Netflix are making a series called Wednesday, about the daughter of the Addams family.

CBS are looking at a third FBI series to be called FBI: International.
They currently have FBI: Most Wanted (which I like) and just plain FBI (which I gave up on).

Kate Kane returns to Batwoman but not as Batwoman.

Quote:

Batwoman has a new Kate Kane.

The CW's superhero drama has cast Wallis Day to take over the role that was established by Ruby Rose in season one.

As revealed at the end of Sunday's episode, the character of Kane was revealed to be alive yet unrecognizable due to injuries she sustained in a plane crash at the beginning of season two. She is shown bandaged and being held hostage. The British-born Day (Krypton, The Royals) will play this "altered version" of Kane moving forward.

The Euromillions is £107m on Tuesday. I would love to give him a blank cheque so he can get all the series' creative team, directors and producers back to do whatever they want without interference from MGM or the networks. SG1 and Atlantis are absolutely fantastic and more can only be a good thing.

Much as you may want MGM out of the way they own the franchise. No MGM, no Stargate.

Re: Science Fiction, Fantasy, and other TV Snippets

They can "own" it but I just want no interference. You hear stories all the time of networks or distributors butting in and changing story arcs of season finales. I want the team to have complete autonomy and MGM can handle the distribution side of things. There are so many franchises (e.g. Marvel) that can serve as the perfect example. Leave them to do their thing and you shall reap the rewards.

Marvel’s not such a good example.

All continuity in the MCU is tightly controlled by Marvel Studios. That’s why Kevin Fiege’s name is all over everything, and has been from the outset. Marvel Television’s own record was less than stellar ... Agents of Shield is very much the exception that proves the rule, with Cloak and Dagger, Agent Carter and Inhumans all stuttering thanks to Marvel Television’s difficulty in maintaining control of either the production process, or creative input.

Marvel Television no longer exists, and all new TV output for Disney+ is managed directly by Marvel Studios, with Fiege as executive producer. Which is why it’s so good.

How does that make your point for you? Marvel Studios is an absolute behemoth, worth $4 billion the day Disney bought it. It's about a gazillion miles away from what you're asking with regards to Stargate, which appears to be that Michael Shanks and his mates be allowed to re-start production on a property owned by MGM, a studio of of comparable value to Marvel, without significant oversight by the studio.

What would be the chances of Robert Downey Jr being allowed to produce an Iron Man prequel TV series in the MCU without close oversight from Feige and his staff at Marvel Studios? Absolute zero. The Marvel films, and the new Marvel TV shows, are a runaway success because Marvel Studios is firmly in control.

That, incidentally, is not a pitch for the studio system, or to claim everything a major studio does is always better than anything produced or exec produced by an actor with a personal stake in a project. Far from it. I just don't recognise the categories you're sketching out here. Marvel Studios' MCU project works because the person in creative control is exceptionally good at what he does. Marvel Television had inconsistent levels of success because the same level of vision and control did not exist there.

Stargate, likewise, would not succeed just because the studio that owns the property is kept at arms length, because there's nothing intrinsically bad about that system of production. It very much depends on who the creative lead is, not which office they're sitting in.

yup, with no interference from the networks or Disney and now that it has a proven track record (like with GoT and HBO) anybody would be stupid to interfere even if they could because they know it would be to their detriment.

Only if your point has changed completely from when you said:

Quote:

On Wandavision, Falcon and the Winter Soldier and everything else going forward, the studio that owns the property *is* the team making the shows. Your vision for Stargate separates the studio that owns the property (MGM) from the team making the show (Gekko Corp, or whoever).

The point of confusion here appears to be the fact that Marvel Studios is no longer an independent entity, but is owned by Disney. I'd suggest that's an irrelevance here because Disney only relatively recently acquired Marvel, which was doing just fine developing the MCU beforehand, and because Disney is not interfering in the process now either. That does not, however, make Marvel Studios equivalent to the minor production company that made Stargate SG-1.

The rumourmill is strong on this. Here's the latest.

Quote:

According to one of our trusted and proven inside sources, the studio wants Kurt Russell to come back for a new Stargate feature film. Our source also says that the studio is hoping that this would kick off a cinematic universe that would include both movies and television shows. We were not able to clarify just how substantial or recurring Russell’s role would be in this newest iteration of the franchise. We aren’t sure if this would act as a way of passing the torch to a new generation or if the plan is to try and have Russell be a central presence in this new arm of the property. All we can confirm is that the studio definitely wants Kurt Russell to be a part of the new Stargate project.

Re: Science Fiction, Fantasy, and other TV Snippets

Information is being teased about the new John Wick spin-off series:

Quote:

Known as “The Continental,” the show will be a prequel series likely centered on a young Winston, the character played by Ian McShane in the movies. Lionsgate TV boss Kevin Beggs recently spoke with Deadline about plans for the series, and what it might look like even without Keanu Reeves in a starring role. Starz is currently set to host the show.

“We took a lot of pitches, and then the creative team from this obscure little show called Wayne that was on YouTube came to us with their take,” Beggs said. “We were really blown away because it solved a bunch of problems and was super exciting, about a crumbling New York in the 1970s with a garbage strike that has piled up bags of garbage to the third floor of most brownstones, the mafia muscling in on that business, which is why in ‘The Sopranos’ he’s in the sanitation business.”

Beggs said the spinoff series could provide an “interesting backdrop to explore the origins of The Continental, which is famously within the movie franchise the assassin’s hotel in which you cannot kill anyone on the hotel grounds, but of course if you step one foot off you’re fair game, and that’s employed to great effect in many of the plots in the movies. Running all of that is Winston, who is played by Ian McShane [in the movies].”

McShane has confirmed he won’t be starring in the series, but could provide voiceover.

“What we’re exploring in ‘The Continental’ is the young Winston and how it came to be that he and his team of confederates found their way into this hotel, which we have met for the first time in the movie franchise 40 years later,” Beggs said. “That’s the arena. I won’t give away more than that, but Starz really leaned into this take also, and they have been great collaborators. And how we’ve approached this first season is as three essentially 90-minute events which you could construe as a limited series or a limited event series.”

Beggs said that “Keanu is likely executive-producing. Because we’re way back in time, way back pre-John Wick and even pre-young John Wick, that character is not finding his way into the universe.”

It was last reported that Starz wouldn’t air “The Continental” until after the fourth “John Wick” movie which, due to the pandemic, isn’t set to release until May 27, 2022.

Beggs said the franchise has “got such great mythology and such interesting style, and the gun-fu approach of these incredibly poetic stunt esthetics is just out of this world, which is why the movie with Keanu Reeves — who is so amazing in everything he does but particularly compelling as John Wick in our mind — it just cries out to be something in TV. Just like the Marvel Universe and the DC Universe from a TV perspective are incredible opportunities, and that is our superhero franchise in the family.”

Of course they will, why do you think they are mentioning it now? If they weren't going to make a big thing of it they wouldn't have mentioned it at all and would just let it reveal itself amongst the many other characters which we will be introduced to when they all return. By mentioning it now they are saying he is somehow more important than the others.

No, it’s called "representation" - they’re letting people who share those characteristics know someone like them is on the show.

https://medium.com/@Laurenwash/the-i...a-2d006149cac9

Quote:

Imagine the first time when young children see a superhero or an astronaut on screen whose image looks like them. It is 2018, and for some kids, the historic moment of seeing Black Panther was their first time seeing a superhero of color on screen. Better yet, this groundbreaking film which has netted over $900 million dollars, could have been the first time seeing a predominantly black cast with a black director, black costume designers, black hairstylists, and more, actively producing representation in a positive light. Sandra Bullock’s astronaut character, Dr. Ryan Stone, in the 2013 film, Gravity, may have been the first occasion when young girls witnessed both a female astronaut and scientist on screen. The content our society views on screen is supposed to reflect its people, but all too often the entertainment and media industries tend to marginalize people of color, and women, just to name a few. Stories affect all areas of life in terms of how people view themselves, how they live their lives, and how they see others. Some of the content that these industries distribute to the public remains the only form of representation some individuals see, and these portrayals may be accurate or inaccurate. Media depicts stereotypical representations for people of color and women, whether through Hollywood or on the news, as violent criminals, the help, terrorists, submissive characters, highly sexualized beings, unintelligent people, and more. Similarly, there are concerns for Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) populations and depictions of disabled persons. Seeing oneself on screen is crucial because society is not monolithic, but multifaceted.

In other words, you just made the point for us.

Every show must now have a black or coloured person, every show must have an LGBTQ whatever , gotta tick all those boxes now, and of course, you have to constantly promote/preach about it instead of just getting on with the story.

Its complete bollox and slowly destroying many shows, as viewing figures show (think Supergirl, Batwoman).

Of course, its perfectly possible to have variety ['representation'] and not constantly preach about it.
I dont particularly care for the new Equalizer, but I've watched a few, and they dont keep harping on about her colour (or sex) - they just get on with the show (and as a result, its doing quite well).

Forcing minority characters into every show is simply not realistic, the latest figures I could find for the UK were about 3% of the popilation is not Hetrosexual, the last figure I could find for the US was about 5%

Apparently a Gallup poll asking Americans what they thought the figure was says most estimated the figure at about 21 - 24%.
In other words, they over estimated by 4 or 5 times - I cant imagine why they over estimate it by so much .....

Getting back to the subject, I will give The 4400 a chance, but if it turns out to be another preachy pc show then I'll dump it.

Here's some food for thought. When you go shopping at e.g. Asda do you go because you like the range, prices and customer service or do you go because they have just put an advert on tv saying "at Asda 5% of our workforce is LBGT, 15% Black and 60% Women?" I am sure the public would like the know that the place they spend a large amount of their money on every week represents their local community and national diversity as a whole but it doesn't get rammed down your throat at every opportunity.

Here’s food for thought - when you go shopping at Asda, how would you feel if none of the food on offer was what you liked, or what your family enjoyed eating? Isn’t it better than Asda (and other supermarkets) offer a wider range of foods, to cater for diverse tastes; isn’t it good they advertise this wider range of foods, and that way, they expand their customer base, and people who have never seen that sort of food before see that other foods are available, which leads them to (hopefully) understand "different" isn’t strange or frightening, just different…

doesn't work like that. I can tell you from first hand experience that if Asda doesn't sell x amount of something it disappears pronto. They look at £return/cubic foot. They have these lofty ideas and ideals and every now and again you get something quirky and unique coming in, whether it be eco friendly products, "help the farmers" etc etc, they all cost more for doing the right thing, not enough people buy them the products disappear in a flash. All new lines are driven by third party investment i.e. Walkers/Dolmio/McVities paying to do consumer research and monitoring customer behaviours and patterns. The brand names take the risk in investment in launching new lines which they subsidise supermarkets for and if they work out then Asda makes their own brand version of it. They like to flap about product quality, customer service, the environment and everything else but they only do it if it is worth their time and makes them £££ in direct sales or PR.

If a show or story has a LGBTQ+ character or one of colour as part of the story fair enough but if they are just there because studios have to then it can ruin a show. The actor may not be good or suit the character but they need to have someone of that description now.

Take friends for example. If it was made now, there would be one white American, a LGBTQ+, a Latino, a black character etc. Just because and they would keep talk about said trait at every opportunity. Batwoman is guilty of it majorly and its ratings nose dived.

exactly, and that has been brought up many a time over the last few years due to the shows popularity and if they did do it it would be grade 1 shite. Friends is recognised globally as being phenomenal and magical so everyone obviously loves it and doesn't have a problem with it. If it ain't broken don't fix it and don't screw stuff up for the sake of it. You can have a diverse cast without having to make an issue out of it. Grey's Anatomy is the perfect example. They had many black actors from the outset but each person is their own unique character with so many facets that you love them for who the character is and you don't event think about the fact that they are black and that is how it should be. In real life we talk about direct and indirect discrimination in the work place and skin colour or gender identity shouldn't be the be all and end all of a character. It shouldn't matter and should be something that is a non-issue and in the background secondary to the crux o the story. Grey's has gone down hill big time over the last two seasons this, this season especially. They have dealt with their share of topical issues over the years and they have been handled really well and in keeping with a realistic story line. This year it has become less medical drama and more gay drama of the week and extra toppings of OTT mental health issues.

and it would not have run for 10 series and be watched over and over by many that is for sure

Re: Science Fiction, Fantasy, and other TV Snippets

yup. There is a reason why series such as Friends and GoT are so popular and successful; they are pretty much perfect and although when you look back it might turn out that some of the contributing factors weren't planned, were accidents or coincidences, things ultimately worked out. Series like Greys Anatomy, Batwoman and Supergirl have found out that when you move away from your core premise and start pushing your own agenda, your ratings and viewers plummet and you risk cancellation. I had a bit of a whinge about Seal Team a couple of weeks ago but they didn't dwell on it and have actually handled it very well.

What has that got to do with their workforce being black/white/lgb whatever

If Asda didnt stock what people wanted, they would buy it elsewhere.
(In fact, I do the opposite as Morrisons are my main shop, if they dont have it, I pop down the road to Asda).
Who on earth shops at Asda becasue their workforce is 60% Women ?

My metaphor was about representation in food (different types to attract a wider range of customers), not about staffing diversity.

Not my cup of tea but I can see appealing to a certain group of people. I going to group it with the too laid back Librarians and Warehouse 13 cheese.

You'll love it then. I am going to add Pandora and The Outpost to that group as well.

There is nothing wrong with either The Librarians, Warehouse 13, Pandora or The Outpost.
Stop taking digs at shows just because YOU dont like them, you're starting to get very tiresome.

Having watched the trailer above, I still have no real clue what its actually about.
Looking it up, its apparently a revival of a series from a few years ago, simply called Leverage.

Would love to see a Warehouse 13 revival myself and/or The Librarians did not watch the other two. So many have to make hard choices sometimes

Its a Sci-Fi, about (as the name implies) alien invasion of earth.

Production has begun on the final 8 episodes of His Dark Materials (Season 3).

AMC are producing a series based on Interview with the Vampire.

FX are profucing a series called Class of 09, which follows class of FBI agents in the 'near future' where the U.S. criminal justice system has been transformed by Artificial Intelligence.

The CW are apparently working on a Supernatural prequel which will follow the lives of John and Mary Winchester (the parents) and will be narrated by Jensen Ackles.

me too. Some series (like BSG) dont need a reboot but Sliders would benefit from one. I loved it and the series knew no bounds in terms of the stories but the limited production budget meant most of the effects were quite bad. Things have moved on so much and I can't wait to see what they come up with now. I hope they keep the whispering "Sliders" in the intro.

But BSG (2004) was a reboot - I’d rather wait and see, before judging.
