Sorry den, I thought that was obvious to anyone. Security is something as I take as a matter of course and looking back I can honestly say I have never had any malware, virus or rootkit on any of my PC's/laptops since perhaps 2004 (that's when I took the time to learn and take note) and had never used a PC before 2001.

I swear by ESET Smart Security. with the firewall set as interactive. It's a bit of a pain in the beginning as as every attempted connection in or out is flagged until you allow it. Even your browser of choice has to be given permission but you can set it to always allow, same with windows updates and any software you have with auto-updates etc, but once you tell the firewall to always allow it will never ask you again.

Back that up with Malwarebytes and Spybot Search and Destroy and you have a pretty good security system. Nothing is ever 100% though and you should always be aware of the links you're clicking on.

problem 1 on Reboot it failed on either net conection Failed fress f1 continue
this carried on for a while (hour at least) and installed .
problem 2 all settings had been reset power setting and most others search , sound, Nagging message about using EDGE Browser. took a while to reinstall Firefox which had been removed.

24 hours Later FIREFOX Stopped working reinstall again nagging message Edge
All saved Links settings on firefox had been removed. Sound again not working
SEARCH reset again to bing

The update installed on Oct 11 (KB4041676) went in first time but seems to have developed a strange fault. When the PC starts it insists that a restart is wanted but when you click on the message it vanishes and no restart is wanted. It doesn't seem to cause any problems.

After the update last night I now found that edge has hidden most of my favorites. There only appears to be one entry in each folder.

Edited about 20 mins later. I have now switched back to chrome and am using all my favorites now. Chrome also now seems to work properly at least for the moment.

Attempted to install this morning. Downloaded ok, went through long, drawn out installation process, restarting several times. Then flagged up, ‘Restoring your previous version of Windows’.

A check in control panel and it says a restart is needed to finish install but doing a restart has no effect , system is still on V:1703.

This time I was able to see the BSOD, it had ‘page fault in non paged area’ it then attempted to retrieve the installation before once again restoring previous version of Windows.:(

Well that was a bloody marathon.:(

First of all I ran chkdsk/f/r , that froze at 12% for at least an hour but I left it running as previous reading had suggested that would happen. Went for a game of squash and got back a couple of hours later to find it had completed.

Went to Updates and selected restart again.

It has taken nearly three hours but this time the update completed without issues.:)

Windows 10's "Controlled Folder Access" Anti-Ransomware Feature Is Now Live
https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/new...e-is-now-live/

Quote:

With the release of Windows 10 Fall Creators Update last week, the "Controlled Folder Access" that Microsoft touted in June is now live for millions of users.

As the name hints, the Controlled Folder Access feature allows users to control who can access certain folders.

The feature works on a "block everything by default" philosophy, which means that on a theoretical level, it would be able to prevent ransomware when it tries to access and encrypt files stored in those folders.

One annoying problem with this update here is when you drag a window to the edge of the screen so it fills 50%, if you then drag it back it doesn't pop back into its original size, very annoying and i hope they fix it soon.

Edit

Just tried it again and it now appears to be working but it sure wasn't a few hours ago.

Trying to update the laptop. its now on its second attempt to install the update from earlier October. At the least the PC has settled and doesn't complain about running two copies of Outlook which it now has developed a habit of sometimes doing. Its even making think that Linux could be better. I would consider Apple apart from the extortionate price you have to pay.

This really must take the award for most stupid idea ever. What were Microsoft thinking of when they introduced the update system?

If you use a third party anti-virus and / or firewall check that Windows has not disabled it in preference to it's own essentials stuff. The last W7 update did that.

Windows live Mail has been discontinued so if you are using this still for your email i would recommend moving to something else for your email client as this probably won't get security updates.

If you don't use Windows Live Mail then uninstall it.

Another vote for Thunderbird and it will import all your existing mail and settings.

If there's no other way you might have to venture where angels fear to tread: The registry.

Another possibility is to roll back to a previous restore point where you know the problem wasn't happening.

WOW! 3 days left in the month and it takes an official announcement to name the day.

Updates are never pushed out Sat or Sun. Monday was the only day left FFS otherwise it would be a May update.

denphone: I suggest going for a long walk whilst waiting. lol
90min from download to first reboot, taking a further 45min to enable me to log on.
[Volunteer required to update my wife's identical laptop, she uses it most of the day only shutting off at bedtime!] lol

Updated last night and immediately had some problems with the language settings.

Had to rollback to the previous version to fix it, so am trying again.

Did mine last night, was late so after first reboot I switched off the screen and went to bed.
Woke to a ‘ something went wrong ‘ message this morning. OOBESETTINGSMULTIPAGE.

It was just the multiple permissions screen, retried it and all’s well.:)

Reinstalled and exactly the same thing.

Not a big issue, just means I get the 'ENG' language option on the taskbar.

Also seem to be missing tray icons for my Sound driver and for a Dell display options program (PremierColor)

Just finished the update on my wife's laptop, a couple of minor glitches since the Homegroup has been removed.

My main desktop PC is connected to the router via ethernet, printer via usb to same PC.

I can still print from the laptop perfectly and if I open Network in File Explorer on the main PC I can see her laptop and access all the shared folders etc.

However if I open Network on the laptop I cannot see the main PC but for some strange reason can see the Media Device on that PC.

Also getting a weird pop up when rebooting, the spelling of 'Informaiton' is a bit strange on this????

i'd run malware bytes, spybot etc to see if something is not right, could be a typo in some legitmate free software or something else.

Malwarebytes Premium is normally installed on both PC’s but for some reason ( apparently a known occurrence ) Malwarebytes had vanished from her laptop. I reinstalled it and did a full scan before I did the Win 10 update. That pop up has stopped since I removed all of those spurious games.

Not here yet - most updates (cumulative) fail with 0x800706be so I have to download the file and apply manually. This works. Will try some fixes again while there are no pending updates.

Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion

Bit of a disaster this morning, the main desktop PC is running fine but the laptop has more or less frozen.

Takes forever to boot up then nothing will run correctly, trying to open any program takes several minutes or longer. Tried to open Task Manager to see if there was anything in there, that took ages to open but when it eventually did there was nothing obviously maxing out the CPU.:(

I tried to run Malwarebytes but that stalled for five minutes checking for updates before I cancelled it.

Is it possible to roll back this update?

mmm I'm still not seeing any compelling reason to try Win 10 at this point. Still seems to be a crock

Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion

What an absolute PITA.

Eventually got the laptop working correctly again.

After waiting about ten minutes I finally got the Event Viewer to load and it eventually displayed the error logs. Lots of DCOM 10010 and 10016 errors reported.

Did a scan with SeaTools for Windows which was clean.

Finally bit the bullet and using the Update and Security/Recovery options rolled the PC back to the previous version of Windows and it is now back to normal.

You can't stay there forever, i don't recommend it anyway, give it a while and try again after waiting to see if others have a similar problem.

---------- Post added at 19:25 ---------- Previous post was at 19:18 ----------

Strange problem for my desktop since updating Windows 10.

Powering off from the start menu shuts the PC down like normal but when i try and start it again by pressing the power button nothing happens, so i have to switch the power supply switch off on the back for 30 seconds to make the power button work again.

If i power it down by pressing the power button i can then start it again by pressing the power button, i don't use sleep or hibernation so i am well confused....

---------- Post added at 20:23 ---------- Previous post was at 19:25 ----------

So after it not working 20 odd times from my testing, i put it into sleep mode and since then shutting it down has worked several times on the trot, so not sure if i still have an issue or not.

The annoying thing is my desktop is over two years old but we have only had this laptop six months.

The Win 10 on my desktop was an upgrade from Win 7 Pro but the laptop came with Win 10 pre installed.:(

I would never ever abandon the PC like that during an installation, this update asks you questions about privacy and things you need to click during the install, so maybe you just need to give it another go and wait for it?

I would advise having an upto date system restore point incase it goes tits up properly, not sure if it would let you use it though with such a huge update, also try disabling antivirus before updating.

iadom 02-05-2018 22:39

Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion

That was the desktop PC which has been fine, the privacy questions waited for me in the morning before second restart. :)

The PC that has given all the problems was a different one that I sat with throughout the install the day after. ;)

So, the one I left to it's own devices is fine, the one I monitored all the way through has failed miserably.

installed today on this and my Laptop no Problems,
Had to answer the 20 Questions bit (no phone a friend) answered NO to all but it ignored that so went into Settings and checked them.
Homegroup removed ? eh WHY? This update complete waste of time.

iadom 10-05-2018 17:34

Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion

I did contact the suppliers of the laptop ( Novatech ) and they confirmed they had received several reports of similar problems to mine with the 1803 update.

Only thing they could suggest is a full, clean install of Windows or allow the install to go ahead then use the reset Windows function in the update.

Potentially a complete loss of data so full backup needed before proceeding.

Laptop is running fine as it is so will leave it alone for now.

You're not on your own there :D

Currently using win 7, I haven't had updates enabled on any of my machines since win 98.

Exactly, if they'd concentrated on updating the oily bits instead of mucking about with the bodywork we'd all be much happier.

I've not really seen a difference between XP-7-8 and 10 other than windows 10 is a lot more complicated when it comes to using it's internals and not as user friendly as the rest
