Re: Opera now FREE !!
Wayne, I got all 3 (IE, Firefox and Opera) and now am using Firefox and opera more and more....prefer the use of Firefox as in you got the bookmarks right in front of you but the ease of use of Opera is excellent as well :) I think Opera will be taking off bigtime now since they didged the ads

- best thing is to try it & make up your own mind, 'better' is a very subjective thing, when it comes to browsers, imo ... |

After recently trying Opera and finding that I could not customise it the way I wanted easily (Thanks Basa for your help on that :) ), I have now gone back to Firefox. It was fast, but I just could not get it the way that I wanted it to be. Though, I am glad that they have gotten rid of those damn ads! ;) |

If I understand you correctly, you can do something similar in Opera. Press "F4" to bring up the "Panels" Toolbar, then hit "Bookmarks". This brings up a sidebar showing your bookmarks. |

Without wanting to start a war (either), what is the appeal of Opera (never used it myself, and I don't like FF much)?

Re: Opera now FREE !!
The thing what attracted me to Opera was tabbed browsing. Then i discovered Firefox and never looked back! IE is a distant memory!!

Re: Opera now FREE !!
I have found a browser that takes many of the aims and unrealuised aspirations of Firefox and Opera, and turned them into reality.....pages render correctly EVERY time, and you don't get locked out of sites for having the wrong browser!
It's called INTERNET EXPLORER, most Windows users will find a version of it already installed on their PC! In all seriousness, I quite like Firefox, Opera got too bloated though. But neither browser can render pages as well as IE can...as an average joe, I'm not really interested in standards compliance, only what actually works...and IE does! |

Re: Opera now FREE !!
With all this discussion about Opera v FF v IE, I got to wondering what makes us loyal to one brand ?
I know most will say "Because I like it, I'm used to it and it does all I want", but there is more to it than that. Opera, FF and IE all do essentially the same things i.e. browse the internet, but for me Opera has those little extras I can't do without (or at least would miss like a friend). There are the obvious things like tabbed browsing, mouse gestures and the built in email client (which means I don't have to wait for OE to load) which checks for mail in a time frame I choose, but for me it's the lttle things like when you wish to copy / paste a URL, I just right click the address bar and click 'paste & go' and it does just that, rather than click paste then move mouse and click go arrow. Then there is the 'copy text' which avoids all the formatting, frames, boxes and tables on web pages, you get just the text - neat. I also like the way you can change skins from within the browser, click on 'more skins', you see a preview, click 'install', then if you don't like it you can click 'no' when it asks you if you want to keep the new skin. Opera is almost unlimited it its customisability, with most built in without the need to download and install 'extensions' which might have been written by who knows and may be version dependant. Anyway, that's enough of my sales pitch !! :p: What is it about your chosen browser that keeps you 'loyal'. Please no-one mention Open Office suite - that is mind blowing value and useability personified !! :D |
