Re: Telewest completes speed increases

I'd be happy to pay £17.99 for my 2MB broadband instead of the current £24.99.

NTL have just announced price changes knowing that merger with Telewest was proceeding, why not adjust prices to the same level at the same time? Don't see that different staff and computer systems can be a valid excuse for not doing so since price changes are already taking place.

Other companies such as eclipse offer unlimited 8Mbps Broadband for £14.99, Be offer unlimited 24MB for £24.
Carphonewarehouse offer 8Mbps broadband for £20.99 with all the extras. So yeah ...

You seem to have glazed over the extra 128k upload on ntl's service.

Eclipse's 8mb offering is null and void, for one reason that they wish to reinterpret the English language with the word unlimited and for a second that for 14.99 you get 2gb a month...(I think you should read their product pages first).

Be are niche, good product but poor coverage, so it can't really compare.

Carphone Warehouse...well they are unproven.

As it is now ntl offer a pretty good product compared to the competition. Of course though, it could be cheaper.

It's the fair usage policy that beats you up in this one ;)

How does the usage allowance for Home Broadband work?

Quote:

Everything you send or receive over the Internet is bits of data, whether it's a web page, an email, a music track or a video clip. Each element of data is a different size and is measured in Kilobytes (KB), Megabytes (MB) or Gigabytes (GB). The average email is around 4KB, a digital photo around 1MB and a music track around 5MB (1MB=1024KB, 1GB=1024MB).

You can use your broadband connection freely up to the published usage allowance (2GB, 10GB, 20GB or 40GB, depending on the product you have selected). Once you have reached your allowance, you can choose whether to purchase additional GB or to have your download speed reduced to 256Kbps until the start of your next billing month.

Usage is charged for each additional GB or part thereof at £1.75 per GB.

Yes, you're right, their Home Broadband has a 2, 10, 20 or 40GB usage.
The link i posted which is unlimited is their Evolution Broadband which is unlimited, subject to a fair usage policy.

Oh ok. Still the different bands of pricing for the same speed suggests they are doing something to peoples connections.

As it is now for the price people on ntl are paying now that isn't the case.

I dont like the idea of 8meg+ for sub £20 etc or even sub £30. I think selling a product too cheaply can only mean one thing a poor poor internet connection. The longer ntl stay how they are the better I can only see things going downhill if they even attempt a universal 10mbit product.

As for telewest yeah they the same company but still operating under the name of telewest so will be keeping their independent product line for now and maybe for a while, I probably wont be expecting things to merge until all the rebranding to virgin is completed. Telewest are opening up 2nd downstream channels on their ubrs which probably explains how they are able to offer better download products.
