The thing that annoys me about this carrier bag thing is inconsistent priorities.

The Taxpayers' Alliance said the "shopping tax" will add £67 to the cost of living per household in England over 10 years.
over 10 long years!!
£6.70 a bloody year!!

when you got things like bedroom tax at a minimum of £7280 over 10 long years.
£728 a year!
who bloody cares about £6.70?

Adzi, well done. You have it. I knew it was true.

I am just waiting for some big store to say, we will not charge the 5p. Don't get me wrong but if you pay the 5p the government get money in vat.

I have no objections in 5p for a large bag. And yes, Hugh, l stuck the pens in my pocket ha ha

So Dave isn't doing it to save the planet then. he's just doing it to raise millions of pounds in VAT?
The man is a deceiving con artist.
Protest against the 5p charge. don't let him get away with treating us like idiots!

I have 2 collapsible crates in my car, and a fold-able Thermos bag. this solves the problem.

Unsourced image on the Internet ≠ truth...

If it really was illegal, do you not think one of the retailers in Wales (who have had the charge for years) would have challenged it?

Re: The 5p bag charges...

Yup. Or Scotland. Or Northern Ireland.

I can find *no source* for this nonsensical claim aside from that Facebook ( ) image, which itself appears to be a reader's letter or something judging by how it's written and of course the bit at the top that says "HAVE YOUR SAY".

People really need to stop believing every image they see on Facebook etc...

They'd be the sort of people who drive through farm gates into fields, or worse, because their sat nav told them to... :nutter: :D

Known about it for a long long time now. I try to remember to take a bag with me when going out but sometimes if I pop in on a whim I used to get a carrier bag. Don't see why people can't get it into their heads that you DON'T get charged for a bag if you take your own carrier bag into a shop with you.

Sainsbury's have now introduced better bags for the 5p charge, alongside the existing 10p bags. The new 5p bags will be replaced if they break same as the 10p bags.

Personally I think it's better than charging 5p for the same basic bags as Tesco and others seem to still be doing as it should encourage their reuse.

When Kwik Save was open years ago they used to charge for bags then (well for the better ones), remember as a kid 3 or 5p they were.

In Scotland anyway the cheap Tesco 5p bags are now thinker like they used to be. Not quite like the Sainsbury ones.
