Actually, their trials teams have used Esmaker.com in the past, and use them regularly for customer surveys.

I'm going to say this again, this is not a scam.

I am sure a moderator can confirm this once they have contacted ntl.

Is it anything to do with this, Toto?

if so, NTL would seem to have nothing to lose by trialling it?

I'm glad I asked the question. It seemed initially like a scam but less so the more it went on.

When I followed the link, it just asked for name, email address and telephone number. What use would just that be for a scam?

I'd appreciate some inside knowledge on this though. :tu:

You're right, if this is what ntl are doing they don't appear to have anything to loose, in fact it would seem a win win situation. The ntl customer gets a pretty robust email experience, and ntl doesn't have to store terabytes of unread email :)

I'm sure one of the forum mods will tap a contact for a bit more info.

If this proves to be true then NTL will get a :tu: from me. Might even start to use NTL for email again :D

So basically this would mean paying NTL for the privilege of having Google read my email and display advertisements? I'm not too sure how keen I am on that...

my mistake, forgot about that :dozey:

not entirely sure which ntl are doing but, if they intend on using gmail to host the @ntlworld.com accounts, are you sure google will like it? (ie hosting mail for an entire isp). Or, are ntl just getting people to use it, and report back what they like so they can jazz up their own webmail?

it works pretty well ive been using it for my domain email for a while now :)

now i don't have to worry about losing my emails if my server goes down or how much diskspace im using, i let google worry about it instead :D

also a few friends have started using this to offer email accounts to their forum staff without having to worry about the space/bandwidth constraints :tu:

Then do what i am doing at the moment and pay for a 3 party email service. I can chose to use NTL's service or not, At the moment i chose not to because there email service is pants. I personally don't see any problems with Gmail however some do, Its a personal decision you have to take, Do you use there service or not. I have nothing to hide so i use Gmail as well as my 3rd party provider. The adverts don't get in the way and i am sure Gmail do not have a shed full of people reading the mail. My mail is boring and there welcome to it but i guarantee it will send them to sleep :D

Oh and i am sure the NTL email is classed as free by NTL, Lame i know but there has been a whole thread on the subject here or on .COM cannot remember and cannot be arsed to search for it.

same here, i figure everything else probably scans an email as it travels though the internet so whats the difference of letting a bot scan it to display

if google scanning my emails with a bot to target ads means i get a huge mailbox for free + the ablity to search though that huge mailbox then i'm not complaining.

and they've got a pretty decent spam filter, 1 or 2 slip though occasionally but it seems to catch most of the spam :)

Crikey, can´t keep anyway from this place even on my jollies :erm:

Just to confirm this is NOT a scam. ntl were asking for triallists amongst staff and were mailing a number of customers asking them to trial as well this email thingy, if still in doubt ring CS and they can happily confirm it :tu:

only thing is doesn't google hosted need the mx records to be changed?

can that be done for just an indervidual email address? i thought they were done by domain

Looking at GMail you can add additional accounts to a Gmail account for POP/SMTP access so this is prolly how theyre doing it

:erm: thats to send emails so that they appear to come from the other account.

you cannot simply add an account in google and have the mail turn up there, you need to setup either a forward or change the MX entry so that the email gets routed to another server.

You may very well be able to change an Mx entry for a single email address, i've never tryed it for anything but a whole domain!

Re: NTL want me to try Googlemail????

1) I use gmail in addition to the ntl accounts and my email client (kontact - I use Linux) just pulls everything into one inbox. It also then removes them from the remote inbox.

2) GMail uses encrypted links to the email client so less chance for snooping, other than past GMail and Google themselves.

3) I have a domain and the registrar lets me specify email redirects by user, with upto 3 forward addresses per emain name. I'm sorely tempted to forward all my emails to GMail.

4) If you do you GMail then you can still send emails when not on ntl's network. You do need to authenticate you to SMTP which isn't needed with ntl's as they only let people on their network send.

were not talking about standard gmail we talking about google mail for your domain which actally uses your DOMAIN email account for the gmail service.

Edit: I think i totally misread your post, re-reading it you do make good points actually, sorry!
