On a serious note if the hardware is already built in, apart from spitefulness why isn't it enabled?

Interesting that would upset a few people who like to archive recordings for personal use, but do not realise this disabled in the new box!

Indeed - one of several reasons I do not want to 'upgrade' from sky+HD to SkyQ - it hasn't got a scart socket at all!

Nice to see sky aren't the only ones who put connections on their boxes but don't enable their use.

What it really needs is a DVD recorder with hdmi throughput - definitely a market for it!

I suspect that the content providers are stopping that ever happening. I believe that they are the ones trying to eliminate scart; they want a copy protected connection chain.

..and, of course, SCART is SD - do we really need that in this age of HD and 4K TV sets?

Platform providers think WHY does anyone in the 21st century want to archive a SD recording of a programme anymore, there is on demand, large hard drives in the PVR and streaming services!

As a sports viewer, catch-up sucks with only a couple of minutes highlights per match - doesn't do it for me (what would film buffs say if catch-up offered them 4 minutes highlights of a film?)

Large hard drives in the PVR- 1Tb really? Very surprised the drive isn't at least 2Tb to match SkyQ if not 4Tb.

I put 1Tb drives in each of my 1st generation sky+HD boxes many years ago.

Because millions of us don't rush and buy the latest "shiny" that's why. My current tv is nearly five years old and won't be changed until it finally gives up the ghost, last one we got nearly 10 years out of.

Must be nice to have so much money to dispose of expensive electronics that work perfectly well because of a perceived "missing out".

4K content? Never mind that the laws of physics suggest that unless you are sitting about 2 inches from the screen the eye is physically incapable of telling the difference...

...it's all marketing hype, who here who rushed out to get a 4k telly also bought into the 3d hype of a couple of years ago and also rushed out to buy one of those?

Fully agree, 1TB is small nowadays. 8tb is freely available and 12tb have been announced.

How much space does 4k take up :D

I doubt that you will ever be allowed to archive in HD, therefore SD is better than nothing. Unless you are viewing on a massive screen, SD can be quite acceptable. Yes, HD is obviously better, but to refuse to watch something in SD is crazy.

There are a number of TiVo boxes for sale on EBay, are they legitimate?

If they are ok and I bought one would I just be able to connect it and use it?

Basically thinking of sending recording from V6 to the TiVo to be able to use it's scart to copy to DVD recorder (for my personal use only)

Spot on. At typical household viewing distances, it has been calculated that you need a screen 65" or above to see a significant PQ improvement.

However HDR seems to be limited to 4k sets only, and that would be effective on any screen size.

I do use the SCART SD (RGB video) to my DVD / HDD recorder/player and via RF modulator to numerous small SD sets around the house and the TV card in my main PC. It's a useful feature so why deliberately disable it unless it's the will of the content providers?

That is the one thing about the V6 that disappoints me. I was expecting a 2TB version, but it didn't materialise.

1TB gives you a mere 100 hours worth of HD recordings, so record a 22 part series of The Blacklist in HD, and that's virtually a quarter of your disk space taken up.

I've had to get round this by ordering a second v6 to give me 200 hours for HD, plus a DVD recorder, which gives me an additional 300 hours.

So once I get the new boxes delivered next month, my 500 hours of SD recordings that I normally rely on can be 500 hours in HD.

UHD recordings? I don't think I will ever record in UHD because it will simply take up far too much space on the HDD. We may find that UHD content is only accessed via on demand anyway, which removes that particular problem. I just hope that the powers that be permit us sufficient time to watch on demand material in the future. It often takes me a year to watch anything with the backlog of recordings I accrue.
