I believe the adage is - if you're putting new cable in (walls, floors, etc.), go Cat6A. If you've got existing Cat5E, its not worth ripping it out for Cat6a.

I assume you mean the SHUB.

I cannot see how this could possibly work as per the OP's requirement for multiple-device connection. No NAT, no routing, one IP address as assigned on the WAN side of the modem.

You are correct. I don't know why Hom3r suggested turning the hub into modem mode. You still need a router.
