However if it has evidence that delivering it online reaches substantially fewer of the people it's made for, then they have a cost effectiveness problem. The BBC also already owns a shedload of broadcast technology and infrastructure and has the expertise in house; it's not even clear that they would have to rent transmitter or transponder space in order to bring BBC3 back because they always have some in reserve. The additional cost in absolute terms is minimal, and the cost per viewer is possibly actually lower.

all valid points but if that is the case then they never should have shutdown BBC 3 in the first place.

Well yes, agree with you on that. It seemed to be a trendy 'young people just watch streaming TV' decision. They have been producing some good output under the BBC3 brand, but very few have seen it. Some of it has gone on BBC1, but at idiotic times of night. Even young people watch linear TV; some of them even pay their TV licence ...

They said at the time they thought it was too soon to experiment with a streaming-only BBC channel but the need to save money was the driver. I think the key justification for bringing it back is the ‘cost per viewer’ and the research evidence that the channel’s reduced reach is reversible if they put it back on broadcast platforms.

No, it’s not. They simply acted too quickly and they only moved the one channel.

Have I stept back into 1950, what sports coverage, match of the day although I suspect it might be you that's gone back in time actually those dramas and documentaries are repeats, like most of their output

Think you'll find 99% of cable tv is repeats, a lot of it originating from the BBC. They are one of the few making new programmes. Some of their award winning BBC3 output has been missed as its been confined to streaming or tucked away late night on BBC1. Taking it off air was a mistake which they now admit.

Bloodlands is not a repeat.
A new series of Line of Duty is coming in March, surely one of the most gripping programmes of all.
I don't follow sport, but there was rugby over the weekend (and last week) and twice recently my BBC viewing has been messed up with important football matches.

Right, enough. Thanks to the BBC3 announcement we now have 3 different threads all discussing the same issue. I have closed all of them.

*All* pointless arguments about whether the future of TV is in linear broadcasting, video on-demand, a mixture of both, or something as-yet uninvented, should now take place here.
