lets put it this way.
If Poundland, Lidl and other 'cheap shops' can sell the SAME product at a reduced rate. Then why cant large chains.

In fact, just tp prove a point. My wife bought a pack of draught Guiness out of B&MS today for £3.95 in Tesco's, this cost £5.95 - whose is making the profit.

Its just sheer greed by Supermarket chains

One of the items, Snot Poodle, was on offer for 50p yesterday (£5.56 per kilo), whereas the King Snot Poodle was £1.32 (£11.58 per kilo).

If they can afford to sell them off that cheaply, and presumably still make a profit, what the heck is their mark-up?

Do the math.

As for chains like B&M and Home Bargains - End of the line products, Limited expiration, Foreign writing, lack of advertising, lack of proper store layouts and equipment thus cheaper running costs and whatever else you can think of, pick one. I can think of many occasions I've picked up a can of coke from home bargains and the back has been in Arabic, not a complaint, just an observation.

He's not the only one that's held that opinion though, the amount of people thinking they're getting a bargain in the poundshop aren't a minority. In some cases they do indeed provide a cheaper choice but as above, a lot of main brand stuff is merely smaller versions. The Marmite one being a prime example of it, showing the best value per 100g is found away from Poundland. Something which applies to a lot of products found there.

Lidl and Aldi have very minimal massive brands in comparison to major supermarket chains so they're really irrelevant to the argument. I think Lidl sell Pepsi at 25p per can. This is merely the Home Bargains and B&M Scenario.

The outcome is simple.

Poundland isn't as great as people quickly assume. Home Bargains and B&M are great shops if it suits you, there's no denying that, just explained the reasons behind their pricing, they cannot offer the same space and quantity as a supermarket though but I find myself in them quite often. Toiletries are dirt cheap in there along with many other products, the odd arabic scribble on the back shouldn't bother anyone. Expiring stuff is always at least a month away too.

The thing with the B&M's and Home Bargain's of the world is that it is always a gamble that they will have what you want from one week to the next ,as you said earlier most of their stock is end of line bulk buys or close to expiration date and once that stock has been sold it may take a few weeks or even months to get some back

Yep, that's why it's inconvenient for use if you're a shopping list type. I couldn't complete a weeks worth of shopping in there. It's more of a drop in when I'm in the town sort of deal. I'm not the type to dodge around all over the place for shopping either. If I fancy fresh fish I'll do my entire shop at Morrisons, same applies to specifics at Asda and Tesco.
