It is high time something was done, no other user of the road or pavement gets to take the urine quite like they do, I'd suggest for those over 16 to have to pas some sort of proficiency test that allows them to get 3rd party insurance and....

Still think as a nation we should be able to do something, how do other Countries manage?

Actually I think you'll find it was EU funding that paid for them.

Cyclist was a Class A knob.

Just recognise you're wrong apologise and move on.

The Police should have given him a ticket.

Cyclists should have 3rd party insurance if over 18, and should have a licence if using public roads.

There will be cyclists out there that have never been tested in any way to be fit to cycle on the road in traffic.

I don't especially dislike any road user and in my neck of the woods everyone seems to mainly get along quite well, although being semi-rural common sense in the lanes does prevail, I have no issue personally with 'it's my right of way so i'm not moving' I just give way as necessary, and so does everyone else.

Too many people seem obsessed with their 'rights' than anything, that coupled with the 'professional victims' you know the ones, equipped with multiple cameras, and then proceed to cycle erratically proclaiming to all unfortunate to encounter them that they've now got you ON CAMERA and they'll be reported to the POLICE

Guys like that bellend from Bristol who used to go out of his way to have some encounter or another, so he could upload it on Youtube and feel good about... well I'm not sure what, but evidently something. The guy who ran down some bint on a shared cycle foot path but it was her fault because 'she was in his way' despite the fact he was going like the clappers on an electrically assisted bike.

I cycle too as well as drive a large car, and I've never had any incidents, but then I'm not really looking for any, perhaps that's the difference.

Re: Police officer in bizarre row with cyclist for not using superhighway

Thanks to the excellent advice here I have changed my cycling technique. I used to jump red lights, ride on the pavement etc but I've put all that behind me. I now cycle 100% within the law and it is great fun.

The advance stop box is a favourite. I filter to the front and whereas previously I'd jump the light and get out of the way of motorists, I now sit there, in the middle. When the light changes I often don't notice it straight away and as it takes a while to get up to speed sometimes only one or two of us get through the lights. In the rush hour.

Luckily I don't need third party insurance because I'm covered by motorists' insurance. I do think though that motorists should have additional training so that they are qualified to protect more vulnerable road users.

I have even bought some lights. It's legal to have them set to flash these days and if you get the angle just right it's possible to 'strobe' the faces of oncoming car drivers. Best way to ensure they see me eh?

I do all the hand-signalling stuff too. It's a bit precarious with all the potholes around but I know drivers don't mind the erratic unsteadiness this has on my riding.

I smile at motorists too as I know I'm doing what they want. Thanks all!

That's the thing that was overlooked in all this and people will die because of it. Even something as simple as hailing a cab creates havoc no especially if the person hailing is in a wheelchair and here in London if the queen pops out both sides of the road now need to be shut along the route. I struggle to believe these things weren't thought about.

Oh l do like the Arthur hates cyclist rant. I cannot hate cyclist's, as l cycle in my job.

I firmly believe cyclist need educating on the roads, and they should be fined for cycling on the pavements {which is a fine] and also for going through red lights.

Some are a danger to themselves.

They don't need educating now, that's the whole reason behind the super highway and junction widening, so any idiot who can barely ride a bike can have a go in a global metropolise without the need for silly thinks like training. Sod everyone else including other cyclists as long as that div can have a go that's all that matters, doesn't matter the super highway is in the wrong place and creates havoc

I don't dislike anyone else on the roads..provided they follow the highway code..and I don't mind cyclists provided they don't blast up from behind me on the PAVEMENT and pedestrian only areas..

I do however hate bad, dangerous and illegal parking.

Nor me. But it's a jungle out there. Car drivers are the hyenas; a dispassionate pack with rabid individuals. Motorcyclists are warthogs; the hyenas don't fancy a one to one with warthogs who fight back and can catch them. Cyclists are at the bottom of the food chain. We are harmless little hamsters peddling away in circles until we are set upon by the predators
