I STILL can't get MMS to work. mainly as apple have chosen to remove the option to change the apn / mms settings and the phone thinks it's on t-mobile for the mobile internet but still shows Virgin as the network.

Grr.

Turn Wi-Fi on, and open Safari.

Browse to "help.benm.at" < put this in the address bar exactly as it appears.

Scroll to the bottom and press Tethering under the Features section

Select United Kingdom under Country

Select "Virgin"

Select "Download"

Select "Install"

Restart your phone and there you have your mobile internet on Virgin!

Re: The iPhone thread

Hi guys,

I started a new thread the other day about iPhone 3GS / iPhone 4 as I am currently considering buying one. Since I began that thread, I've seen an offer with T-Mobile to get a free iPhone 3GS for £15 a month for 24 months which seems like a great deal.

I currently have a BlackBerry 8520 so a 3GS would be a massive step up from my BB but I just wanted to ask anyone with a little more knowledge of iPhones whether this really is a good deal as obviously I am aware that the 3GS is 2 years old now and wondering whether Apple will stop supporting it and it would become obsolete during the next two years?

The iPhone 4 / 4S would be the obvious choice but then I would either have to double the monthly tariff or stump up £100+ up front.

I should mention the £15 tariff has sufficient minutes / texts / data for my use and therefore would just be grateful for a few of you iPhone users giving me your thoughts.

Cheers

Superblade

Re: The iPhone thread

Cheers for that, this is how I got the apn settings on in the end. Trouble isn't doesn't help with mms settings.

However this morning I finally sussed it ;). So here's what I did.

Get hold old an o2 iPhone sim.

Take out your virgin sim in and out the o2 one in. Now go to general settings network. The option to change the apn and mms settings will be there. But with the O2 details. DO NOT NAVIGATE AWAY FROM THIS SCREEN UNTIL FINISHED.

Take out the O2 sim and swap it for the virgin one...... Wait till it picks up the network. All the details will change to tmobile when it does. Now you can edit your settings :)

Long winded yup but at least it works .

did you try getting virgin to send the details to your phone? my iphone is arriving today :-) ( a day off work for me ) if i get problems with internet etc then ill try get Virgin to send me the details for mms/sms/web

dilli-theclaw 15-11-2011 11:09

Re: The iPhone thread

Virgin list the iPhone 4 as not supported for mobile web and the instructions listed for mms just don't work.

When I called to ask them they told me they couldn't send the settings. Mind you they didn't believe the option to enter the settings wasn't there either.

Edit - if you have an older virgin sim you may be ok but on no account update the carrier settings if iTunes asks, that will remove the apn/mms settings menu.

Martyn 15-11-2011 11:21

Re: The iPhone thread

apparently on there website they don't support the Galaxy S2 either but i was messy around to see if the phone was unlock ( which it is ) and just randomly select a new phone on the website and type in your phone number it will send the settings etc... if it works it will solve a lot of issues with people having trouble, i never use MMS, it costs to much email is how i send pictures to people. :)

Re: The iPhone thread

It doesn't work I just tried it (probably the sim card) I don't tend to use the mms but I like it to be right you know ;)

But if all you want is the data then your link is just fine :tu:

You were very fortunate indeed, just bear in mind what I said about carrier updates and iTunes or it won't continue to work.

Did you know that the iphone doesn't delete your text messages?
it keeps them in /private/var/mobile/Library/Spotlight/com.apple.MobileSMS

I only found out from messing about with biteSMS. and I've been reading the ones from the person I bought the phone off.

it even includes the phone numbers.

There's a camera app I have that has released a new version on the app store.
the only change is "Removal of Volume shot as requested by Apple"

He should have wiped it. As should anyone selling a computing device containing personal info, whether it uses iOS, Android, Symbian, OSX or any verson of Windows (any version/edition). They all leave information in places we don't know about, but some really person determined could find.

Actually, that was because Apple (until recently) did not allow non-apple apps to take control of the buttons on the phone, a policy adopted by, amongst others, Nokia (on the n95 at least). A policy they have since altered.

You need a micro SIM on the iPhone 4 onwards whoever your provider is

I believe VM are the only major provider who at the moment do not supply a micro SIM card

I suppose that's understandable as they do not support or supply the iPhone

SIM cutting is the only way to go if you want to use a iPhone on VM network at the moment

But I know of several folk who would come over to VM if a micro SIM was available without having to cut the supplied one

There's a website called 'Why Siri Why' but since it contains some strong language in the messages sent by Siri or manually corrected after I shall leave it for people to google it rather than providing a link. It's along the lines of damnyouautocorrect (also can contain strong language when people become frustrated, or the imaginative autocorrect)

Thing is, T9 dictionaries have been around for years along with predictive text, yet these sites really had to wait for the iPhone before they became necessary. Is the iPhone progress or a dark plot by apple to create stress and tension in families?

Anti iphone bias aside, the iphone is actually no worse or better for these autocorrection errors than any phone. No autocorrection system (Be it T9, the iPhone one or any other) is perfect. They all make mistakes. It's due to the nature of language. Humans are a lot more intelligent than any machine, and we still make mistakes with language.

These sites aren't necessary, even now. They are sometimes amusing, but not necessary. The only reason they didn't happen before is (IMO) that until damnyouautocorrect, no one really thought of doing them.

I've an iPhone for personal use and a Blackberry Torch 9860. The iphone automatically corrects the word as soon as you press space whereas on the blackberry you have to press the corrected word - pressing space accepts what you have typed. So if you send a text not really paying attention on a blackberry the worst you can get is spelling errors on the iphone you could get all sort of random words!

That said I do think most of the ones on damnyouautocorrect are fake.

Re: The iPhone thread

Hmm. Despite initially being dubious of it, I've found Siri to be quite handy sometimes, especially for handsfree use.

e.g. If I'm walking home from work, & have my earphones in, I can press the button on the earphones and dictate a text message to my wife, e.g. "Ask my wife what should I get for dinner?". I think you can get it to remind you to do things when you reach a certain location too, e.g. once you get home or get to work.

I just used it now to create a dental appointment in my calendar. Easier than going through it manually using the screen.

Anyway...

Microsoft has - rather bizarrely IMO - released a few big apps on iOS recently -

Last week: My Xbox LIVE

Yesterday: OneNote

Today: SkyDrive

Today: Kinectimals

That's better than getting it directly from Vodafone! :)

Via Vodafone:

£31 per month for 24 months - 300 minutes, "unlimited" SMS, 500MB data. Phone = £169.

£36 per month for 24 months - 600 minutes, "unlimited" SMS, 500MB data. Phone = £99.

It's a lot better than I thought it would be. [Although it does get caught out sometimes, as shown by my first use of it earlier in the thread]

It's useful for dictating text messages etc., especially in a hands-free setting. It's pretty good for answering questions too, or setting up reminders etc.

I don't use it a lot - but it can be quite handy.

I think we're not getting the location stuff here for another few months yet.

turn Siri off, then back on. Settings > General > Siri - that should sort it. either that, or reboot your iPhone. also - ensure you definitely have a connection to the interwebz either via 3G or Wifi

I now have a 4S running 5.0.1 with an untethered Jailbreak, thanks to the Dev Team & Chronic Dev "Dream Team" and Absinthe :)

SBSettings for iOS5 is great. Also installed my other main JB apps: BrowserChanger so I can use iCab Mobile as the default browser instead of Safari, and Intelliscreen... this time IntelliscreenX (ISX). ISX rocks. The iOS5 Notification Centre is far better than notifications on iOS4 and below... and ISX is far better than iOS5's. I now have Mail, Twitter, Facebook, and RSS feeds in my Notification Centre, plus can access the lot from the Lock Screen. Awesome.

Don't think I'll bother with my iPad, though. I don't use Notifications on the iPad, and don't need the SBSettings toggles. Not worth doing for BrowserChanger alone. The only other thing I ever Jailbroke the iPhone for before was tethering... which is irrelevant for the iPad (& not needed on the iPhone now with the new O2 tariffs).

Anyway I've been using Android for the past 4 years and although I have a lot of respect for it, I'm getting a bit annoyed with the occasional freezing and other little annoyances. So I need to know that what Apple can provide me will match what I've had on Android.

Firstly, are there any free satnavs available for it? On terms with the turn-by-turn navigation you get with Google Maps?

I don't think there are any free ones. they only become free if you jailbreak it.

A vote for NavFree from me - I have it on my iPad and it's got me out of a pickle a couple of times, on occasions I wasn't expecting to end up somewhere unfamiliar and didn't have the TomTom in the car.

Start using it, and rapidly become an I-can't-shut-up-about-my-iphone iPhone owner. :p:

i'd turn off "spotlight search" & "Bluetooth" if you're not using it, pick what notifications YOU want, not the ones the iphone wants you to have.
You can import your contacts from your sim card, but don't forget you can't write to the sim!
Close open apps by double clicking the home button, hold the open app until it "wriggles" then press the cross next to the open app.
Oh and most of all ENJOY YOUR NEW TOY!

Grow a 'soul patch', buy some horn-rimmed glasses and a bobble hat, and then you'll be a fully-fledged hipster......:D

Jailbreaking won't be an option thanks ;)

It needed an OS update straight away and that went through quite smoothly.

Still potching about with it for now - it's quite complicated as I've been on Android for almost 4 years and really used to their way of doing things which suited me just fine. I'm not going to go fawning over my iPhone just because it's an iPhone. Android was very easy to use.

Just need to import my Google Contacts and get my ringtones on it and I'll be happy :)

How to set up Google Sync on an iPhone: https://support.google.com/mobile/bi...&answer=138740

Very easy. Push Gmail, Contacts, and Calendar.

Ringtones must be encoded with AAC and be within an .m4r container, and be no more than 30 seconds long.

Instructions:

http://www.ehow.com/how_2160460_cust...ones-free.html

I think there are also apps and websites that will do it for you.

You can also create custom alert sounds the same way.

Cheers Matt - I just created a ringtone but I can't sync it, I keep getting a message saying it failed to sync - "the sync session failed to start". Odd as I managed to sync all my music to my iphone 20 minutes ago :erm:

My 3pg clips are working on it ok. I found Dropbox which works ok but I'd much rather a drag-and-drop method, I'm guessing itunes doesn't allow that :(

Does dropbox work okay for all vid formats? May be a stopgap solution to the problem I'm having in the iPad thread. Another user suggested it there but couldn't say for definite if it would let me download video content or whether it would reject it like safari did when I tried a browser based transfer.

iTunes 10.6.1 has just been released... apparently one of the bug fixes is regarding photo syncing. Hopefully that's all your issue was.

I've never synced photos to mine, so can't really help.

I've not used Dropbox for media, but I have a media player on my iPad called AVPlayerHD. I use it for videos that iOS doesn't support (e.g. Xvid, mkv). It does also support the same ones iOS supports, though, such as .mp4. You can transfer videos to it using an iTunes sync *or* you can transfer directly from your PC over WiFi via (IIRC) FTP or a browser. You could try that for your issue, after first moving the video to a PC.

Hugh 29-03-2012 11:35

Anyone know of any good apps to download film trailers with? I can't find anything specific in the app store. With Google Play you could get them straight from there.

Re: The iPhone thread

This is really annoying. I've made a ringtone by right-clicking on 'create AAC version' then opening it in Windows Explorer. Deleted the AAC version from my listing in itunes, right clicked on it in WE and changed the extension to .m4r then played it to get it back in to itunes and it appears in 'Tones'.

Then when I sync it to my phone it isn't under settings/sounds/ringtone. It ends up in my Music, and I can't select it as a ringtone.

MadGamer 24-04-2012 21:58

iirc it need to be under Ringtones in iTunes for it to appear as a ringtone on the iPhone :)

I've tried 2 versions, one at 58 seconds and another at 30. Neither will work as a ringtone. It's as if despite my changing the extension, it just goes back to an m4a.

I can't see it causing any kind of "browser war". Even though you can install 3rd party browsers on iOS, you cannot (unless you Jailbreak) change the default browser from Safari. So if you use Chrome (or Atomic or iCab etc.), any time you click on a link or do anything else that would open a browser window, it will always open Safari.
