After some research, we're all wrong lol.

It was in the cup winners cup final http://www.eastlondonhistory.com/sealey.htm

I'll always remember the start of the 1991 season, Les Sealey had left for Aston Villa, and Man U had signed Peter schmeichel in the summer. Everyone had heard about Schmeichel's ability to kick (and throw the ball) a huge distance, and just before the kick off, Les Sealey came and sat down next to the Man U supporters (me included) to watch Schmeichel's performance.

The Look on Sealey's face was a great moment, as he watched Schmeichel kicking and throwing the ball almost the full length of the pitch with comparitable ease. It was great that he had taken the time to sit with the Man U fans, and have a banter with us. A larger than life character, that will live in the memory of Man U supporters (and supporters of the other clubs he played for) sadly there are not many characters left like him in the game now. The link I gave above, says how he offered Jim Leighton his FA cup winners medal in 1990, a measure of the man I would say. :)

I'm afraid that, that link is wrong as I was at the cup winners cup final and it didn't happen then. It was at Wembley and I remember we were losing, which was the reason he didn't want to go off for. I remember watching it on tv.

I have searched Google and the only mention is in Wikipedia, which is word for word what is said above.

There wasn't a replay. We lost 1-0 to Sheffield Wednesday.

For the Cup Winners, Cup final, if I remember right, he had just come back into the side and played with a bandage on his leg. That might be what that link meant.

I do remember the game (honest) lol. The goal anyway. In off the foot of the post (was it John Sheridan ?)

What confused me was russ' post mentioning a replay, when I was sure there wasn't one for the league cup game.

I remember also, Sealey had a bandage on his leg, strange how the site I linked to apparently has it wrong and yet nobody has picked up on it (or failed to mention it to the site)

Fergie: 'Neville Only Charged Because He's Man Utd'

Furious Sir Alex Ferguson has blasted the Football Association's compliance unit and claimed Gary Neville has only been landed with an improper conduct charge because he is a Manchester United player.

[...]

"Absolutely no chance,'' was Ferguson's blunt response when he was asked if the FA would have launched the charge had Neville played for a side other than Manchester United.

"Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher ran the full length of the field with their fists raised at the Everton fans recently and not a word was said.

"At Manchester City, Robbie Fowler ran past our fans showing five fingers, our fans surged to the front and the stewards had real trouble dealing with them and not a word was said then either.

"The FA compliance office only reacts when the press writes it. That is a fact and it can't be right.

I remember a few years ago (when Bobby Robson was manager) Nigel Clarke was in a posse of reporters flying on the same plane as Robson to a match. He was caught on camera saying if Robson got the wrong result "robson will fry"

There are some reporters that do wish the best for the england team, there are however a certain section that thrive on the national team failing. Remember the Graham Taylor documentary ? True Taylor was out of his depth, but did he deserve some of the headlines he got. And I think most football supporters remember the treatment John Barnes received from the boo boy's at wembley. This was a direct result of the headlines he got from the "gutter press".

To be honest given the talent that we have available for the England team, even a monkey sitting on the bench eating bananas would have taken us to the World Cup. Yes Sven has had a good record being in charge but I definately think thats down to the team more than his management skills.

As for Euro 2008, england are in one of the easiest groups. If they dont qualify it wont be the NOTW fault, it will be down to the players

That talent was available to keegan the previous manager but he chose to use batty and co instead. So its ok to credit sven for using youngsters and building a new team when things are conveniant but then to say any manager can do well with these players, sorry but its not quite that simple, a bad manager can quite easily lose games with the same players.

I doubt there will be anything like the debacle in the last round. Fergie had to shuffle the pack in the last round, because of the fixture list. There's no reason at all why he should field anything but as strong a side as possible. We have no midweek game (unlike Arsenal, probably why Wenger shuffled the pack for todays game against Bolton). And with the current midfield crisis at Man U, he doesn't really have too many options anyway.

Nah not really, I'd prefer to play teams that are known rather then teams who are not so well known and teams who have players playing the biggest game of their lives.

well we are starting to show a big of form now and we beat them the other day with a patched up midfield.. with this being the only trophy we can win apart from the league cup and liverpool still in Europe we stand a chance of beating them.. only prob is it's at their place and we seem too caution away from home now

still looking on the bright side Arsenal are out and won't be winning anything this year :D

Not being a utd or liverpool fan, I think utd will win this one. Liverpool looked under pressure from the balls delivered in from wide in the second half, not dealing well with them at all well. I can see the same pressure being applied by Utd with better strikers to benefit from it.

I don't want to sit on the fence so I would go for a draw, if it was the old days it may well have gone for umpteen replay's.

Us Arsenal fans have nothing to worry about though as we lost due to 3 defences erros, two by Big Sol who apparently left the ground after being subbed at Half Time.

I think on recent results, you should be concentrating on your own teams short comings :D

In the space of a week you have gone out of 2 cup competitions, and lost at home to a local rival, when you were probably still laughing at spurs' result. It must be terrible when you think you have a "home banker" only to end up in the same position as before, but with a game less to catch up with Spurs :D

have to say i blame VDS for last night.. he should have put the free kick round the post and was too slow to react anyway

for the second goal he never comes off his line at any point this season so Rio thought he would be on the line.. VDS can see the whole play and can see Rio is about to play the ball.. how is Rio supposed to know VDS is coming for it unless he shouts out

for the third goal he should have tipped it round too

he gets beaten all the time is too slow and over the hill know.. not seen any of these 20 points a season he's meant to be saving us

Re: [Merged] The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season

For 7 years now we've been looking for Schmeichal's replacement and we've come nowhere near it. VDS could only have been a one-season stop gap so the search is still on.

we've found him it's just that Fergie wouldn't buy him.. Paul Robinson is the answer.. i never liked the signing of VDS in the first plae and would rather have stuck with Howard.. having seen VDS at Fulham he never looked United quality

another chance to catch up on Chelsea goes begging and now it looks like Liverpool will get second

can't see anyone beating Chelsea to the title next season either

what do you make of the Mikel saga ?

Re: [Merged] The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season

i think what's happened is some agent has got hold of him and told him you can make more money here.. this place is better etc etc.. all the agent cares about is if he goes to Chelsea the agent will get more money... no one in this case from United.. to Chelsea to Lyn Oslo actuaklly care about the player and he's just being treated as a piece of meat

he's had his head turned by an agent and now wants to play for chelsea but they hever approached the club in Oslo and put in a bid or asked for permission to talk to the player.. Mikel has already said he has met Mourinho which is illegal under the current transfer rules..

can't really see him getting a game at Chelsea and he could end up for no career already at the age of 18 now

would be interesting to see when exactly he got an agent and when he employed him from.. i'm sure it's from after he signed for us

i'd like to see that but then we aren't whiter than white in this as we signed him with only the player in the room and our lawyer.. Lyn Oslo are just as bad as they signed in pro at 18 and then sold him to us a few days later

would like to see Chelsea get fined but there is talk of them getting banned from signing players and docked points etc but really all they have done is the same thing everyone else is doing

if you are the manager and an agent rings you up and says do you want to talk to Rooney would you really say no i can't do that as the club haven't said i could..

I'd say that's probably the fairest thing to do.

Glen Roader has taken charge with Shearer as his assistant

think they will end up with Sven in the summer so if they don't go down this season will get relegated next one instead :D

Football Manager the only job where you can get sacked for being rubbish and get a several million pound pay off

Not true. Look at any senior Ntl manager ;)

(or in fairness any other senior manager in large companies)

Being a long suffering Newcastle fan I think with Souness we may have made relegation this season. We have played with no plan or cohesion as a team for over a year. hopefully the team can put a system together to at least get the best out of each other. As for this sven thing, huge amounts of passion from us the fans, and Mr icy! Gets in more bother than the players and we know all about that.
As for the VDS dilemma, the several combination used this season in defence by Sir Alex have all fell short of previous teams standards and do not help any of the keepers that Man U go through like hot cakes
Geordies for the cup

To be fair, Souness has suffered from a hideous amount of injuries to his first choice eleven this season. Unfortunately, seeing as he then persisted in using Boumsong and Bramble as half of his defense (or Bobo and Twinkles), it's no surprise that Newcast United Comedy Club have lurched from one crisis to another this season really.

Yes the injuries have been terrible, and I have tried to take this on board, but in the end we look like eleven strangers when playing. We have been calling bobo and twinkles, "laurel and hardy". First time they didn't make me laugh.
When you look at other teams with injuries ie; Wigan, it makes you wonder.

What's wrong with Sol Campbell's head? I know his father died, I know the rumours by Spur fans that he is gay, I know his brother is (was) in prison, I know that the 50-year old decorator left him and charged him 70,000 quid for her services. But all these are old news. He got Dido as his girlfriend. Is Dido his current problem? Every body keeps telling his "head is spinning", his "mental health" etc etc etc what's wrong with Sol? why is he sad?

Well, I hear that "the News of the World" has a dossier on Sol Campbell. They confronted him with the "evidence" and they are planning to publish it on Sunday. Allegedly they have "evidence" that Sol is gay.

He must have been 'on loan' when he fathered that child - Wenger is usually in the 'back row' of a different team, according to the whispers in North London.

i think alot of that is just a load of old rubbish from rival fans.. we should out "**** down you ***" to wenger when he comes to OT but i don't believe a word of it..

i'm sure the Sol rumours are prob the same and are meant to have been started by Spurs fans to get back at him.. the so called "proof" the papers have is prob photos of him going out for a night out with his friends and sitting in a pub

TBH, I'd really like to know what the NotW's problem is at the moment, because they seem to be on a campaign to balls up any and all of Englands World Cup preparations. I'm no fan of Arsenal (and I couldn't give a hoot about what Sven gets up to), but why the hell does that paper persist in printing / attempting this nonsense in a World Cup Year?

As I said earlier in this thread, the most annoying thing is that, while they'll be happy to print all their flags and stuff in May and June, who're they going to blame if the team balls it up becuase of all this crap going on? You can bet your house on the fact that they won't be taking the flak - they'll just find somebody else to blame. It's about time they shut up, and just got behind the team.

Yup. One of the happiest days of my life was when they got put out against Brazil the last time.

Walking through the centre of Leicester on my way to work with a huge smile on my face was fun.

I only wish I had a kilt and Brazil top on. (and some running shoes!)

Well said Nugget :tu:

The NOTW seem to be on an anti-England world cup campaign at the moment. First it was Sven, now it's Sol Campbell.Who's next ? Frank Lampard, or maybe Steven Gerrard ? Hell NOTW !! why not take a pic of locals at a well known gay bar in London and superimpose the entire England teams faces on there. That way we can be home after the first week, and you'll get exactly what you want
