Re: Car ploughs through Liverpool FC celebration crowd

I sincerely hope that the injured recover fully, and that the police learn a lesson about crowd and traffic control due to this incident.

Identifying the driver so quickly seems to have quelled any possible violence, locally and nationally.

Last Saturday, due to a rugby final, many roads here were closed to ALL road traffic. Police were dotted around to make sure that nothing like the Liverpool incident could happen.

But I was waiting to meet up with friends who were in the stadium, and I saw many, many food delivery riders racing around on the closed roads at high speed on illegal electric scooters, illegally-modified electric bicycles and the occasional illegal Ebike. The police appeared to have ignored all of them, even when the roads became packed with fans after the match. The stadium had been close to the maximum 75,000 capacity.

Nobody dead at the moment thankfully but two seriously injured including a child. Some reports that the man driving the car had just exited a bar and was trying to leave in his car. Not quite sure how he managed to have a car on a supposedly cordoned off street but there's footage of people remonstrating with him on the adjacent street to Water street. Could be that he just lost the plot and decided to use the car as a battering ram to get away. Whatever the reason he needs serious prison time.

Yes, my suspicion is that he felt entitled to drive down that road for whatever reason (maybe drink, maybe just because he knew the parade had passed and thought everyone ought to just get out of his way). Things turned lively, then a bit violent, and either because he was drunk, enraged or panicked because someone stoved his rear windscreen in, he hit the gas and went out of control.

could be a case of self preservation fleeing from some idiots that's just gone wrong, but then he might be a deranged loony

The chances of him having no culpability whatsoever for things turning ugly prior to him accelerating into a crowd of people are, I would say, extremely low.

Maybe he panicked.

I've seen a clip of it before hand where he tries to back up, hits some people, they start punching the car and then after a bit of that he zooms off.

Get high. Take drugs. Then let others pay for it. Sounds about right. Well done him.

From today's press conference, the road block was temporarily lifted to let an ambulance through.

The driver's been charged with attempted murder so I'm sure he'll get serious time in prison.

Good to hear that the 11 still in hospital are in a stable condition and appear to be recovering well.

It is believed the driver of the Ford Galaxy car involved in this incident was able to follow an ambulance onto Water Street after the road block was temporarily lifted so that the ambulance crew could attend to a member of the public who was having a suspected heart attack.

“As with many large events, with event organisers we planned for all contingencies and this included the implementation of road closures to protect pedestrians and an armed policing presence was also in place throughout the day."

Which might well indicate that his neighbours didn't actually know him as well as they thought?

I can sort of get the panic reaction explanation as to what happened, which does not condone anything and he deserves and will get serious prison time, no question. It’s more a case of how on Earth did he get into that position in the first place? 'Followed an Ambulance’ through a road block and into an obvious crowd? I suppose the drug angle might well explain that though.

Its all very strange, at odds with what kind of person he seems.
Yet as noted, why on earth follow an ambulance through a road block, into a huge crowd.

As far as I can tell he hasn't been charged with drug offences

No, he's not been charged with drug offences.

I've read speculation that some of his actions may have been brought on by PTSD from his time served in the Marines.

It might be that the follow up drug tests were below the legal limits to make the drug driving charge stick. There are two parts to drug driving- driving with drugs in your system and driving while impaired.

If PTSD is going to be used as a defence, this could open up a whole world of issues going forward. PTSD could be used as a mitigation by pretty much any crime committed by a refugee
