Simple - when the firewall/router sees an address on the internal network that is not an internal address, it routes it to the Internet. It simply cannot 'wrap' the request back onto itself - just not sophisticated enough.

But then it was only designed for home/small office use.

Which I can understand. The address is an Internet IP address.... which is how it works when I am away from the Company network.

But when you are away from the network the router is not trying to send messages to itself.

True. This rings true because the same effect can be recreated via Remote Desktop. Works OK externally... use the same settings internally - thing falls over.
