20 years or so ago, Flash was a very useful tool to web designers. It could do a lot of stuff that HTML couldn't, and was cross platform. OK, so Java could also do a lot of the same things, but flash was easier, and the player had a much lighter footprint.

But time marches on. Most of the extra features Flash offered over HTML are now offered by the browsers themselves, through HTML 5. This includes (AFAIK) games, but I think the people who would have been the target market for flash games are now playing much the same sort of games on their mobile phones, usually downloaded from the Apple or Google App stores.

The market for web sites with a flash interface (some of which did look very impressive) has, I think largely been killed off by the various legal requirements to make websites accessible to disabled users, and the remainder has been replaced by CSS styles. There is also the fact it's no longer trendy to have an all singing all dancing website, with loads of bells and whistles. People want one that is functional and pretty.. Not one with loads of flash movies playing in the background and Midi tunes on every page.

Then there are the thousands of security flaws. The black sheep of security was previously Microsoft, with dozens of vulnerabilities being found in their software weekly. Then ,they smartened up their act, and the hackers moved on to Adobe, finding Acrobat/Adobe Reader and Flash Player to be particularly rich sources of vulnerabilities. Acrobat and Adobe Reader are still needed, where as Flash Player has largely fallen out of use, so it's logical that Adobe cancel it, and devote resources to securing Adobe Reader.

And it's only the Player that's going. Adobe Flash itself is still around (under the name Adobe Animate), and is primarily focused on HTML 5 generation.

No one called it sad. Just that there is better alternatives out there these days to Flash player that are much more secure and less resource hogging.

Yeah, as soon as I searched it I found one that didn't require Flash.

But I bet that needs a modern browser - one that may not be available on Windows 98 SE!

Win98SE - that's a bit too modern.

Go for MS-DOS or DR-DOS, and if that's too up to date, CP/M :D

I certainly don’t think it’s sad. While there are flash sites I used to love, I haven’t logged on to them in years, and, tbh, can barely remember them.

I don’t have the flash player installed on my home pc. I did have it on my laptop (as part of home schooling my nephew needed to access a flash site) and computers at work, where it was, until this year, deployed by default as some of our internal systems required it.

In short, it was a good technology, but it’s time has passed, IMO.

Adobe Flash Player, the browser plug-in that brought rich animations and interactivity to the early web, has officially reached the end of its life.

Released in 1996, Flash was once one of the most popular ways for people to stream videos and play games online.

But it was plagued with security problems and failed to transition to the smartphone era.

Adobe will no longer offer security updates for Flash and has urged people to uninstall it.

It will also stop videos and animations running in its Flash Player from 12 January.

An open, collaborative project known as Ruffle is working to develop software that can play Flash content in a web browser, without requiring a plug-in.

I expect someone will release a patch that bypasses any flash player date testing.

You can use it, they just won’t support it.

Actually they can. You don’t own software, you have a license to use it. That license usually includes a clause stating that the owner can revoke it.

Especially when it is free and not open source.

Dude111 03-01-2021 04:49
