Thanks for the suggestions...

MAC filtering (MAC address control) is disabled, and all security is disabled as well (none of my neighbours are techy enough to find my SSID... so I've plugged for no encryption and subsequently better speed...

I totally agree that the MTU failure is what the 360 uses as a generic WLAN connection failure - but try telling that to the 360 tech support desk... lol

On my Router's Internet/WAN settings, it's running as DHCP Client. Checking the DHCP Server settings (which come under "LAN Configuration"), it says IP Address Lease; Start IP 192.168.1.100, End IP address 192.168.1.150, Lease time 3 Days.

And the other main option in there is "Fix IP Address for a Device" (Options being: Select from devices currently connected to this Access Point, which is selected over "Enter MAC address Manually"), and finally DHCP Server is Enabled.

On the next tab (UPnP... which just a guess means Universal Plug and Play?) is also selected as "Enabled"

Does any of this info spark any thoughts?

On my router settings (Linksys WRT54G) on the basic set up page there is an option for MTU - this is set to automatic. Is the setting on your router set to auto?

Nope - there are no settings on my router config for MTU at all! I've looked everywhere.

Also, as I mentioned, the MTU test on the console passes sometimes. funnily enough though, it only passes when I reboot the router.

After its passed the MTU test though, it gets to the 'xbox live' test and tells me there is a download to update. and when I click 'ok' it fails after a few seconds (update failed to download).

this makes me think though that the xbox is actually connecting to live, as otherwise how would it know if there was an update?

Take the router out of the equation by connecting direct to STB.

There is nothing else that can be done until you have done this.

1: you shouldnt have to clone the routers mac address on the 360, remove the alternate mac address.

2: if it sometimes passes the MTU stage and then fails at the update it is a firewall issue, can you put the 360 in the routers DMZ if the router doesnt give you the option for this then remove the router from the equation.

Ok Gang,

I've now connected the xBox 360 directly to the STB, and it works fine!! I did have to clone the MAC code from the router (this is not the 'routers' MAC, but the MAC of the laptop which I used to 'register' the Broadband connection with NTL).

I tried direct connection to STB with the 360's own MAC, but it didn't work (i.e. it failed to assign an IP).

As soon as I added the alternative MAC to the 360 as above - it worked perfectly.

The bad news is, it now means there definately is a problem with the router part of the equation...

The BT Voyager 1500 *is* xBox live compatible according to BT... so it must be something to do with the settings?!!

As "MTU" is a test of Packet data transmission, I thought it may be something to do with the fact I had the STB->Router wire extended through a CAT5 Coupler (i.e. I thought I was getting packet loss through overly extended crossover cabling... even though coupled we're still only talking about 25ft in length). This made no difference, and the 360 still failed the MTU test despite being only a foot away from the router.

Gooner - good shout re: DMZ, I'll give that a try... and I noticed that there is an option in the Router config to block intrusions... so I may try disabling that to see if that helps....

Ok...

- Disabled the Intrusion detection

- Removed the Alternate MAC from the 360

- Added the 360's unique MAC to the DMZ

Still doesn't work.

- Rapidly running out of ideas!!!

Not wishing to sound like I have a defeatist attitude (after a near week of trying to get the frickin 360 to connect wirelessly to Live... but perhaps you guys can start recommending the best Wireless Routers to use connected to NTL STB's, which are great for use with xBox Live??!

I'm about to see exactly how far a BT Voyager 1500 will fly when drop kicked through a brick wall...:mad:

I think the favoured router is by Linksys - Wireless G Model WRT54G. I've got this and can recommend it.

Well then chaps... I sucked it up and ordered the following:
Linksys WRT54GS-UK 125 Mbps Wireless-G Broadband Router with SpeedBooster :Yikes:

I plumped for the 125 Mbps version - but do any of you reckon that will make a shade of difference? After all, my Broadband connection is only 1 Mbps.......

What's the point of such a high speed? Any one know??

Tons of people on CF are raving about the Linksys... so I hope it does the trick!!

I just hope it works with my xBox 360!!! My Voyager 1500 *should* do!!! BT even say so, and is the one they recommend for wireless xBox Live!

If you've already got BT Broadband then all you need is a modem/router with a spare Ethernet port (or a wireless router if using the Xbox Wireless Networking Adapter). If you ordered BT Broadband recently then you may already have this (e.g. the Voyager 205).
If you do not have a compatible router, then you can order one of the following from the BT Shop:

• BT Voyager 240 ADSL Router (with 4 ethernet ports)
• BT Voyager 1500 Wireless Router (with 4 ethernet ports and wireless networking)

So to summarise everything I've tried:

There's nothing wrong with the STB because I can connect the 360 directly to it without any grief at all, all the settings on the router's config page look fine, I've tried putting the 360's MAC in the DMZ, I've fixed an IP for the 360 and put the IP in the DMZ, I've taken off all MAC address Control, disabled all Security functionality, checked the Wires, Checked Firmware (and even 'updated' it to the same version just to be sure)....

There just doesn't seem to be a solution! So for anyone who has the same problem and stumbles across this thread... I'm sorry I've let you down... but I've gone for the *hopefully* easy (and expensive!) option of buying a whole new router!!!!!!

I'll let you know if it works out ok when it (hopefully) turns up at the end of the week!!

This speed will be useful when transferring files around your home network (if you have one). eg when using your Xbox 360 to view files on your other pc (using the Media connect software)

So people, resolution found!

For anyone who ever gets this problem, the only thing that it seems that can be done is to get a decent router!!

I simply plugged in the Linksys, and hey presto - 5 minutes later I was on live downloading Mission Impossible 3 HD trailer!

Just FYI, BT, in their infinite wisdom responded to my technical inquiry thusly (Names have been amended to protect the stupid), but I do appreciate their curteous response none-the-less:

The Linksys hasn't vastly improved my home network in anyway, but it looks quite cool, and Live works wirelessly now - so I can't grumble!

Thanks to all for your suggestions, if nothing else, my knowledge of routers and cable broadband has increased exponentially ;)

Hello.
I'm having the exact same problem. I also foolishly purchased the BT Voyager 1500 and am now having major problems connecting to LIVE. I get the message saying i must download an update. After selecting yes, i get the following message "a failure occurred during the installation of the update" then it takes me back to the dashboard grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Is there anyway around this at all or will i have to bite the bullet and buy a new router?
If so can anyone suggest a decent CABLE router that will allow me to connect to Xbox Live?
