Re: Easynews Speedup! Doh!

Right, signed up for Easynews, but downloads Max out at 20kBps on a 1 Meg line, could someone advise me as what to routh through?
I cant post a trace as it goes long rather than table like! But there a 10% package loss right at the end.

532499 bytes were transferred to your computer in 4.34 seconds. Your max throughput is 122.65 KB/sec.

Thanks,
Sahil

I'd suggest you don't choose a news provider that overcharges like they do. Sorry I can't help, but their deal is awful.

I'm interested in saving money, I know EN are not the cheapest but I didnt think their deal was that bad. ( http://www.newsgroupservers.net/ )
Please can you expand on this?

Cheers,

See my first post that started this thread !

Do a trace via this link http://www.easynews.com:81/slow/trace.phtml

And set your route via this link http://members.easynews.com:81/route/
(Or click the normal route link but then click again on 'port 81' )

Also read the text on that page (especially the bold text). Try different routes and see..

Also make sure you download any way except via HTTP port 80.

(And IMO avoid NNTP because of the ascii overhead but thats another discussion ..)

Also see this page for searching http://members.easynews.com:81/global4/search.html
Or preferably this one
https://secure.members.easynews.com:...l4/search.html :)

If i remember correctly inbound traffic from easynews comes in over LINX which I think remains saturated at peak times to ntl.

Cheers Lordy, maxing out now!
Also, when downloading using Reget, should I just download the 1GB oddZip file from Zip manger? I heard somewhere that its better to split it, what do you guys do (cause downloading a 1GB Zip only to find its corrupt would be a bit annoying).

Once your are downloading on port 81, using a download manager, you shouldn't have any problems with corruption. If you do, check your hardware first.

Hi Chrysalis, From what I've seem Inbound traffic comes in different ways using diffrent routes. The LEVEL3,AT&T & QUEST routes are generally the best followed by UU. The rest (including the default route) are a lot worse for me.

Agreed, LLNW is the worse from here, less than 20k :(
Seems from Easynews routes we can get a good idea of NTL's peering arrangements, and some of them are awful.

I wish Easynews would get a Savvis route as well, I can get over 700k from a single stream from US Savvis routed sites which I'd guess is about the limit for the distance.

Tweak your receive window a bit, I can max my 940k from west coast US :)
