There’s iirc four different ways you can store your recovery details and you’re prompted before encryption even starts to do so. As others have said it can be turned off via control panel or command line

It’s hardly the issue of the century

You make it sound like it's nothing but it's one of the in my opinion biggest threats to a PC end user in recent history for those who are not "Tech Savvy"!

Not only does it not ask you whether you want it on or not, it is by "Default" FORCED on when you do a fresh install or recovery, if you do not know it has been enabled then you are going to lose data later down the line, remember Windows is more used by people who barely know how to install programmes never mind being able to find the location, of an Encryption key and how to use or back it up.

It also runs constantly in the background taking up resources potentially affecting the speed of less powerful machines with it's constant "Read/Write" task's, also affecting battery life, CPU lifetime, RAM usage etc.

With the increase in usage on the SSD you also get excess wear on the SSD because you have constant "Read/Write" task's more than usual meaning you are more than likely going to have an SSD fail sooner when Bitlocker is enabled that without it enabled, which also means if you didn't know Bitlocker was enabled so didn't backup your Encryption keys etc, then you lose ALL data on that drive potentially that machine as it may do all drives not just the Windows drive.

The next issue is this update also removes more way's of getting around the "Microsoft we want all your information account" requirement, so not only do they want to force your pc to be less reliable, more power hungry, more damaging to the environment, more wasteful, but they are still trying to find more ways to get your email address to link your details to your individual advertisement associated ID, which they use when they sell your details, your data is worth more when they can put a name and email address to an ID than it is with only an ID saying "This person just looks at car parts" instead of "This person looks at car parts, their name is X and they live in X City, they also like to look at Rings, listen to Rap, RNB, D&B, they like horror movies and sci-fi tv shows, they look at holidays in Spain, France, and America" you should add these adverts to their fakebook account and hit them with them whilst watching YouTube or looking at the news sites.

Now we are hearing about the whole next upgrade to Windows 11 which is just releasing on the ARM based systems using, the new Snapdragon CPU, which is the "Windows 11 Copilot+ Edition" which should spark fear in everyone's mind with what that thing is going to do!

Up to now I know it's looking like it's going to constantly backup all your keystrokes, all your clicks, all the programmes you use, all the videos you watch (titles), all the audio you listen to (titles), every document you open, every game you play etc etc all so that at any point, you can click on the "AI" menu and pull something back from a few minutes ago and it will pull it back exactly how you want it to because it's using snapshots, which is going to fill and kill your storage because it's doing it every 1 second!

Not only that but it will interact with everything you are doing, from telling you how to do something in a game potentially getting you banned for cheating, to how you should change your writing in order to not come across as "Offensive" because someone might get offended if you use the word "Stupid", or they might think you are being "Flirty" because you call someone "Good looking" etc.

Apparently this will be able to be turned off or limited in some aspects, but again for people who don't know how or where to do that, it's a threat to their privacy since you cannot guarantee it will stay local!

It will also when you ask the "AI/Copilot" to do something, contact the Microsoft servers to confirm it's "Ok", so those on limited data plans or bandwidth limited connections will see their bandwidth used up quicker.

Also, if your PC cannot provide enough TOPS "Ai Performance Measurement" then you cannot upgrade/update windows anymore, meaning you have to go and buy a whole new PC or add in a GPU/NPU in order to provide the TOPS required, this is as bad as the EU with the whole "We want you to scrap your car if it's 15 years old and needs new brakes" rule that they want to bring in!

Yes let's all just roll over, say it's not a big issue and let Microsoft force specific requirements on us to use our pc's, why do I need to have Bitlocker on my pc, what benefit is it ever going to provide me? same with a Microsoft account, what benefit is it every going to provide me?

At least Linux is closer to the point that I can dump Windows all together, at least on there you still have a choice about things and still have control over your system without needing to do work arounds.

This weekend is the big test for me. Can I do everything I need to do with Linux.

That’s a very long post and a very long protest

The facts are thus,

1. You’re prompted before any encryption takes place on how to store your recovery data and as before there are multiple ways to store that information.

2. It can be turned off very simply

You don’t like it ? Then as you say use a different OS. But let’s not blow the issue up out of all proportions

---------- Post added at 21:56 ---------- Previous post was at 21:50 ----------

To add

1. Why no bleating about macs with T2 ? Having encryption on by default (no, not file vault)
2. Why no bleating about Android or iOS encryption by default ?

It’s just MS bashing for the sake of MS bashing

It's now hit the news

I know you can turn this off via various means but the question is why should i have to go out of my way to turn it off. It should be off by default and only on once you make the decision to turn it on is it on. What about those who are not tech Guro's and would not know how to turn it off. I don't trust Microsoft and never have, mark my words a year down the line there will be an update that lets them use the data for advertising revenue.

Chilling'

Recall has the ability to search through all users' past activity including files, photos, emails and browsing history.

Many devices can already do this - but Recall also takes screenshots every few seconds and searches these too.

"This could be a privacy nightmare," said Dr Kris Shrishak, an adviser on AI and privacy.

"The mere fact that screenshots will be taken during use of the device could have a chilling effect on people.

Passwords screengrabbed

Meanwhile, Jen Caltrider, who leads a privacy team at Mozilla, suggested the plans meant someone who knew your password could now access your history in more detail.

"[This includes] law enforcement court orders, or even from Microsoft if they change their mind about keeping all this content local and not using it for targeted advertising or training their AIs down the line," she said.

According to Microsoft, Recall will not moderate or remove information from screenshots which contain passwords or financial account information.

"That data may be in snapshots that are stored on your device, especially when sites do not follow standard internet protocols like cloaking password entry," said Ms Caltrider.

"I wouldn’t want to use a computer running Recall to do anything I wouldn’t do in front of a busload of strangers.

"That means no more logging into financial accounts, looking up sensitive health information, asking embarrassing questions, or even looking up information about a domestic violence shelter, reproductive health clinic, or immigration lawyer.""
I am going to be busy this weekend testing Linux, it was going to happen at some point and this is the kicker that has pushed it to the front of the things to do. I will go for ether Ubuntu or Mint.

The answer to why should you have to go out of your way is very simple

You don’t own the software you own a license to use the software. That’s it

Don't worry - once MS enable Recall, you can just ask China for a copy of everything you've looked at on your machine.

Microsoft have opened a whole can of worms with the latest AI Screen shot feature

Quote:

An AI feature that takes screenshots of Microsoft users' laptops every few seconds won't be released next week over security concerns. One cyber security expert described the feature as a "grab and go" for criminals.
Quote:

The delay comes after one cyber security expert told Sky News the feature was a "grab and go" target for criminals.

"With Recall [criminals] will essentially have everything in a single location," said Muhammad Yahya Patel, lead security engineer at Check Point, a cyber security firm.

"It is a one-shot attack, like a grab and go," said Mr Patel.
Quote:

"As a [hacker], the first thing I'd do is go and look at all the screenshots of what you've been doing recently to understand your behaviour," Charlie Milton, a vice president at cyber security firm Censornet, told Sky News.

I am so glad my main PC at home is now running Linux Mint.
