Re: 2019 boxoffice stats
Just realised, the general's league table is just for 2019, inflation or no. :D
Thanks for the all-time top 20 though Den, that's a very interesting list. Some surprises on there. |
Re: 2019 boxoffice stats
l certainly did not expect to see the Exorcist in there although there was a lot of shock value when it was released.
On Furious 7 given it was not the first film in the franchise that was quite surprising. Harry Potter , Disney , LOTR , Star Wars no surprises there. Gone with the Wind given that it was 1939 which was a golden year for old film classics but more importantly it was the start of WW2 and many were looking for a bit of entertainment to lessen the grimness of the situation at the time. Here is a list of some of the films in 1939 which is considered one of the best years ever at the box office. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1939_in_film |
Re: 2019 boxoffice stats
Well that brought back memories.
My father worked part time as an usher for The Odeon in Blackburn (Full time as an NHS electrician) and got myself and older brother in for Dr Zhivago! |

Re: 2019 boxoffice stats
I thought we would take one last look at things before Star Wars comes in after the weekend and blows it all up. I don't know what the forecast was Frozen but I thought it would clear $1.3bn easily but it looks like it has pretty much stalled.

Re: 2019 boxoffice stats
Maybe they left it too long for Frozen 2, I heard that they've aimed it at slightly older children so those that grew up with it would like it, but for example my kids who have watched the Frozen dvd lots, loved it, have no interest in seeing frozen 2, but were interested in Toy Story 4

Re: 2019 boxoffice stats
Star Wars has had a good start with $375m globally which catapults it straight into the No. 22 spot. Cats is going to flop big time, it has only taken $10m with a production budget of $95 and I can't see it catching up.

Re: 2019 boxoffice stats
Not bad for Star Wars, Disney will be relieved. It's third behind the other two but typically trilogies do drop off with each version.

Re: 2019 boxoffice stats
John Wick being a fine exception to the rule
|
Re: 2019 boxoffice stats
As are, imho, Captain America:Civil War and Toy Story 3.

Absolutely

Re: 2019 boxoffice stats
By drop off I mean in Box Office. I also think something like Marvel, where you don't have to have seen the previous films doesn't count. Actual, planned, trilogies are expected to drop off since people who've seen the previous ones won't all see the next one and that isn't made up for by people who want to drop into a series mid-way.

Re: 2019 boxoffice stats
The last update for the year :) Frozen made last push for $50m which I mentioned a couple of weeks ago take jump all the way to No. 3. Star Wars hasn't done anywhere near as wwll as the previous two films. It might take an extra $20m to take the No. 9 spot from Hobbs & Shaw but there is no way it is going to make $1bn and catch up with Aladdin.
I have done a top 52 just so you can see where all the big films have landed. I think it is sad that stuff like Downton Abbey has done better than Angel Has Fallen but that is just my opinion. Good to see films like John Wick, Alita and Jumanji up there. |
