I was able to rip that fine with ffmpeg.

That did it! Although the Handbrake GUI is a lot slicker these days. Sod going back to command line work again.

If you need to edit or convert your video files I can recommend you try https://www.movavi.com/. There are many tools for converting video from nearly any format to a selection of modern, widely supported codecs.
