Lets just take a moment of silence to think of those Sky viewers who may lose their television service tonight in the storms.

As others have posted, no reason why Virgin can't go for these channels too.

vm have been happy over the years to let us think channels are exclusive if we havent got them,Now bt are showing thats not the case :(

Thanks for your consideration. My heart went out to all those Virgin viewers a few days back who had a total cable outage. It's good that we think about each other in difficult times.

Information provided in this thread is drawn from a wide variety of sources, some official, some not. It is, therefore, no surprise that you found some of the contributions made by members elsewhere.

The whole point of this thread is to collate all of this information in one place for both convenience and to try to work out what's going on behind the scenes.

By the very nature of some of the sources, the affirmation that you seek will simply not be available, furthermore, sometimes people will be trusted with information that cannot be divulged or has an embargo placed upon it.

It is worth noting that you didn't supply a named source for the information that you supplied (of course, there may be valid reasons for this).

The people who kindly give their time and trouble to contribute to this thread (and sometimes take risks to do so) do not expect praise, but neither do they expect to be met with negativity designed to diminish their credibility.

You are free to take anything or everything with a pinch of salt at any time, after all some of the information will turn out to be incorrect, eg correct plans are reported, but subsequently changed by VM. After all, why shouldn't they, nothing had ever been officially announced!

I had hoped that the distraction of these interjections had been put to bed several pages ago, let this be the end of it.

I hope your broken leg heals swiftly.

Indeed, having both satellite and cable can be useful. When/where was this outage Chad?

I kept my ex sub box and dish, partly in case of problems with the VM service. If I ever stopped subscribing to VM, I would plug a box into their service for the FTA channels if there were ever Freesat or Freeview problems.

Do you have a source for this? None of BTs Youview IPTV channels are HD apart from BT Sports, unless something changed very recently?

Edit: I see they have changed the packages very recently - that looks quite promising, the only thing putting me off Youview was the lack of HD and the seemingly absent recording functionality. Good job BT.

NNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

Well done BT. Certainly shows these channels are now available. It is still very plausible (in my eyes) that they may have been in exclusivity deals with Sky, but that deal may have now passed.

I certainly am not going to criticize VM considering what they have given us this year so far, but I really hope they follow suit quickly. Even if they don't, I will still be a VM customer as they offer the best deal for me and TIVO still rocks my televisual world. :)

Given the fact BT have launched these channels, I wonder if MB'S other DNP (I think there is/was still one outstanding) concerns these channels?

Yes, they do seem to be moving fast. I recently saw The Gadget Show compare Freeview, Freesat and Youview HD PVR's. Youview came out on top for picture quality, ease of use etc.

When I used satellite as my primary TV source, I had problems with bad weather. The main problem seemed to be caused by snow settling on the LNB and dish.

Your cable service should not be affected by bad weather, it may be worth getting an engineer out to check the installation if bad weather impacts on the quality of your picture.

You make a good point. I've often wondered why VM doesn't suffer from the affects of bad weather for those channels that they source from satellite.

Perhaps the professional satellite receiving equipment that they use negates the affects of wind, rain etc??

Could be yes but if say a storm is in Manchester but VMs headquarters is in Breily Hill and it's just light rain there then the signal wouldn't be affected.
Today where i am we've had a right good hiding with the wind and rain and my Sky hasn't lost signal or broken up , this may be because it's a communal dish and the housing association fitted a booster to it too.
Maybe VM use similar technology.

Yep, that could be a reason why.

I like the thought of a communal dish. Aren't these normally used for flats?

I think that they should use them more often to stop the proliferation of ugly satellite dishes, is there any technical reason why all the residents of one street couldn't use one for Sky or Freesat? The same thing could be said about aerials too.

Probably down to the fact that Sky dishes are 45cm (?) and VM head-end dishes are several metres. The roof at Baguley has a huge dish farm....whether they are still used or not, I don't know.

Channel convergence may happen but it will only be between VM and UPC

I think you will find that Belgium and Holland show programming in the original language with subtitles, or did a few years ago.

That, and also the fact that some flats only have a single feed into the premises which means they can't record a program while watching another channel as they are only using one tuner.

Been through all of those with no issues. Not sure how much new hardware/software makes but one would expect those with not such a good signal to begin with to be the ones that may have issues, rather than all customers as this is clearly not the case.

Someone with a tree which partially obstructs their dish anyway are likely candidates to have these weathers affect them, Nothing a tree fairy with a chainsaw can't solve ;)

I guess it also depends on the way the weather is getting to your dish. If it's raining or blowing the dish or LNB about I'm sure that would affect it most.

Yes that is what I meant, a lot of older properties only have a single feed.

The weather effects Cable far greater, my picture is cracking up at the moment, and we have big winds outside.

Could be due to moisture ingress in your cabling somewhere. Get VM to check it out.

Of course weather can cause issues with satellite reception , on the whole though if your setup has been installed correctly by a competent installer the downtime over a year should be minimal unless you live in an area renowned for extreme conditions , if the issue was half as bad as this forum dramatises it to be I'd expect Sky to receive the highest percentage of complaints from its subscriber base among pay TV operators.

At a guess we may see the CBS channels renamed?

These channels keep being bought and renamed every few years! I wonder if this impending sale had anything to do with the CBS channels being placed into M TV until at least 31 December 2013?

It's not fictional drama if these are real experiences by real people. I do expect Satellite reception to be hit by bad weather first and I'm sure they will have the highest number of complaints regarding this.

If Premier Sports is free to the end of the year, l won't pay for it after that as l think most of the football now is on BT Sports.

I don't think there is any football on PS. I may be wrong.

This smartcall service is this to use your virgin media landline "minutes" on a mobile instead via the use of an app???

I never use my minutes on my mobile anyway so i doubt i'll ever need this. suppose it would come in very handy for people without any minutes on pay as you go???

Yes, my understanding is that so long as you can get wi-fi (which is pretty widespread now), then calls are for the making !

An excellent idea that will save me a fortune calling the missus !

Say someone on landline and you want to ring a 0800 number you use the smartcall app and wont be charged.

Or say landline in use by family and want to ring a number u can use smartcall to do so and comes out of ur landline allowances not.mobile specially abroad its like taking ur landline abroad.
