They should just have a Sky Reality channel and put all the crap on there.

I've had V6 boxes for 2 1/2 years and have been asking that question from day 1.

When sold Virgin, I was told by the rep that a bigger disk (2Tb or 4Tb) would be 'coming soon' - still waiting!

If you think HD fills the disk try recording programs in UHD.

I believe one of the updates, a while back, disabled the non-Live tuners on original VM Tivos to speed up their performance, so now only V6 boxes have the the ability for all their tuners.

I often make sure the other 5 tuners are for channels I may want to rewind if I have nothing scheduled to record.

How do you do that?

Have used the current channel re-wind several times - very useful.

You press Info (i) button when the screen shows nothing but the channel. On the left side of the info box that appears there are 5 option icons. Each time you press down arrow it changes the selected option and the contents in the main part of the box. The bottom option is the tuners, the icon looks like 3 stacked dishes.

Press down arrow button until you highlight the bottom option for the tuners. It will then display the channels and current programme name for the the 5 tuners you aren't watching. Press right arrow to highlight top tuner, press down from there to select the other 4 tuners. Once you have decided when tuner you want to change press OK button. The screen will now show that channel.

Change channel as per normal by typing channel number. Then repeat this process for every tuner you want to set. You then go on watching whatever one of the 6 tuners you feel like, knowing that you can go to any of the 6 channels and rewind them if you want to.

Unless a recording kicks in. If the recording isn't from one of channels the tuner is on the box will select one of the 5 you aren't watching to use for the recording, and you can be sure which one. And if you put the box into standby it loses the buffer, though it will awake in the same channels unless the box has been rebooted for any reason, in which case it shows VM previews on them. So this isn't foolproof, but it can be handy.

Virgin Media statement from the Community Forum News Release
https://community.virginmedia.com/t5...r/ba-p/4070894

Quote:

You may have noticed a message on your TV screen informing you of upcoming changes to some of our TV channels. Read on for more information.

On Thursday 26th September 2019, we’ll be removing the standard definition (SD) versions of some of our channels. From this date, the following channels are going to be removed:-

TLC SD (167)
Quest SD (172)
Discovery Channel SD (250)
Animal Planet SD (256)
Eurosport 1 SD (523)
Eurosport 2 SD (524)
These channels will be replaced by the high definition (HD) version which means you won’t miss out on any of your favourite shows. If you currently enjoy the HD version of these channels, these will be changing slightly at the same time:

TLC HD (167 - currently 168)
Quest HD (172 - currently 217)
Discovery Channel HD (250 - currently 251)
Animal Planet HD (256 - currently 257)
Eurosport 1 HD (521)
Eurosport 2 HD (522)
In certain cases, the SD and HD channels are currently included within separate TV packages (e.g. TLC SD is currently included in the Mix TV package, whereas TLC HD is available in the Full House TV package). Where this is the case, the HD channel will replace the SD channel in the current package. This means you'll still continue to enjoy all the great programming on that channel after the change

Good spot re: Home And Health+1. I rarely notice that part on DBR. That's the number the main H&H channel is on, so that must be moving up. I'd imagine they are finally filling in that gap between Discovery and Animal Planet. Maybe they are demoting the +1s and promoting the main channels they own which are further down?

Is there a Turbo+1? If it doesn't exist I wouldn't be surprised if they axed Shed to create it.

Discovery has got the following brands in the Factual & Lifestyle:

-Discovery HD
-Animal Planet
-Discovery Science
-Discovery Turbo
-Discovery History
-Home
-Home & Health
-Discovery Shed

-Travel Channel

But on Sky the Discovery brands are as followed:
-Discovery Channel
-Food Network
-Home
-Discovery Turbo
-Animal Planet
-Discovery Science
-Discovery Home & Health
-Travel Channel
-Discovery Shed

Given 253, 254 and 255 have been empty for a while and there will be even more gaps in 250s when the HD switches/SD closures occur, as I was suggesting earlier I'd say there is a decent chance main versions of Discovery-owned channels Home, Food Network, Home & Health, Shed and the like further down would jump much further up, leaving the +1s all moved to fill the 280s.

The Sky/Comcast number changes coming up have demoted the +1s, so it's more likely now that this could happen than before these Sky/Comcast changes were known.

JJ20X on ForumBox has found the information screens for the channel number changes. https://www.forumbox.co.uk/forum/thr...ork/?pageNo=12

Though they've clearly made a mistake, as there's a Good Food logo instead of a Food Network one, and Animal Planet HD is mentioned twice on two different numbers, so I've corrected channel name below, and I assumed the lower Animal Planet HD was the correct one.

Food Network 278
Home 279
Home & Health 280
Discovery Shed 281
Travel Channel 282
Home +1 283
Home & Health +1 284

Discovery HD 250
Animal Planet HD 251
Discovery Science 252
Discovery Turbo 256
Discovery History 257
Discovery +1 258
Animal Planet +1 259
Discovery History +1 261

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2019)

One little side show that's not been mentioned, is the slight devaluation in Full-House/XL with HD channels being dropped down to lower packages.

But I guess the new TV strategy is for genre-based bundles containing all the channels, than the "bit of everything" as in the past.

There are times it's good to have the choice of an SD channel (being away from home for weeks at a time etc), but on the whole this is an extremely welcome move.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2019)

I just looked, and all the HD moves have been made on the EPG successfully. It makes sense they didn't do all the other moves as they would be confusing doing all at once, plus some would have been former HD postions where they need to put a channel move slate.

---------- Post added at 08:59 ---------- Previous post was at 08:41 ----------

The logic of the moves seems to be, once finished, that in each of the categories, Entertainment, Factual, Lifestyle the order is HD channels top, then the channels in that category ordered by their main channels ratings, then repeat that order for any +1s available.

I compared the order with the August TV ratings (on BARB website) and it's pretty much going to reflect them within each category.

The channel moves have obviously been within the channel numbers that the broadcaster is already allocated, presumably so they don't offend the other broadcasters.

---------- Post added at 09:17 ---------- Previous post was at 08:59 ----------

I looked closer and all the HD channels that swapped are running on both their new numbers and their old numbers.

I'd bet that's because they were alerted to the errors on the channel information slates that were spotted last night, but it was too late to fix them in time.

Only the Eurosport changes have went completely successfully, probably partially because the HD versions were in the better EPG positions already.

The other obvious missing Sky/Comcast one is CNBC HD. If that happens it's likely to be a straight swap out. News/business channels tend to close their SD versions e.g. Bloomberg, NHK, France24 (both French & English versions).

I've found what I think is that answer. It's the differing usage of certain terminology.

The term in this case beign "information slate".

To me an "information slate", in digital cable TV context, is a full screen static image that replaces the broadcast channel.

However others are using it for the on-screen information that you press Clear to remove.

I would call those latter things pop-up overlays.

I came to the conclusion of the differing usage as I went to 602 and saw a pop-up overlay telling me Sky News (SD) would be moving to 603, and concluded this was what others were seeing but calling a different name.

Thanks for the detailed explanation - could be very useful in the future.

UHD broadcasts of football on BT take between 4 and 5 times the disk space compared to the equivalent HD version.

Maybe sport in UHD takes more space or maybe BT UHD is a better quality.

So where exactly is Sky Crime going to be? What about the other channel changes?

Then, on Tuesday 1 October, there’s the launch of a brand new channel, Sky Crime (CH 135 (HD)/136). You can read more about the home of the very best US true crime stories here.
On the same date, Mix and Fun customers will find five new music channels on their service: MTV Hits (CH 312), MTV Base (CH 313), Club MTV (CH 314), MTV Rocks (CH 315) and VH1 (CH 316).

Plus, some of your favourite channels will then be moving to make them easier to find. There are new homes for the likes of Universal TV, Sky Arts, SYFY, Food Network, Discovery HD, Animal Planet HD and many more. Consult your Channel Guide below for the full list!
The channel guide included in the link is going to be out of date in a few days time.

Thanks for that nomadking.

Virgin Media must have come to a new agreement with Viacom if they are moving so many of their channels.

Mix and Fun are slowly turning into XL/oldFullHouse (and I mean XL, not Maxit, because of they have Pay kids channels).

---------- Post added at 09:17 ---------- Previous post was at 09:11 ----------

I've noticed that Fun already had 3 of those 5 MTV channels mentioned, so VM worded that poorly.

I don't tend to record the football as I always manage to stumble across the score lol, but I do record the F1. Be interesting to see if Sky UHD takes up more/less space than BT UHD.

The picture quality on BT UHD is very good though, lovely and clear.

Not unless either the old Disney or old Fox deal was due to expire soon. The closure was one all platforms, it won't come into it.

Both Discovery and Sky are moving their +1s below their main channels from tomorrow, within their existing channel numbers and their respective categories i.e. the Discovery-owned channel moves are to numbers Discovery-owned channels are already on currently, and Sky to Sky allocated numbers.

The trend for having the +1 directly below the main version is clearly at an end.

I was wondering the same re: MTV channels. Plus MTV Classic is missing from VM I think, so maybe that added, and C5 and Paramount swapping out for their HD versions as there are no advertising regions to deal with, and they are on the same package tiers anyway.

If the Discovery strategy is followed again the HD swaps will happen first.

I think there is at least one Nick channel in HD missing too, so maybe that is a possible arrival too.

All the following Viacom is not broadcasting on Virgin Media UK right now.

Nick Jr. HD
Nick Jr. +1
Comedy Central Extra +1
5Spike +1
MTV CLASSIC (Broadcasts in Virgin Media Ireland areas right now).
MTV MUSIC +1

207 is a +1.

---------- Post added at 09:23 ---------- Previous post was at 08:29 ----------

I've been looking through my house's Favourites, and, as I suspected, the renumbering has make very little difference. Since we moved from Tivo to a V6, a while back now, roughly coincided with us pruning the +1s away so today's changes only made minor difference. Mostly it has grouped genres into logically similar genre groupings a little better, mostly in the Discovery part of the lifestyle category.

So although it looks big and complicated, today did very little. Though it needed done in my opinion.

I think the HD swaps from last week will change our viewing habits more as we didn't watch too much Discovery (250) or Animal Planet and previously waited for Discovery shows to appear on Quest HD. Certain channel's programming benefits more from HD than others. Not that that stops us watching SD, even genres that benefit from it, as likes of LoveNature SD gets regular viewing.

Well 5 MTV channels got moved down onto Mix tier and 2 to Fun tier on the 1st October when all the number changes happened.

I don't think that sort of action could have been done without some agreement being made. It's just not been made public.

Most agreements don't get made public unless they can't come to an agreement. It's usually just the Sky renewal that regularly gets announced.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2019)

I suspect Arts remains high in the guide is because they want Sky branded channels to remain prominent. And it's a bit of a prestige channel, they want to be seen "Supporting the Arts".

Given Sky Crime is new they won't know for sure how popular it will be so they aren't going to give it too good a slot. Especially as other true crime genre channels have had mixed fortunes.

Sky Two is supposedly the channel that Sky Comedy will be replacing early next year, so they probably decided to have it the lowest of their Pay channels (not including +1s). All their Pay channels got moved above their Free To Air channels despite Challenge and Pick being their 3rd and top rated entertainment channels respectively (Sky1 is 2nd and Witness is 4th). I'm using the August BARB ratings for that, they probably fluctuate positions a bit.

Sky Arts is now much closer to its HD channel than it was, the HD channel moved up about 50 numbers. And those who have the HD version in their package can always use the "Press Blue To Watch In HD".

If Sky Crime is a flop I can see Sky Comedy being switched into that slot. There aren't any Weekly ratings for Sky Crime on the BARB website at the time I type this.

Yet still no MTV Classic on Virgin Media in the UK.

VH1 still hasn't been moved to the Entertainment genre either.

Paramount Network continues in SD on 188 when every customer can view Paramount Network HD on 187.

There was a delay between the Sky deal being announced and any obvious change too. The EPG changes they put on hold until Sky Crime was due to launch.

We don't know when the Discovery changes were agreed. Quest was in a similar position to Paramount regards HD version being available to all.

Only Sky agreements seem to get press releases every time they are agreed/renewed.

We don't know when the Discovery changes were agreed. Quest was in a similar position to Paramount regards HD version being available to all.

Only Sky agreements seem to get press releases every time they are agreed/renewed.

Base on Discovery moves this past week we feel if Viacom have ask Virgin Media to move their channels it may move as followed:

105. Channel 5 HD
132. Comedy Central HD
133. Comedy Central Extra
134. MTV HD
150. Channel 5 +1
151. 5 USA

184. Comedy Central Extra +1
185. MTV +1

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2019)

Certainly plausible given the recent changes by other broadcasters. I think it will be somewhere between what happened with Sky and what happened with Discovery. Mainly because the talks obviously didn't go particularly well because that Viacom website surfaced.

I think Channel 5 and Paramount will go HD-only, as the HD versions are available on the same packs as the SD ones, but the others will be HD/SD with a demotion of +1s like Sky. Also like Sky, I don't think any of the missing channels will arrive, so no missing +1s or MTV Classic.

Forum Box says an previously flagged as "Movies" has been change to "Lifestyle".

The only Lifestyle Channels we are missing is Discovery Turbo +1 or Food Network +1.

Early signs of new channels launches?

I think you misunderstood MB, JJ20X was talking about channel information slates, ones used to say a channel has moved. Quite a few have moved recently. The slates need to appear in the correct EPG categories in the places vacated by the old channels, which is what JJ20X said.

Maybe so - just thinking out loud.

We still can't work out why Discovery did NOT ask Virgin to move Really to use the slot for TLC HD or Quest HD! Unless UKTV own the Channel number.

Also WWE fans - WWE Hell in the Cell will tonight cost up to £15.95.

SD - £14.95
HD - £15.95.

It probably would’ve happened if the Viacom website hadn’t gone public like cheekyangus said, but only time will tell.

Actually I was suggesting VM would've wanted what MB was suggesting, and Viacom didn't.

I think some broadcasters don't want the HD replacing the SD as they want two fees by being in two packages. This reasoning might be why Sky didn't do it.

Or £9.99p/m via wwe network. No brainer really for WWE fans.

Yes, good news indeed. Quite a bit of extra content as well. Further information on the deal is here:

Just as one thought behind closed doors they were always going to come to a amicable agreement sooner rather then later.

Here's the VM press release re: Viacom.

Re: The 3rd Party "channels" via My5. Given several of these, and their catch-up content, are already available via VM I'm surprised VM are mentioning these. Surely they come under separate deals for those channels already.

Things are changing, CA. VM is to be the 'super aggregator' of content, so there are bound to be some duplications.

As an example, if you search on Amazon, you will see coming up shows on Netflix as well. This is what people want - everything in one place.

I understand that. I'm just wondering how willing the different broadcasters are to it.

For example, Virgin Media still provides the catch-up for ITV2/3/4/Be/CITV in Scotland.

In theory ITV could make a Scotland specific Hub app for these, and STV could reciprocate and have a rUK version of their Player app so rUK could get their other content e.g. Hopster.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2019)

The addition of the My5 app is very welcome with Virgin Media customers gaining access to new content from a selection of providers, as well as the full Catch Up range for the first time.

No mention of MTV Classic, but fingers crossed it will be added.

In terms of major Catch Up apps, now all we need is All4.

As I said above, Scotland doesn't have ITV Hub, so the ITV spin-off channel's content may not be fully represented. I've no idea if the content VM hosts on their catch-up systems here is exactly the same as the app.

The STV Player would be more appropriate for Scotland.

It would be good if they could add ITV Hub+ as well.
