Customer uses modified modem, somehow taking a Ubr down. (hey, it's extreme, just think of the damage that could be done though...)

Yes its very extreme, one could say the same could happen to adsl in extreme you could take the exchange down or dslam. Of course it doesnt happen.

Modded modems of the accepted models get registered so ntl arent really gaining anything that side of things by restricting hardware used.

From my experience when i was on service and repair. Customers would still demand NTL replace faulty kit even if its not supplied by NTL. Trust me i have had to deal with customers like that and they always said the same thing. I pay your wages and if you dont repair or replace it i will go somewhere else. So the simple answer for NTL is to supply the cheap stuff and then cover the cost if and when it breaks.

If they demand it simple solution is you give them a cheap 250 or tell them to pay for replacement of their superior model.
