Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)
There are several things l am not happy about, according to VM there should have been 'seven' HD channels coming, instead we get four, and we have been waiting months for this, what about ITVHD, l can never understand VM, the customers are demanding other HD channels plus Sky, but all we get is channels, that customers don't watch, Also the SFL have sorted out the ESPN deal, and yet again VM is behind, what the hell is happening.

You might not watch the channels that are launching in HD but they are some of the most popular channels. What makes you think VM are behind? just because Sky has agreed a deal already. VM could still be negotiating and trying to get a better deal than what Sky got. |

I suspect you're thinking of the "text" button on the remote control, which as far as I know has never done anything. I wonder whether it was originally intended to launch an "analogue" teletext interpreter. It's exceedingly unlikely that the button couldn't be remapped as a trigger, but since the BBC and perhaps Nat Geo would be the only ones to use it I doubt VM think it's worth the effort - all the text content is available under the red button (and, unique to VM - at least, in terms of platforms with any substantial amount of users - on any channel through the Interactive menu) and on other platforms carrying BBC Red Button the text button does exactly the same thing as the red button. Since it's relevant to my post, I ought to point out that Sky Text and Sky Active work a little differently - "text" on a Sky channel (on Sky and Freeview) will take you to Sky Text, and red on a Sky channel (on Sky) takes you to a version of the Sky Active portal. There is still a fairly sizeable differential between your configuration and mine. Surely as analogue is phased out and the channel lineup on ex-NTL and ex-TW merge we should be seeing similar numbers in all areas on all platforms. |
Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)
The four additional HD channels will be available from August 1st. The PictureBox service HD films will increase to around 75% of their films within the first year. Confirmation on ESPN is expected shortly. And there may be more additional HD channels (Eurosport and History?) available October/November.

Theft of this nature either directly affects the price we pay for our services or stifles the development of the network. VM might have been able to offer some services such as additional channels, HD and faster broadband sooner, if they had the revenue from these parasites. And don't listen to the "I wouldn't have paid for the extra channels anyway" excuse. :( Put a pin through his co-ax! Who's he gonna call? :D {No don't do that. Really, don't. I just said that for comic effect.} |
Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)
I really hope we get the extra 2 HD channels, not just cos i really want Eurosport HD but for VM to be able to say "We offer Movies sport and documentaries in HD" is a pretty nice marketing strategy!

I feel a renumbering coming on, once the new HD and other channels settle down, possibly early next year. It is hard to come up with an ideal numbering scheme which groups like channels together, caters for +1 and HD channels and still reserves numbers or groups of numbers for certain channels (e.g. BBC1..4; ITV1..4; the C4 suite; the Five suite; Sky1..3; Virgin; Living etc.). We'll see what they come up with. I'll miss Living +2. :( |

Basically five got the worst freeview HD license, which lets them launch one when bandwidth allows, and seeing as how the multiplex has only 30mbps of bandwidth, it's going to be a long long time before the technology improves enough to launch the 4 HD channels on the single multiplex that's set aside for them. Cramming just 3 into there is going to result in them having a pretty poor bitrate. |

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)
After following this thread in its many forms for a long long time I have decided to add my first post, So hello all.:wavey::wavey:
On the subject of the hd channels I have been waiting patiently for the price to come down on the tv's before investing in the equipment and then waiting for news of channels to arrive on virgin. Now the channels are arriving i think i will make the switch fairly soon. The announced channels will do me fine for now (accept mtv, I have never been one for music vidoes, if I a want music i have an mp3 player for that) and the hd content in vod is not bad. However am i being thick in thinking that at least 2 of the four channels annouced belong to skys parent company (news corparation)? Does anyone think that this may mean that the boys at news corp may be seeing that its better to get the channels out on all platforms and maximize revenue thru wholesale values for the channels rather than have them as a sky exclusive? i know it will be a long time before we see the sky branded hd channels on virgin but maybe any other hd channels that sky has a hand in or has them tied to exclusive deals may be coming in the future.:eh: On another note I wonder if we will ever get the sky player on virgin (lol) now that would be a coup. Anyway thanks for letting me waffle but what does anyone else think?:blah::blah: |

If you look at what i said it was meant to be sarcastic (as if sky would give virgin acces to the only good content it has on demand) But as TheDon says we could do with the content. Surley more vod content is better and I for one would happily watch a full series of Stargate atlantis or 24 on vod rather than splash out on the dvds ( as i enjoy them but not enough to shell out the £30+ for the box set) Anyway each to their own i suppose. |
