Why would the Democrats put their fingers on the scales for a Republican?

They could present themselves as the reasonable ones getting America moving. They could negotiate concessions of their own. They might simply want to twist the knife in the MAGA tendency’s twitching corpse. Any number of political reasons really.

Given that McCarthy was quite rude about the Dems in the previous session, if they wanted favours they could probably exact a significant price. Although I suspect any suggestion he might have been talking to them might just bring the GOP lunatic fringe back on-side. If they don’t ultimately decide to play king maker and vote for McCarthy they’ll walk away from this debacle with absolutely nothing, which would be politically amateurish. Mind you, if the cap fits I suppose …

15 attempts and sooooo many concessions. Is it worth it to be beholden to so many?

Not a great advert for the West. And I can't think that it increases the Republicans' electability either.

They just need someone who can make America great again to lead them

I was being ever so slightly facetious, because I’m having a hard time understating why you think internal divisions in one party in one county taints the entire concept of western democracy. Perhaps you could elucidate.

Of course. I can just see countries like China and North Korea covering this in a very negative way and justifying that they're better off with their own versions of governance.

I sincerely doubt it will change anyone’s mind in either country.

Well it seems they finally managed, at the 15th attempt.
