If it all works properly...does the wirless link automatically pick up the ip address..just like plug and play or do i need to set configurations for anything....

You will not get the external IP on your computer while it is attached to a router.

The external 80.xxx.xxx.xxx IP is assigned to the router. Everything you connect to the router will get an internal (Local Area Network, LAN) IP address from the router. These addresses typically begin 192. In giving your PC a 192.168.xxx.xxx IP address, your router is behaving correctly.

If you are unable to see web pages, something else is wrong with the configuration, but it's not the IP address.

Automatically detect? Erm where did you set that as I think that's not needed. Also what firewall and how did you turn it off?
As Chris says this isn't an IP issue but we need to get the router set up right.

Re: cant connect with router

so when i connect straight to modem from pc the ethernet ip is 80.XXX. then when i disconnect and reconnect via router the wireless link should say 192.XX or 80.XX because when i go to cmd and type ipconfig i get the ip address as 192.XX is this correct?? sorry for being a moron

i turned the firewall off from the windows security centre

Re: cant connect with router

Yep because the PC is seeing the IP of the router and not the modem (and turning the built in firewall is not the problem so that's ok).
Have you actually gone into the router setup yet? If not it may just be something needs setting up properly.
If necessary (from page 15 of the manual I linked to above) you can clone the working MAC of your connection onto the router and work around the problem that way. You do that through the Primary Setup page of the router config.

Re: cant connect with router

why last night when i reconnected the pc to the moden without the router ,did i not get my 80.xx ip address back again...is this just a question of going through the correct sequence (which i thought i did ) and it should detect the 80.xx ip
and lastly what other commands do i need to check things in the "run box"
know about the ipconfig/all but forget the rest to try and get the 80.xx back up

Re: cant connect with router

Because the PC was connected directly to the modem and therefor saw the IP address given to it by the modem. The modem would give it a 80. address because it is known by and registered on the NTL network.
Connect to the router and you create your own little network which the router gives out the IP addreses for which is why you see 192. addresses. (
ipconfig/all
ipconfig/release
ipconfig/renew
or just try ipconfig/? ;)
