Funny how students are always anti-Tory, then amazingly when they've finished their degrees and have a few quid they suddenly swing over to the right.

And there's the great socialist Labour MPs, all as bent as any Tory counterpart.

And then there's socialism itself, which has worked so well in every country that has tried it, it is now the leading system the world over.

Trust me, there is nothing more embarrassing than being a Corbyn supporter.

That's not hypocrisy. People's circumstances change over time. Some people stay with their same political beliefs but others will change as they pay taxes, get a mortgage, a pension and so on. I mean the Tories tripled tuition fees and tripe-locked pensions. It's hardly surprising that students are more likely to go Labour and Pensioners are more likely to go Tory.

And then as the self same students get older they turn into Tories, some even become Tory politicians!

Be fair, it was the uni's that tripled the fees, the Tory's and the duplicitous Lib Dem's that went along with it, just took the cap off. ;)

And also reduced the funding for the Universities as well.

When I graduated it was £1,300 per year, people graduating just a few years after then had to pay £9,000 a year. It isn't really fair.

The thing is I would accept the need for a graduate tax. I also am not sure how much the government should pay for higher education. It seems reasonable those who benefit pay for it and the government instead directs money at living grants for poorer students, especially since it's those living costs rather than the debt which would be greater barrier to them.

What isn't right though is that the 'much-needed' austerity is lopsided towards younger people. The triple-lock seems like rubbing salt in the wound. You could make an argument that pensioners should be protected from austerity cuts, they can't really work to overcome it, but to make a policy as expensive as the pension changes isn't justified when things like social care are being cut to the bone. :shrug:

Why did the Uni's triple the fees? Oh, yes, because the government cut (or even removed) most of their other sources of funding.

[/COLOR]I worked at Uni's 9as a member of the Executive Board, so was actively involved in overall, as well as departmental, budgets, when this happened - when the fees went up, all capital monies and other funding (except research grants) stopped.

Universities were fiscally worse off - fees were frozen for a number of years, while costs/wages increased.
