I heard ages ago that VM were in carriage negotiations with Arte.

When I posted it on here many thought that it would be in the form of an app that some Smart TV's have.

I remember someone posting a link that said that Arte had been given a grant to increase their reach.

Even if relatively few are interested in this channel, it's probably inexpensive and increases the count of 4K channels available (of which there aren't many to start with).

My bet

On demand 4K content e.g. drama/serials/events due to resent tie ups with All3Media and Endemol Shine

and perhaps a couple of channels from the Discovery Deal.

Discovery 4K

Eurosport 4K

:D

Not sure where this optimism is coming from, must be the weather and Olympic feel good effect,

There is currently only one UK based 4K channel and that is BT, Sky 4K isn't actually a channel, it is just currently extra content accessible when something in 4K is available... ie it doesn't have an EPG slot.

I reckon Discovery will be hot on this. As an earlier poster said there is only one full time 4K channel at the moment but I think in the next 2 years we are going to see quite a few pop up.

Eurosport will certainly have prime content to show with Winter & Summer Olympics and all the Tennis Grand Slams.

I have a feeling they are going to challenge the Sports Channel model. Rather than Sky Sports and BT Sport producing premium channels with mostly exclusive content I see Eurosport having a different model.

Keep the core sport offering on their widely distributed subscription channels with some exclusive rights put most shared with FTA. The focus of Eurosport being marketing their premium add ons such as multi-screen via Eurosport Player and 4K.

So one day you may have the core Olympic events on the BBC but have the option to pay extra if you want the premium Olympic experience of it in 4K and multi-screen access for all events. In that way I can see them also bidding for non exclusive rights to other sports such as the Fifa World Cup etc.. I'm sure this is partly behind their strategy for getting their foot in the door with Wimbledon.

Maybe I'm over thinking it. Slow day at work :p:

BT show even less 4K content , the majority of the time there's nothing on channel or not.

Can you see it being exclusive ? with such a small potential audience on VM personally I can't see it being worth it for both parties.

Otherwise I agree these channels may launch in 4K at some stage however I'd imagine on multiple platforms.

Your guess is as good as mine.

To speculate, it might be a little like the Netfllix model but with a discount for Virgin Media XL customers???

You subscribe to Eurosport via the web but you can access your account seamlessly via your Tivo / TV anywhere. Maybe with a special rate for Virgin Media customers on certain packages.

Interesting thoughts. Question is whether LGI's relationship with Discovery Group is sufficient to ensure that VM will get all possible Eurosport content or whether Eurosport will keep it to its Eurosport app. People say the two have a strong connection and Malone has stakes in both companies, but they do have separate sets of shareholders to satisfy.

Maybe the discounted Eurosport app suggestion is the way forward for Eurosport which may give up its channel spots eventually and become app-only.

Thanks for posting this.

Whilst these channels are a welcome addition, I fear that this is too little too late. People have been asking for these outstanding movie channels for years and even now the set is incomplete.

The ongoing problems with the TiVo & the cheek to ask for more money for it from November is the last straw for me & many others according to various forums.

I'm now looking at other providers, having been one of their first digital customers.

Dumping the tv is a no brainer, but it's the broadband that's more tricky. As I said on the other thread, I am waiting for the info about new prices, new tivo and broadband speed upgrades (if they happen) before making a decision.

Problem is with bundling, you are pretty much tied into one company or another. All companies make their standalone products outside the bundles too expensive and this prevents customers changing suppliers. Not many people can afford tv from one company, take broadband from another and telephone from somewhere else.

Just to be clear and I know some here disagree, but the City don't.... John Malone has more than just a stake, he controls Discovery. They have different kinds of shares in America and he holds a kind that gives him greater voting control than the actual stake he has.

Discovery is his. Eurosport is his. VM is his. Liberty (both of them) are his. QVC is his and perhaps soon he'll add Lionsgate and/or Scripps/AMC to that as well.

I'm sure I read somewhere that this is actualy the third price increase during this year.

Perhaps they will introduce quarterly price increases next year!

Much as I dislike Sky, they seem to have very good retention deals eg 50% off TV.

I would love to keep the TiVo, but with the best will in the world I can't carry on like this. Watching TV should be a relaxing pleasure, not a frustrating and annoying chore.

As others have said, when people come round they look at you like you're stupid for putting up with it- it's embarrasssing. Even my cleaner has commented!

Does the latest Sky STB (not bothered for Sky Q) have the equivalent of Wishlists and/or Suggestions?

Does anyone know of any other boxes that have these features?

Yes, this does seem to be the case.

Malone is also well known for 'sweating his assets'. He gets richer whilst his customers stare at purple circles & black screens with a totally useless EPG*.

* By this I mean it has updated nearly a week late for some channels- tough luck for those who have already set off for the Bank Holiday. Also, they appear to have made no effort to deal with the poor quality meta data.

I read last night that the quality went down after they changed suppliers, no doubt it was simply because it was cheaper for themselves.

For TiVo to work properly it's essential that it has good quality meta data on the EPG.

I'm surprised that all this hasn't prompted TiVo to take action against VM for bringing their brand into disrepute.

Thanks PB. It's a shame if they have this feature copyrighted as it means that I would probably have to search for things, but it's probably still quicker than trying to use the TiVo overall.

What I don't understand is why they are adding things to a box that cannot cope with what it has already, they could add Sky Atlantic tomorrow, but what would be the point if all customers get to see is a blank screen or a spinning circle :(

Exactly OB, like myself it seems that, even as a long standing supporter of VM, you too have had enough.

To actually increase the price of this rubbish appears to be akin to some bizarre attempt to finally kill off their TV side of the business.

As noted earlier, however, to get the best deals one usually has to take all services from one provider. This could also lose them BB & phone customers and it will serve them right.

Perhaps ALL Virgin Media customers should email or write to Virgin and protest at the poor service and price increases? MAYBE then they'll realise the strength of discontent amongst their customers.

That's not always the case if you take advantage of the various offers around now they are all competing and you don't mind switching around. I had a VM bundle (TV, BB and phone) for about 9 years but then got fed up of the price rises and cancelled TV last year.

Moved to Sky for TV and kept BB and phone with VM and got more for less. Since went up after initial 12 month Sky deal ended but then negotiated 50% off for a further 12 months. For my needs, the separates are much cheaper than VM can offer me as a bundle.

Due to get BT fibre in my area in next couple of months so probably gonna dump VM altogether and get fibre from either BT or Sky once available.

Due to the competition, it's currently a great time to get deals if you shop around and you don't always have to bundle services from one provider either.

With VM it works out cheaper to take a landline as well as BB, even if you don't use it (though you could just use it for the free weekend calls).

However, don't you get free broadband with Sky if you take the landline? In which case it makes sense to dump VM altogether.

I won't tolerate their TV service any longer, aren't bothered about a landline, so the only product of interest is BB- but Sky are offering it for free. It may not be as fast, but will be more than adequate for my needs at home.

Don't blame you Richard. VM seem to have lost interest in their TV side these last couple of years and concentrated on broadband.

I'll be interested to see the pricing and bundles when they launch the new V6 TiVo. I also feel they need a killer USP on the V6 as they will have arrived late to the party and need something that BT or Sky don't have to retain/attract customers.

Do you pay VM for BB as the free Sky BB is too slow for your needs?

VM did lose interest in their TV side and they have acknowledged this. The new box at the end of the year, the new Tivo software, additions like Universal HD, Hayu, Sony channels, UKTV on-demand, All3 Media and other content deals show they're serious about TV.

Bad news: Content and hardware costs are rising due to a weaker £ (not predicted) and footy (a known) so expect to see other providers do similar.
Good news: We have a strong new entrant in broadband in the form of Vodafone with some good deals. Up to 76Mb fibre broadband for just £28pm including line rental is a cracking deal. https://www.vodafone.co.uk/packages

I don't get that, I STILL (several weeks on) get the "Hear Ye! Hear Ye! We've made Virgin TV service new and improved with fewer menus". Yeah, Hear You this, thanks for taking away the Blue button that I used everyday and for making Tivo much slower and more convoluted and thanks for the constant C501 errors too, now I can't access MyShows and play my recordings and thanks for one more price hike before I say, "SEE YAA!" once and for all.

Yep. It's just sheer laziness in not checking things properly. There should have been at least a few people check that the details were correct before that went live. But companies today are very slapstick in general.

The only change due for broadband kit is that the Hub 3.0 colour is changing from white to black, once the existing white ones run out. From a hardware perspective they are both exactly the same.

There is no option to choose a colour or swap from one to the other.

Well I raised the price hike issue with a store manager and he says we can now only allow one price hike a year and we had ours on XL in February and a 2nd one in November is unethical

Which store manager and why are two price rises 'unethical'?

If Virgin have to pay more (eg for content) then they have to pass that on in a price rise. It's up to every one of us to ensure that we get value for money. If it doesn't work out, you can change your package, change your provider, go for a mix of providers or make do with Freeview.

The choice is ours.

Indeed people have a choice and as Stephen has done they have made that choice on what they think is best for them and their family in terms of value.

Is that an auto-correct issue and your post should actually say "Amazon Prime TV app on its way to VM customers?" ;)

After VMs recent behaviour i think it's safe to say you can forget about vm ever having AMC/AMCHD.

They are launching an app that was popular about 18 months ago, no one plays it anymore, what is there to be positive about?
TBH it probably took VM 18 months to negotiate for it, most other platforms had it within weeks.

I think that this means only in the sense that Angry Birds is coming around the same time as the price rises ;)
