2.4Ghz also has a _lot_ more usage so is much more prone to interference.

Very true, and not just from Wifi. Everything from DECT cordless phones, wireless baby monitors, wireless TV senders (EVIL things that use up a massive amount of spectrum), leaky microwaves, and who knows what else use this frequency.

This has the side effect of meaning that even if you can't see any other wifi networks, there is likely still 2.4GHz interference.
