Not that I can see unless it hasn't got it's own category and is just mixed up amongst other content, I am not familiar with it's shows you see.

I don't care myself it's just someone I talk to on DS asked and I said I would ask you or Ben if you were on.

I have read Samsung Sky boxes seem to be quite unreliable (I don't think they are issued anymore though) but the newer Amstrad boxes are excellent as Sky own it and it's obviously in their interest to build them like a tank!. To be honest if a Sky box failed out of warranty (and obviously out of contract) I would just cancel if they didn't offer to replace it, as simple as that.

My dad has had a standard Pace Sky box for years without problems so it does seem a mixed bag.

My LCD display is shot on my Samsung V+ and it's less than a year old, assuming it was new when I got it but I know I could phone up and get it fixed or replaced for free I was just worried I might get a replacement SA box as I often record radio shows so have never bothered as otherwise it's fine.

I was answering your question on other providers which I have tried in the past, once bitten twice shy.

I have told you to ring up before to get that box replaced, if he offers a SA explain why you need a Samsung.

I think the future of tv is direct internet tv buying channel apps from content providers like HBO,FOX, MLB, NFL even Sky etc. It would be nice to only pay for what we want to watch and not pay for eg. 300 channel and watch 20! So having the best and fast internet in the country Virgin seems a good place to be. Especially with Tivo.

I think every one has had different experiences no matter the supplier. My mother who is 87 would love Vm, but her area is not cabled, so she has Sky and has done so for over three years, she has never had a problem, whereas her friend has had three replacement boxes from Sky in that time.
I have been with Telewest and now VM for over 14 years, I have only ever had one box swapped out as being faulty, before that I was with Sky and never had a problem. My daughter has been with VM for 2 years and has had three replacement boxes, its all depends on the experiences the customer has had.

I would just be worried if they only had a SA on the van even if I had already called, it's not a major problem anyway it's works fine apart from that.

Obviously the info appears onscreen if I press ok anyway.

No Tivo for us, maybe in a year or so when it's established and offers a few more tricks and apps though, I wouldn't completely rule it out.

The LCD isn't a major issue, and the LCD display isn't really vital in my opinion but it's nice if you have it. My BT Vision box never had it and I survived!

It was originally promoted to stop people going to Freeview. I'm not sure why they have stopped doing this, unless it was to get a large volume of boxes into peoples homes. They are more likely to use VM pay TV if they have a box there already. Perhaps they are now running low on boxes??

The VM "Freeview" package also includes Catch Up TV and the ability to buy PPV movies.

I think that they've probably priced it artificially high so that they can say "well, we've offered it to other providers but they're not interested". Once it moves into the Variety Pack later this year I'm sure the situation will change.

I agree.

There is Tiny Pop content but hasn't that always been there, or did Ben mean it was Tiny Pop OD content that was joining. I am not 100% sure if it has always been there though.

It's just when I emailed CSC about it they never mentioned Pop was joining TVC. it was quite a standard reply though.

I can't find it either.

Nonsense, it was clearly promoted as such at the time. As channels were added to Freeview, VM made them available to TV M customers. In fact, before VM gained access to Sky 3/Pick TV, Sky 1 was in the free* pack.

*Whilst TV M was free, one had to take a VM 'phone line to have it.

Does anyone have a link to the article in which Neil Berkett mentions 80 HD channels in 3 years?

I want to read the quote to see exactly what his words are. If he states Virgin Media will definitely deliver 80 new HD channels then great, if he states Virgin Media hope to deliver or could deliver 80 within 3 years then I'm nowhere near excited. What I'd like to know is exactly who is supposed to be broadcasting these 80 new channels? We're about 25 behind SKY currently however I can't see where the other 55 come from unless Virgin launch a +1 version of the HD channels we currently have, and could get soon.

Big thanks to anyone who can post the link for me.

"So first of all, we provide a separate service for video-on-demand that enables us to provide up to a billion video-on-demand events through next year, according to our forecasts. That is separate from the connectivity that you have in your TiVo box for when you want to be able to watch video over-the-top. It is separate from the broadcast connectivity that we have where effectively we are providing 300 standard definition channels, 30 HD channels at the moment, but with a path to grow to 80 HD channels over the next two years, or three years." - Paul Buttery, Virgin Media Chief Customer & Networks Officer.

"What we've also got is our broadcast capacity in there, so, at the moment, we provide 300 standard definition channels and 30 high definition channels. Over the next couple of years, we can grow the number of high definition channels from 30 to 80. We've allocated capacity for that, as the viewing habits start to change, as we move from SD to HD, and as we move from scheduled TV to more on demand TV or TV when you want it, we're able to adjust the allocation of that capacity and start to balance that between both TiVo, Video on Demand, broadband and broadcast. So, we have a highly flexible network that will be able to change as consumer habits change." - Paul Buttery, Virgin Media Chief Customer and Networks Officer.

'Can' and 'Will' are quite different things indeed, that makes far more sense. Obviously he is just saying it is technically possible.

I don't think anyone seriously expects VM to carry 80 HD channels in less than 3 years, not unless they drastically change their pricing structure or HD is considered standard and dosen't attracts a premium but I think that is a while away. It's good to hear they expect to be technically able to provide it though.

As far as I know even BSkyB hadn't made such a claim either which is why I thought it fanciful when I first heard the claim being bandied around but having read that statement they were not saying they 'will' have 80 HD channels. And I doubt they will, in fact I am not so sure even Sky will.

But let's be fair, At least VM recognised they were way wide of the mark on consumers attitude to linear HD, even upto just a couple of years ago so at least they have listened.

VM always said they would launch more HD channels when the time was right, which is exactly what they did.

Despite what you may think from reading forums like this, people simply weren't watching HD then. Take a look at the BBC HD figure in Sept 2008. Compare with the likes of Dance Nation and Horse&Country.

Even now, the HD simulcasts only get about a quarter the viewers of their SD equivalent. (Far less in the case of BBC1 and ITV1).

Cheers for the above guys.

I think that makes it crystal clear. I suspected the quotes would be along those lines but I just wanted to read if for myself.

The main thing is Virgin are making ever effort to future proof their business.

To be honest like most of us I am not too interested in back then, i'm more intersted in now which is why I acknowledged that VM acknowledged it and got moving with HD, I was actually rather complimenting them.

I would be astonished if the HD simulcasts didn't get way less viewers than their SD counterpart as the vast majority of homes even now do not have an HD service do they? One way of encouraging people to switch is to launch more services I suppose.

I noticed Sky Atlantic's ratings are picking up, their reach is higher than all the movie channels individually and SSP 3 & 4 which maybe isn't surprising as they are premium channels but it's also considerably higher than FX and very nearly the same as Comedy Central too.

Mind you I guess it should given the money they have thrown at it!

That's a very good point actually.

I didn't always bother either up until christmas when we got a much bigger TV.

But the very recent HD/SD EPG swapover on Sky will provide a very rapid jump in those figures that were referred to, at least for a lot of the pay channels anyway.

I think you posted this 24 days too early.

The quarter ends on March 31st ;)

Plenty of time for an announcement yet :)

Sky use a different pricing structure to VM for HD; they charge for non Premium channels, VM don't. Because sky charge for an HD channel doesn' make it a Premium channel.

Is there not more important things in life than the number of HD channels we have ?

Sometimes, I honestly feel that some people lose grip on the important things in life. We coped very well without HD, and sure we can cope a bit longer ! ;)

What services do you subscribe to? You have said in the past you don't seem that bothered about a fair few HD channels which is fair enough, I never used to be that bothered either. It was only when we got a 46" set that we finally realised how good it is.

I would politely say anyone who thinks HD is less than one of the biggest growth areas in TV is a bit behind the times of a lot of the opinion of Pay TV customers really, but each to their own.

Yes, there are more important things in life. But this is a forum on VM TV, not a general discussion forum. It would be wrong if things like HD channels weren't discussed here.

I have a 40 inch Sammy and there is a massive difference between SD and HD.

Must be a poor set the difference is still big, even though they upscale well.

Well mine is a 6 series 40 inch Sammy and HD is amazing , in fact once you've watched HD on it anything else doesn't compare.

And there's another very important aspect of HD TV, which is, 5.1 sound.

If someone says there is no difference between HD & SD in picture quality, they are in one of two camps

Could not care less
Problem with their eyesight

Excellent point , just watch Sky sports in HD and then switch to SD if you see no difference get to specsavers.

Ok - lets not get too personal here. my observation is that I personally dont think HD is all that great on some channels.

Watch True Blood of FX HD and I dont see any benefit. However, I am currently watching Discovery HD and the picture is superb.

All horses for courses. Some will say its the dogs dangly bits - others like me say its good, but its not something I would purposly watch until it becomes the norm.

And yes, I did shed a tear when I dumped vinyl for CD

I agree with a lot of that.

When we only had a 32" set the difference was minimal, but on a 46" set it is sometimes a huge difference but the quality differs on different channels and indeed different content shown on the same channel. And of course the audio can be like night and day too.

BBC HD is usually very good but EastEnders seems only marginally better in HD to me.

I find outdoor stuff shines better in HD maybe due to lighting conditions.

procrastination refers to the act of replacing high-priority actions with tasks of low-priority, and thus putting off important tasks to a later time.

But Virgin says it’s still almost £1 cheaper than BT which hikes its monthly line rental costs up 30p to £13.90 from April 28.

What about the call charges ?

I have absolutely no evidence of this but just have a feeling that perhaps some or maybe all of the ITV HD channels might appear soon. I cannot see that they would be that expensive to add and would be a popular addition.

Crozier seemed at pains to stress that the deal they have isn't exclusive with Sky when he was interviewed in a paper the other day.

Just a thought.
