Re: Super Slow browsing speeds yet not my downloads?

Sorry to hijack thread, but i'm suffering similar crawling browsing speeds when trying to surft the internet. I've just done a speed test and it's saying;

Section 3: Download Speed Results

Three downloads are tested; one from one of your ISPs servers, one through your Transparent Cache and one through an alterntive cache. This will give you an idea of how capable your connection is. Note: You should take the highest download speed into account.

ntl:World - 1Mb service Server Download:
118KB/s (944Kb/s) - Perfect - running at full speed!

Download through Transparent Cache:
0KB/s (0Kb/s) - **** SERVER ERROR: Timed out receiving data from the Server****

Download through alternative Cache (webcache.blueyonder.co.uk):
0KB/s (0Kb/s) - **** SERVER ERROR: Unexpected error from Server****

I would presume from this that the transparent cache is the problem?? I'm certainly not getting the NTL:World speeds of (944Kb/s), it is because I'm downloading through the Transparent Cache that's causing the problems, and if so, how do you redirect it to dowload from NTL World's cache?

Thanks :)

So far my pc has been fine since I moved proxy but my 2nd one is having problems even with the same proxy as mine.

Do you think there are general problems then with the NTL Broadband Internet service at present?? Some web pages load okay, but then the BBC Sport pages are chronically slow, which they not normally are? Bizarre

I have been struggling to access CF even asked Nemmy to check CF for me.

It looks like NTL need to sort the proxies or shut them off.

A friend has been given IP numbers to use as proxies and this has speeded things up.

Seems NTL are having some severe network problems even with their ADSL customers with hours of downtime. Not good.

The proxies do seem to be getting progressively worse, stubborness kicking in here PLEASE JUST TURN THEM OFF

I know certain people object to ntl using proxies, but whatever is said on this forum about the subject is not going to make a blind bit of difference. Do you really think ntl are going to decomission millions of pounds worth of equipment because a few members of a forum are obsessed with complaining about them? No... course they won't.

If you are so unhappy with ntl's service, as it has been said before... get another ISP!

well they can (1) mark it of as bad investment write it of whatever or (2) go the telewest keep the equipment running but as optional proxies.

Do you think it is just a few forum users that talk about these things, I heard comments from people when talking about the net reffering to NTL as a slow service, I just said nah NTL have a fast network its the proxies masking the capability of the service, half the time they look at me gone out wondering what I am on about then I explain what proxy servers are.

I don't object to using them at all, if they work properly.

Quite right, I wouldn't either, but I would get in someone who knows what they are doing to fix the ones that are clearly not working properly, we cannot all be wrong - they are not working properly, surely NTL want to get what they pay for - just like we do :)

I wouldnt object either but here is why I think they should be shut off.

1 - It is alot easier to fix something that isnt been used, they are gonna be limited what config changes can be made downtime etc. if there are NTL customers depending on it for their service.

2 - It needs fixing now, lets be honest this has gone on too long, the way to fix it now is to shut if off, rather then tinker with it for weeks/months.

Back to surfing at full speed now, through my transparent cache, 960 Kb/s :) I'm still abit unsure about this STB replacement I've got, but I'm going to upgrade to 2MB service soon.

as been said before I dont have that option.

I find it amusing when a isp prefers to ignore problems, and the people who notice the problem they prefer to lose them as customers rather then fix the problem. Decomissioning equipment happens all the time in all types of business, when equipment gets too old or just doesnt work it gets decommisioned its a fact of business it happens.
