I don't know if it's something in the tap water in Newcastle but last year I saw a couple of lassies in the city centre wearing santa hats and bikinis.
And a scarf each as a concession to the temperature.........it was -10c.

Last year I saw 2 'top heavy' girls about 18 having a smoke outside a club in the snow
at about 11:30 only wearing bikinis and my first thought was they are going to freeze
made me feel really old

Well blow me down..... we had a JCB arrive last night at about 9pm to clear a track up the hill we live on. First time that's ever happened so well done to the local council. :tu:

Re: Snow !

You are lucky.

I only live 2 miles from the town centre and yet this is the 4th day we have not had a bus service.

I did see a gritter going past last night but it didn't look as though he was spreading salt, if he was I doubt it would be as much as I may put on my dinner. We walked down to some local shops yesterday only to find they had no bread or milk and one of the shop assistants said they did not know when it would be coming in.

Yesterday afternoon I finally finished digging the snow from my driveway, so later today we are going to go to the next village to what we can get there.

Peter_ 04-12-2010 10:24

Re: Snow !

We have had very little snow here in Liverpool, last night we had a very light dusting followed by some rain then a nice frost to top it it all off, so the side roads and pavements are nice and slippy.

I also saw one idiot out for run at full pelt, an accident waiting to happen.

Osem 04-12-2010 10:27

Re: Snow !

Well I think the panic buyer brigade are largely to thank for the shortages. We were in town two days ago and saw folks in Tesco's loaded up with umpteen loaves of bread and cartons of milk as if the world was about to end. The result was that for the rest of the day the store was entirely sold out of these basics. Quite why the stores don't restrict sales in situations like this defeats me - they readily put a limit on special offers.

Due to the lack of snow we have not had the panic buying brigade as yet, but if this continues I expect we will get them soon enough.

YUP - had that earlier this year during the snow. Two guys in a pickup pulled up next to the grit bin at the bottom of our hill, emptied it and drove off with what looked like a lot of other stolen grit on board. I expect they're the same **** bags who charge to clear trees, rubbish, hardcore etc. then dump it down some country lane.....

Where I lived at the time we had almost 3 foot of snow and I still went to school everyday, no school closures then, even though the outside loos froze up, we had an arrangement with local pub to use theirs in emergency.

Parts of the country were cut off for weeks and it was the whole of the UK that got the snow and ice, with the South East I think getting a fall of just over 2 ft.

The temperatures were below freezing most days and we had no double glazing or central heating, with ice forming on inside of windows. Most people still went to work, usually walking as most people then living close to their place of work.

So if this winter is to be worse than that it has alot to live up to and if does come it will cause chaos on a scale not seen before as most people would not know how to cope.

I remember that winter as well.My family were living in Meriworth Drive on top of Shooters Hill in London. The council workmen cleared the pavements and the banks of displaced ice were hanging around for weeks after long after it had thawed elsewhere.I went to school(Plumstead Juniors) everyday after Christmas as well.

It's the only white Christmas I ever had..:)

The bit I put in bold really goes to the heart of the issue. These days it is not uncommon for people to commute by car for an hour or more to work - often much, much more in the southeast of England. Our pattern of life simply isn't as resilient to disruptions in our transport infrastructure as it once was.

All our roads are far more heavily used and a great deal of freight is carried on them. A vast number of the problems on the roads over the last couple of weeks has been jack-knifed lorries - something that would have been less of a problem in the 1960s with fewer lorries on the road and fewer cars to get stuck behind them.

As for frozen toilets and the use of your local pub .... well I don't doubt that worked as a solution to the problem, but thankfully attitudes towards health and hygiene in schools are now a light-year away from what they used to be. Indoor toilets will have solved most freezing problems, but if our childrens' school suffered a loss of running water for any reason, these days it would be forced to close, and rightly so in my view.

I agree with this. Seen plenty of cars with loads of snow on the roof and they don't realise the first time they brake suddenly it goes over the windscreen and they can't see

Bit of an urban myth. You'd need to fail the attitude test spectacularly as there isn't a specific offence for not clearing snow from the roof of vehicles.

Bit of an urban myth. You'd need to fail the attitude test spectacularly as there isn't a specific offence for not clearing snow from the roof of vehicles.

I read on the BBC website that not clearing the roof is an offense, although they could have made a mistake

Not unless they've made it an offence in the last couple of days without telling anyone. :)

Many road users have been concerned in particular by rumours that they could be fined for driving with snow on their roofs.

Strathclyde’s Road Policing Unit said that while there is no specific legislation on driving with snow on the roof of a vehicle, if it slips over the windscreen, or flies into the path of another car, it could leave the driver open to being penalised for driving without due consideration, dangerous driving, not being in proper control of the vehicle, not having a full view ahead and windows not being sufficiently clean.
So as with most things its not a specific offence but if you extract the urine you can be dealt with in a suitable manner. ;)

The most stupid one I saw had almost a foot of snow covering the roof, they deserve to be slapped, either with points, a fine or just a slap from me :)

Spend two hours shovelling the drive and the hill at my house. Came in, sat down with a well deserved beer, glanced out the window and yep snowing again!

AFAIK the law stems from unsafe loading (like if you drove around in the summer with a pile of sand on your roof) or having an unsafe vehicle (like if you had a roof panel unsecured which flew off)

The police know they can't stop and prosecute everyone so prefer going down the awareness route or failing that, the attitude test route.

It is dangerous though. I saw an artic going round a roundabout and the snow and ice slid off onto the car in the next lane. It made a sizeable donk so there was obviously ice there. The car didn't seem too afected but if it was a (motor-)cyclist then the result could have been more severe.

Well on saturday I just cleaned the windows and lights, I didn't go fast enough for the snow to come of the car. Some drivers didn't even clean indicators.

The was an idiot in Tesco today with snow on his roof and bonnet that covered his indicators and headlights, now if that is not an offence I am at a loss.

Also if you have a mound of snow around 8/10 inches deep on the bonnet and similar on the roof that has to be either dangerous driving or driving without due care and attention.

Before you set off
you MUST be able to see, so clear all snow and ice from all your windows
you MUST ensure that lights are clean and number plates are clearly visible and legible
