I would still recommend using a proper client as the mail is then stored on your machine locally and not subject to deletion by the ISP if you leave.

The advantage of a client is that it can be set to automatically collect all mail from your accounts at regular intervals and put it in their own in-boxes on your PC or whatever you're using. My machine also announces the arrival of new mail through the sound as well as a small pop-up in the RH lower corner of the screen. I have a NTL email address but its rarely used so i don't know if its problematic, its only randomly logged onto now and then.
