Well I watched the original show and he looked quite alright to me, not like someone with an acute illness, so acute that it prevents him from working. He was alright enough to go out all the time.

Of course, I'm not a doctor. But I remember the show well and the Bardsley clan earn't more in benefits than the other couple that worked full time.

I'd like to have more info, like have they ever worked???
How many kids have they had since they've been on benefits full time??

I repeat again that cases like this make a mockery of our welfare system and takes the focus of the people who really could use our help.

Oh come on. I'm sure pretty much everyone on here has had someone close to them die.
I'm even more sure a few of them have died in pretty traumatic circumstances.

Claiming for 'depression' for 6 years is taking the p**s

To echo Dezzo ... I don't think you need to be a doctor to know what it feels like to suffer trauma or loss and to know how it affects people. Depression is a nasty condition, but after 6 years, how is it that nothing has changed? Is he not having treatment? Has he shown no improvement whatsoever that might allow him to undertake some kind of work? Everyone involved in mental healthcare knows that keeping busy is a good way of maintaining good mental health. Languishing at home for six years is probably the worst thing this man could be doing. Assuming of course that he is still suffering clinical depression, and hasn't rather decided that he is better off being paid by the State for being 'depressed' rather than giving up his sofa-bound existence.

Well in that case if he is refusing pschiatric help then he should be stripped of his benefits, because i'm sure the help is being offered.
But the children have done nothing wrong so they should keep theres, unless your saying they should get jobs :erm:

He looked fairly cheery to me too, sat there in his shell suit, chuffing on Sovereign.

NOt sure about how many children they've had since they've both been out of work, but I think it's at least one or two...

Your statement isn't proved at all - I know of several people who work for the Department for work and pensions and they have stated to me that the system is heavily abused. People who can work should work and as Tony Blair rightfully said earlier this year when he declared war on the sickies (Link to story below):-

Took me a bloody year to get my DLA, one DR thought i was fit enough for work even though i could not walk.

I am on DLA for two reasons

I have aspergers syndrome now when any one of you see me, you won't see it, but in working scenarios and some home ones it comes out.

Some ailments are not visible all the time, this man who claimed 6years for DLA then he must have needed it, with you needing to re-apply every few years..

So back down with the flaming DLA benefit is one of the hardest to get if I had not done my right hip in, likely my Aspergers would not have been recognised.

DO we know why he was depressed, I mean some serious things can play havoc on someones mind?

Depression could be classed as self pity, but could be trama aswell, he could be suffering and forcing him to work could destroy him.

I am in no way sticking up for him but remember this is a cold dark world at times and things happen which we cannot envision and can seriously play havoc on your emotions even for a long time.

If he is geniunely sponging them by all means flame him, but if not perhaps the chap deserves the benefit of doubt.

In my opinion, if your child is that ill - especially from Asthma! you should not be a smoker. Where does all the money they get go? How can they afford to smoke? am I paying for them to smoke?

I get depressed sometimes, just like her husband has. My best friend died when I was 19. And I haven't claimed a days benefit in my life. They are spongers, pure and simple.
there's a difference between being depressed and being clinically ill from depression. although after seeing that program I didnt see any familiar signs of depression - he looked fit to work in my opinion.

There's your sponge-ism - those of us who are ill, or have been seriously ill, would be very hard pushed to get anywhere near those amounts.

Does everyone here realise how long some DLA, Carers' and Incapacity is awarded for? Those of us who have been ill have it only awarded for a year, spongers get it awarded for years at a time. Oh, the stories that could be told of some of those we know - holidays every five minutes. The kid 'suffering' from ADHD - what a meal ticket. :upyours:
