Automatic speeding fines. :erm:

Freedom of movement is lost if you are an otherwise law-abiding target of the state. Of course, none of this matters until the politics of a nation begins to deteriorate even further than it already has...
Together with tracking your phone, the state will always know where you are and who you're with.

That may not matter at the moment but consider if the UK elects a totalitarian Marxist party...

The road to hell is truely paved in good intentions. :(

Spot on, and why I would not surprise me if at some stage, it eventually happens.

Don't some insurance companies already do this?

And ANPR cameras are now all over the place, not just on motorways. Software could easily be used to log every car they see.

If only the roads we currently use were as well paved.

I don't mind paying my fair share but the resulting monies should be put into actually paying to sort out all the damned potholes and terrible road surfaces that currently impact on traffic.

On the other hand if we could avoid the need for smart motorways I'd be happy but I suspect that even changing the way and amount we pay won't sort out any infrastructure problems.

I'm agaist it for the following reasons.

1. overpriced VED (Road Tax).
2. over priced fuel (taxes).
3. too many pot holes.

The motorist pays far to much tax, tax someone else.
