mmm looks like a prop from 'Blakes 7'.... But what exactly do these top end routers do ? Surely they can't give you speeds faster than is being provided ? Guess I must be missing something here...

Basic "precepts" still apply to both so if as you say you genuinely don't have a clue... then in both cases you clearly don't need either analogy?

Better speeds at longer ranges. There's more to a router than just what WAN speed it supplies, there's things like how many connections it can handle, how well it can port forward, act as a VPN, File server, etc.

These days, they're effectively mini servers.

as many of them have usb3 ports and can act as file and print servers one of the things you'll find them benchmarking now are the read and write ntfs speeds to external hdds. Some people who are very black and white might say that you shouldn't use a router for that and it should be used for what it is, but for those who do want the extra features it is definitely useful information to know because you would be ****ed if you bought one to only find out that it is rubbish. The perfect analogy would be when people were buying Linksys routers a few years ago (it might have been the E2500) which had "gigabit" ports, but the wan to lan throughput was 94mbits :rolleyes: This is the kind of stuff that is good to know.

Apart from tri-band wireless, the new in thing is mu-mimo wireless. It is definitely the way forward as wireless technology continues to develop and get better and better. Everything will end up being wireless and we will want increasingly stable connections at higher speeds.

If you're as crazy as me I would happy recommend the MikroTik RouterBOARD series routers. You can pick one up with WiFi fairly cheaply from LinITX, though for fantastic WiFi I would recommend the Ubiquiti Unifi access points.

I will second the Unifi stuff, but I would suggest you only bother to look into Enterprise grade gear if you require more than one AP and are willing to spend the time setting it up (though the Unifi stuff is a doddle).

Hey Everyone

The birthday fairy is going to get me a new router in the next few weeks. I've been pretty happy with Asus offerings to date but think I may give Linksys a go (I know the General will be happy ;)).

I'm not too bothered about tri-band - maybe next time, so I've been looking at three possibilities:

WRT1900ACS (possibly WRT1900AC)
EA7500
EA6900

Anybody got any comments? Or even suggest other makes/models?

absolutely dude, I think the EA6900 is the must have router atm just like the EA4500 was a couple of years ago. Pretty much perfect all rounder.
