights are up in a summer of 2022 - Source Wikipedia.

Quote:

In February 2019, it was announced that Premier Sports had secured La Liga rights in the UK & Ireland, showing 4 live matches per round from matchday 25 until the end of the 2018/2019 season. Premier Sports also broadcast weekly highlights, previews and magazine shows. Leading on from this, in September, Premier Sports confirmed that they had become exclusive UK rights-holders to La Liga, starting with matchday 4 of the 2019–20 season until the end of the 2021–22 season. They added that most matches would be put on the LaLigaTV channel, which would become available to all existing Premier Sports subscribers on the Premier Player from October, and on Sky by January 2020. One match per round would be broadcast live on sister free-to-air channel FreeSports.
Also is Fox News set to launch (in all but name) with a launch of Talk TV in early 2022.

Discovery+ on Sky is been given away for free again for another 12 months so doesn't look like it's doing well, I wouldn't subscribe but it is available on the Amazon Prime Video channels.

Sky don't have full time UHD channels on red button or EPG. The red button UHD is around five or so sport events each week. VM have two UHD channels in the EPG which is two more than Sky have in their SkyQ EPG.

Most Sky Sports UHD is in HDR and there is a selection of movies which have HDR too.

By the looks of things no more local TV will be added to Virgin.

In Scotland we lose local TV on Channel 159 when STV closedown STV2.

Anyway That's TV is a poor man of Local TV with only 50mins per week of local programmes (News) with a rest being That's TV Gold.

I won’t be losing any sleep over that, MB. Frankly, the EPG would be easier to navigate and subscriptions lowered if VM would just ditch the channels which are not worth having.

We all have different tastes, it’s true, but the viewing figures should give you a clue as to which ones could be ditched with almost no-one noticing.

Niche interests in all walks of life (not just talking about TV here) would be unviable and extinguished if not for cross-subsidising. And everyone has an interest that barely anyone else has.

Yes, I know there seems to be a lot of mediocre stuff out there, but there's also stuff that one person would call rubbish and another would call worthwhile, or even a gem.

But they are dire, Rillington, and virtually no-one watches them.

Given the tiny amount of local content on these channels, you might be just as informed watching the regional news programmes on BBC and ITV.

I've seen every season of NCIS up to 18, but Di$ney pulled Fox and has hidden it on their premium subscription service, something I cannot justify the cost.

It will be cheaper to wait to buy it on Blu-Ray.

I’ve got Disney+ myself and is 100% worth the cost, especially if you take the £80 annual subscription. Like HBO Max in the US, Disney won’t want their originals on DVD. They want you to subscribe to their streamer. This’ll happen on a bigger scale in 2025, when the dust settles on WarnerMedia’s merger with Discovery, Warner’s contract with Sky expires and HBO Max launches.

It's made by CBS rather than Disney, so it won't necessarily be that'll never surface on a broadcast channel in the UK, especially since ViacomCBS own Channel 5 and 5USA has shown it for a long time. I think the newest season they've shown is S17. You may just need to be patient. Catch-up on VM for 5USA is HD, so long as you use VM-hosted catch-up rather than My5 App, so there's no picture quality loss.

TimeLord2018 28-12-2021 15:04

Re: Changes to Virgin TV (2021)

That show appears to be the exception Fox (Disney) had lifetime first run rights to NCIS so that appears to be why it's going Disney+ despite being owned by ViacomCBS, Sky have acquired Bull and the final season of NCIS:New Orleans from ViacomCBS.

Sky i believe acquired The Rookie in Germany from EOne when Fox over there closed at the end of September.

If only that was the only example, Hugh. Look at all the TV channels that have closed in the last year with the associated programmes migrated to streamers.

Added to that, most originals are being shown on the streamers these days. TV channels are still accessible through Freeview and Now TV.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Virgin and Sky went the route of TalkTalk and BT in 10 years and becoming content aggregators. Freeview/Freesat channels via the Internet, with premium content like sports, movies and general entertainment going streaming-only.

Precisely. Everything is now clearly pointing to that happening.

You'll always pay for Premium content, no matter how it's delivered.

The lowest TV packages from VM and Sky are probably just glorified Freeview but with a box that allows recording/add skipping.
Quite expensive over an 18 month contract considering the price of a 3rd party freeview recorder that will do the same.

What would happen if (bloody big if) freeview gained the contract for major sports and 'new' movies . . . it sure wouldn't be free, but would still be sent over 'normal' channels, not streamed.

You could then still pay out for your 'streamed' Netflix, Amazon, Britbox etc on top . .

Nice idea, unfortunately nobody is going to pay hundreds of millions for sports rights and give them away on Freeview (how would they recover that money?) - if they did I would be forever grateful.

The best we can hope for is that the greedy sports such as EPL gave rights to 1 game a round to terrestrial channels - however again very unlikely to happen.

I didn't say it would be free on freeview, but that it wouldn't be free (premium channel) yet not streamed :p:

but of course, it won't happen . . just as the greedy football authorities (and SKY) will never relinquish their grasp on anything that says "sod the fans" ;)

Not sure why you pick on Sky - BT Sports and Amazon Prime both have EPL rights alongside Sky, also i am sure you are well aware that all Premiership and European Cup Rugby Union is on BT along with all Australian based Cricket (Ashes tests and Big Bash League) and N Zealand based cricket (Tests and T20 league).

Sky have less and less overseas sports rights - getting to the stage where if I need to save money I would keep BT Sports and ditch Sky Sports.

Anyway it is the football authorities that are so greedy they won't take a cut in revenue by insisting one of the main EPL packages is on Terrestrial TV.

There are plans for talks for something like that with SKY.

Last deal I know of was signed in last 2019 (some channels was given new EPG numbers in January 2020 with the launch of MTV Classic).

So I think we may see 5 USA HD and 5 STAR HD within the next 13months. (They are on Sky Glass right now).

As I said earlier, 5USA Catch-up is HD, so long as you use VM's servers rather than the My5 App.

Indeed, and it is such a shame.

There used to be an excellent local channel in Manchester called Channel M which did local television properly but even that didn't survive. I guess people feel they don't need local TV and that regional TV is good enough for them.

That said, if the quality is poor then people aren't going to watch it anyway and I have to be honest and say I've never watched the local channel since it first went on air, and one reason is because it is not on Virgin Media.

As such, I would have thought they should be streamed not on linear channels - especially given the predicted demise of linear TV;)

In the US, Paramount+ are using Pluto TV’s infrastructure to showcase the best of its content. Maybe linear TV has found a new lease of life, but within a streaming service.

The channel is called Paramount+ picks and they also have a Showtime selects channel , there will be Showtime section on Paramount+ in the UK aswell , although I suspect new Showtime dramas will be listed under the Paramount+ exclusives section instead.

Everything I've watched in the last few years that was originally made in HD and was in the 5 Channel Folders has been HD. So long as it's available on VM's Catch-up servers I'd be extremely confident that this would be too. The My5 App wasn't Full HD last time I used it, so you need to go in via VM's On-Demand system.

Chicago PD was in HD on Catch Up when 5USA used to air it , so was Justified.

Same goes for anything from 5Star like their 2nd run rights to Departure.

Re: Changes to Virgin TV (2021)

He’s posted in the Hogmanay thread. The more likely reason is he’s recognised that as it’s Virgin there’s nothing coming soon. ;)
