Today, Virgin Media has unveiled a significant update to the UKs largest connected TV platform, with a new look on its way for our 2.3 million plus Virgin Media TiVo customers.

The visual style reflects our new brand identity but also introduces HTML 5, with a higher definition interface that paves the way for better access for app developers. For example, we’re working with Opera to bring its app store to TiVo – more details will follow once the rollout is complete.

Does anyone know if opera is good when comes to apps also would they have WWE network has a apps thanks

I'm struggling to find a comprehensive list of apps on Opera TV.

I did come across this article which is on RCN Tivo boxes, it was 7 months ago so you'd expect it to have grown by now.

I have some Opera TV apps on my Sony TV. I will have a look at them and report back. Here's a link though that explains a little more - looks like an HTML5 platform for App development

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2014) Vol. 3

link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smart_TV

A smart TV, sometimes referred to as connected TV or hybrid TV, (not to be confused with IPTV, Internet TV, or with Web TV) is a television set or set-top box with integrated Internet and Web 2.0 features, and is an example of technological convergence between computers and television sets and set-top boxes. Besides the traditional functions of television sets and set-top boxes provided through traditional broadcasting media, these devices can also provide online interactive media, Internet TV, over-the-top content, as well as on-demand streaming media, and home networking access.[1][2][3][4]

The software that runs smart TVs can be preloaded into the device, or updated or installed on demand via an app store or app marketplace, in a similar manner to how the Internet, Web widgets, and software applications (in this context commonly just referred to as "apps") are integrated in modern smartphones.[5][6][7][8][9]

Since it's a another way of saying smart tv guest sky box don't have this ability.

Its the confusion around the word connected , referring to OTT and streaming functionality I can see but actual boxes connected to the internet clearly its incorrect see here.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2014) Vol. 3

Had a quick look - Opera TV means dozens and dozens (possibly hundreds) of little apps, much like the TiVo people suggested we'd have but have had very few of thanks to the limitations of Flash. There are the movie trailer apps, radio apps, games apps (little ones, like Sudoku and other simple things) and lots of others. It's nothing to get particularly excited about but may develop into something work exploring on the TiVo.

I don't think they mean connected as in "to the internet", I think they mean to a proprietary network.

Maybe this is what she meant 100s of apps but it took a lot longer to write the software ready for implementing? Just a thought

You can get tunein on most android phones/tablets, windows 8 and also iphones/ipodtouch/ipads. It is well worth money as an app. For 69p my ipod touch is constanly connected to my Ruark/Vita Audio R4i and has been one of the best investments of my life to date. Whatever you are in the mood for, it can cater to it. You can listen to classic British comedy (Dads Army, Hancock's Half Hour, Just A Minute etc), contemporary comedy channels, stand up comedy channels, the wonderful Swiss Radio Classic,British and American thrillers, old school plays, old school horror shows (Nightfall being very effective). You also have the option to record live broadcasts, I currently have a TMS recording of a Viv Richards special saved. I can only recommend you get the app asap. It is wonderful.

Anyhoo, that is my advertizing for Tunein over and with. Back to the topic in hand. If/when we get the opera app, will we get the same apps as our American cousins, or will there be different license restrictions?

Just been informed that Viacom have approached VM to say that they want to reverse the previous owners decision and put 5*+1 back onto the network; they are also considering closing down 5+24.

Does anyone know what the viewing figures are for 5+24 compared to 5*+1?

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2014) Vol. 3

..... as I said the other day, I thought there might be a few changes once the Viacom buyout of CH5 was completed.

Both channels had a minimal 0.1% share of weekly viewing.

Thanks. I wonder why they would bother if they are both attracting a similar amount of viewers  Perhaps it's cheaper to broadcast a +1 channel so they will make more profit??

VM and truTV appear to have made up their differences as, since I last posted I was also told later in the evening to expect truTV very soon (not that I'll be watching from what I've heard about it!)

Well, it must be cheaper because it's just the same programmes repeated. The increased revenue from advertising makes it a viable proposition.

However, I would be surprised if 5+24 has many viewers at all as it doesn't appear to be advertised anywhere. I'm sure that most people don't know about it.

Seen no confirmed news on any of the missing UPC Ireland and Smallworld channels coming any time soon to Virgin Media.

But if Viacom is talking to Virgin Media over 5* +1 they also maybe talking about the missing MTV Channels as well for all we know.

Well, if they feed +1 channels by doing the professional version of winding live TV back one hour, I guess it's cheaper than paying for the equipment to show a seperate channel with different EPG listings.

To be honest though, I've found +24 to be very useful in dealing with recording clashes.

You never told us that you'll be appearing on the Horror Channel at 22:45 on Sat night!

He never mentioned any other Viacom channels, but that doesn't neccessarily mean anything Africa Channel will be moving EPG numbers in a bid to increase viewing figures which have not been as high as expected since starting on VM.

Well, it has its own YouView channel so maybe it will get a VM channel number too. I think it's called Extra as it will only be on when BT has too many live events on its regular channels - the rest of the time it will probably be a barker channel.

When Sky Sports 2 first launch way back in August 1994 it was only an Weekend channel.

New iOS TV Anywhere app now available.

Red on very dark purple/black Virgin Media "Infinity" logo on startup, but no branding elsewhere. Typical "flat" interface, mostly white text on purple background - quite legible.

Don't see any operational changes - just cosmetic. It's version 3.02, implying its a completely new version, so may be other changes "under the hood".

I think it all depends on what Premier League rights BT acquires - if these reduce in 2016/17 then BT is unlikely to increase subscriptions in 2015/16. And we don't know the precise terms of BT's three-year deal with VM; VM may well get access to the Champions League 2015/16 coverage for no extra cost to it. Unlikely but possible.

i'm actually quite confident we'll get the champions league for one year free in XL? VM have a contract with BT sport for 3 years in XL. Unless they create a new channel to shove champions league coverage on and charge VM customers access to that one channel on subscription? i can't see that happening as surely it'd be like sky sports 5 it justs part of the bundle VM have got a contract for??

I'm being optimistic for once instead of negative haha.

I guess it all depends whether they are likely to get more with individual VM subscriptions than with a wholesale deal in partnership with VM.

You let your hatred for all things Sky cloud your judgement on too many occasions , look at the facts

BT is paying £299 million a season over 3 years nearly double the previous contract

BT has shareholders just the same as BSKYB meaning they want to see maximim return on these rights

BT currently offers BT Sport free to VM XL customers or free to any customer taking its BB offering on either BT TV or the Sky Satellite platform

Can you realistically see no additional cost once the champions league contract kicks in ? I'm sure BT will look to increase revenue across all its viewers , I'm sure agreements will be reached but in my opinion people will be paying more.

On Sky it costs them extra for another EPG listing, which is probably not worth it for the odd overflow game.

On VM I expect that they'll have a proper EPG listing; thus enabling the possibility of recording ;)

understand all this and agree with most but playing devils advocate for one moment...lets remember its not as if BT are getting nothing from VM. isnt it like 4 quid for every person on XL goes to BT? Which admittedly is weak and low but they are getting a return currently.

The champions league kicks in next year maybe BT would see the advantage of running the VM contract down for one more year showcasing all their "unmissable sport" to entice VM customers to subscribe from the year after??

The crucial fact is that none of us knows what was in the three-year contract which BT and VM signed in August 2013. VM could have signed an agreement to include all new contracts and channels or there could have been exclusions; we simply don't know. How much the Champions League costs BT is not directly relevant; it's what's in the contract between BT and VM that matters.

After reading my post back I agree , I caused confusion by saying once the champions league kicks in , VM's contract runs past this so nothing may change until them terms expire.

My original point stands though I expect us all regardless of platform or BB provider to have to pay a little more going forward thats not to say I'm of the opinion it won't be included in XL however I'm of the view BT will be looking for more money when contracts are up , all pure speculation on my behalf though.

I only meant that BT may not play the silly tricks that Sky are renowned for, like denying red button and HD facilities.

I don't 'hate' Sky, who have done wonders for British TV, I just don't like some of their underhand tactics.

A lot of companies increasingly use underhand tactics OB so we can't just apply those tactics to Sky.

My only gripe with Sky was their dreadful broadband service which my parents had signed up to but thankfully they have now changed supplier.

If Virgin want more money from me for BT having CL football then they can ram it, imo the CL is becoming a bore fest, UEFA need to change the way the tournament is run to bring in more teams, it's the same old, same old every year.

Here an idea for the champions league:

-Have all Europe champions in the League round.
-Move all runners up (Liverpool and Chelsea) into the play off rounds.

Just read about the new Anywhere app update and seen pics of the new Tivo update, on both, the name Virgin Media is a lot less present, only the "infinity" logo appears? Is this a LG moving forward and dropping the name thingy?

I don't like how the new app isn't available for iOS 6 :(
