Most people can actually tell the difference between "one" and "only".

That'll be because your a great thinker as well as a great reader. Just out of interest, you ever worked with offenders because I have, many hundreds of them, from the young ones to drug addicts and none of them were ever put of by the prospect of longer sentences.

I remember an article in the guardian about 5 years ago that led with the headline longer sentences worked under the last labour government but as Ken Clarke remarked later in the piece the were a great many other factors at work and you shouldn't be misled by attention grabbing headlines or soundbites, sound advice imo.
