Indeed, General Maximus Addicted, you were. Changing the tap port will raise the modem's transmit power and place its signal higher above the noise floor. Removing the attenuator will compensate for the drop in received power.

Bad install. Adding an attenuator or anything else onto the back of CPE should be the absolute last option.

Going forward those forward path attenuators will be phased out, as its attenuation range is 65-860mhz. When vm go to a 85mhz+ return path and 1ghz+ forward they won't be any good

In an ideal world where there are more tap points than customers, in reality we dot have the luxury of moving a point in the cab without moving someone else (creating a fault for another customer) so I will always choose the attenuator and leave the signal +5ish to compensate if someone bumps my customer up or down

Sadly if everyone always chooses the attenuators you end up with a bunch of customers on the wrong tap with attenuators to compensate.

That's probably about all you can do now. Putting drops onto the right taps for their distance would break their service as people put them on the wrong ones and used attenuators.

Going to be epic to see what happens when the networks start running on 5-85MHz return and 105-1003MHz forward. Will generate a bunch of service calls from bodged installs.

A service techncian can only fix one customer, there needs some investment to disconnect all dead drops but sadly it never happens.

Will people with FPA not just have one upstream at say 48db but the other 3 will be 38db?

what about customers with simulators and equilisers? Are they botched installs?

Interesting ......
For a long time I had around 0 to +1 db DS levels, but "one day" they all dropped to around -4.5 to -5db. I suspect my connection was moved in the Cab?
However, I've since noticed I have a 8db FPA fitted in front of the TV/SH splitter and I've often thought of removing this.
But, I would be worried it would affect the TiVo signal levels as well as the SH.
Maybe I'll just leave well alone ....... :)

If the slope is perfect, sure. Either way the customer is at best within 2dB of dynamic range window violation which is not good.

Given upstreams on the D3 platform start at a centre of 25.8MHz it doesn't seem unlikely there'll be a variance of >2dB between that channel and one in the 70s without adding an extra 10dB.

That adding kit onto the end of the customer's CPE should be a last resort aren't my words, they're VM's.

Brilliant !. I'm wondering if it's still relevant as far as the discussed power levels,as it seemed to be 2014.
