They made quite a fuss about one 19 year old that felt he was to tired to play, no chance of Rooney ever having done anything like that, he does 'man up' whether he is at his best or not, never gives up trying. :P

We need to learn from the past on the subject of burning young players out way before their time in my opinion as that's probably why Rooney has not improved with age given he was overplayed when he was younger as well.

Perhaps that's why Germany are playing so poor now, they're all tired, doesn't add up to me, players used to play 60+ games a season on slag heap pitches and they managed season in season out but now the games much faster and the players treated like racehorses it's a problem all of a sudden

Tell me about it. I used to have a season ticket but my son is now at an age where he wants to come. Going to the match on Saturday (fortunately I don't support one of those clubs that's always on TV!) used to be no more extraordinary than, say, having a roast on Sunday or renting a film on Friday evening. But now it's become an event - almost a grand day out. And believe me I can fill much more of a day for the same money elsewhere. We now pick around 6 matches a season to go to, but the match day experience is not the same. Invariably you sit in different parts of the ground from match to match, and you can't build up a rapport with those around you in the same way.

If I'm honest, as much as I like the Premier League, I really don't enjoy being in it!

There’s an appalling, bad taste joke doing the rounds at White Hart Lane. What’s the difference between Oscar Pistorius and Tottenham Hotspur? Pistorius has a better defence and gets more shots on target.

Maybe I wrongly had you figured as someone with enough football knowledge to know a team needs a solid defence and strong midfield to be effective.

Moyes I had (and still have) zero time for.

LVG is only going to be able to buy players who are available and will work in the vision he has for the team. In Di Maria's case be was available and it's pretty clear he wanted a flagship signing, no decent manager in his position would have turned him down.

No they wouldn't turn him down but decent centre backs and midfielders were available, benatia for example would've been an immense signing

Re: Football Season 2014/15

In league competitions a strong defence is always more important than a potent attack. Palace finished 11th last season on that basis, with a squad that most would have said should have been relegated. 1 nil (Chelsea at home!) is worth more in points than 3 all (Liverpool, take note!) so the logic is inescapable. £150m in the summer on a team that already contained the likes of Rooney, RvP, etc without adequately resolving the loss of Vidic, Ferdinand (even though they were past their prime) is a ludicrous waste of money.

Just as Torres was for Chelsea? Just because a player is talented doesn't mean he'll be able to work in a team or can adapt to a manager's strategy.

Well he was great at Roma and he's doing great at bayern, a ball playing centre half who can tackle, mark and head who is strong and quick, your right, he'd never fit in with utd's other defenders or adapt to how poor they are.

Russ 22-10-2014 15:06

Re: Football Season 2014/15

So United can only buy who's available and can fit in with LVG's tactics.

Whoever he does get in January or the summer will likely end up replacing most of the backline players he's used so far, I can't only really see Shaw and Rojo getting much in the way of first team games in to next season. Jones and Smalling (if they stay) will likely be used as back-up and for cup games, Rafael might get a look in now and then, McNair and Blackett need more experience.

Once he's then bought a decent midfielder or two the engine will be firing properly. In the relative short space of time he had before the season he could only look at who was available and would fit. Possibly January but certainly in the summer the team will be complete.

Benatia was clearly available as demonstrated by the fact he moved clubs over the summer, perhaps if utd had a manager that wasn't distracted by the world cup there would've been more time to address these glaring deficiencies

'Distracted by the World Cup'? You mean the biggest football tournament in the world that he'd already committed to long before United offered him the job? Yeah that sounds practical.

Yes Benatia was available but for the third time...he may not have fitted in with United's style of play, LVG's vision, tactics, maybe his wage demands were too high etc etc. Maybe he wanted CL football, maybe he just didn't want to play in the PL.

Again, Torres - everything about that deal meant he should have done well at Chelsea, same with Shevchenko

Yes and he is just an example that top quality players were available, actually Torres was really poor in his last Liverpool season and you think given van gaal's experience he would given them a list of targets to go for pre world cup rather than relying on moyes targets, perhaps they were hoping they could just wing it this season and get top four regardless

'Really poor'? Considering he'd managed exactly half the number of league goals that he'd scored the previous season and left in the January transfer window I wouldn't call that 'really poor'. It may not have been his best few months but it was a respectable amount and to go from that to only scoring one goal for Chelsea during that season indicates he just didn't work in the team.

Given the mess Moyes left the club in I think it's pretty obvious any player United were interested in would want more assurances than just sending a club rep while LVG was in Brazil. Woodward made a right pig's ear of transfers up to that point so they only really had the short space of time after the WC.

A man of Van Gaal's experience is not going to be so stupid as to not be 100% involved in transfer targets, or assume he justify his contract on what was already in the team.

The rot had clearly set in and his signing for Chelsea was no more the managers signing than shevchenko was

Moyes was there a season, not many players came or went during his time so he can hardly be blamed for the mess the club was in when he arrived and Herrera and Shaw were moyes choice of transfer target, I don't even blame moyes for getting rid of the backroom staff, most managers would've done exactly the same.

One thing to take out of this week is Barcelona , Real Madrid and Bayern are way clear of everybody else in Europe and the second thing is English clubs apart from Chelsea cannot defend properly.

Its funny how Liverpool and their fans have made Balotelli the scapegoat for their awful performance...talking as if he hadn't swapped his shirt they would have won, it made no difference whether he swapped his shirt or not. I'm just surprised he asked Pepe, at least get a good players shirt!

1/ Personally l think the fault lies with the manager bringing in too many players in at once in the hope that spending money like confetti would cover the loss of that wayward genius Suarez but alas so far not one of the new players has shown that they are worth the money.

2/ Gerrard is also past it but like Toure at Man City it seems the managers at both clubs not got the balls to drop them.

Why are Liverpool being criticised for losing to Madrid anyway? Madrid are a far better team. That's why they lost. No one expected to them to win these games. Are we expected teams to win against every all the time or it's a crisis? If you can't lose to Real Madrid without getting slagged off then expectations in this country have gone overboard.

Wasn't it Pep who cleverly asked Mario and numbnuts duly obliged ? Defenders way of saying he has attacker in his pocket?

I found it fascinating that Jamie Redknapp tore into Liverpool or more so Brendan Rodgers for signing Mario Balotelli whereas a few weeks ago he, Jamie Redknapp was saying it was a brilliant piece of business. Moron.

Re: Football Season 2014/15

Its as if Brendan Rodgers bought him to be the scapegoat for the season, he knew last season was a one off and losing Suarez meant this season was going to be poor in comparison, who better to pass the blame onto than a player who has caused trouble at every club he has been at. Hes being chastised for swapping his shirt, by his own manager! Give me a break! Hes been poor for Liverpool this season but so has everyone else apart from Sterling compared to last season, hes just using Balotelli to cover it up.

Wow the idiots at the Premier League really hate Southampton gatecrashing their precious top six...
Mane's goal on Saturday is now officially an own goal LINK

No mention of crediting Pelle with his other goal.

Im sure refs will have been told to clip our wings.

In other news Brendan Rodgers has enquired about our goalscorer Owen Goal. :)

I don't understand how the PL could hate Southampton for breaking into the top 6.

They only conceded one.;)

Lloris sent off, Harry Kane goes in goal with his team mates patting him on the back then he goes and makes and absolute balls of saving the free kick. :)

As a United fan living on the Wirral I`m surrounded by Liverpool fans. You should hear them up here rubbing it in that they are back in Europe and we are not after our rubbish season last year, so it`s great for a little payback to take the mick when they lose.

I just remind them that Liverpool's chances of winning the CL are exactly the same as United's - they love that :D
